Weaving a scarf for the alpaca I sheared using its own wool 毛を刈ったアルパカのために、そのアルパカの毛でマフラーを織る

I went to Peru in 2014 to realise the next project in the series ‘Self Sufficient Life’, after ‘Knitting a woollen jumper for the sheep I sheared using its own wool’ in 2012. This time I sheared only the neck of the animal as the most obvious visual difference between alpaca and sheep is neck length. Afterwards I wove a scarf for the alpaca using its own wool. During the project I stayed with indigenous grazing people, in their house located in an area of high altitude – over 4,900 meters. As they lived in an isolated rural area, they have no modern infrastructure – no roads, no cars, no mobile phone signal, no internet, no electricity and no water supply. They have a ‘self-sufficient life’ much the same as their ancestors. In this way I made the scarf.

「毛を刈った羊のために、その羊の羊毛でセーターを編む」の次に、アルパカのためのプロジェクトを実施するためペルーへ旅をした。今回は羊とアルパカの見た目の違いが首の長さであることに着目し、アルパカの首の部分だけを刈った。その後、毛を刈ったアルパカのために、そのアルパカの毛でマフラーを織ったのである。プロジェクトのために、標高4,900メートルの高山地にある土着の放牧民の家にお世話になった。彼らの家は究極の孤立した地に在るため、現代の生活のインフラストラクチャーは何もない。道はないし、車もない、携帯電話の電波や、インターネット、電気も水道もない。しかしながら、彼らには先祖代々変わらぬ「自給自活の生活」があるのである。そこで、自分は「自給自活的な手法」で、マフラーを作ったのである。

Travelling in rural Ireland, we often see many sheep in the fields, but there is an absence of the mills that would have at one time processed the wool. My project involved first shearing the sheep on a farm in Sligo. Then, with help from expert spinners I spun and knitted a woolen jumper for the same sheep I sheared. I then let the sheep wear the jumper made with her own wool. Every process used to make the jumper reflects the traditional techniques of making clothes by hand.

アイルランドの田舎を旅すれば、いたるところにたくさんの羊を見かけるが、羊毛産業はほとんどみかけることがない。このプロジェクトでは、アイルランドの田舎スライゴーにある農場で、ある羊の毛を刈り、専門家の協力のもとその羊毛を紬ぎ、セーターを編み、それを最後に羊毛の提供者である羊に着せたのである。セーターを作る全ての行程は、昔ながらの伝統的な手作業で行われた。
