The prognosis for any venue billed as arthouse-only in Singapore is not encouraging, to say the least.

LEE CHANG-DONG
A prominent novelist, playwright and very briefly - albeit unwilingly - the Minister of Culture, Lee Chang Dong surprised many when he turned to film-making. Despite having no background or education in film, the South Korean has since amassed a series of awards and accolades - courtesy of Cannes and Venice - for his beautiful and moving work on Oasis (2002), Secret Sunshine (2007), and more recently, Poetry (2010).
Born in 1954 in Daegu, South Korea, Lee read Korean Literature at the Kyungpuk National University; where shortly upon graduation, published his first novel titled
Chonri
which clinched Dong-ah Ilbo Literature Award in 1983. Following that, Lee went on to write for two acclaimed films directed by Park Kwang-su:
To the Starry Island
 (1993) and
A Single Spark
(1995). At the urging of his peers, Lee finally took to the director's seat with the moody yet emotionally-charged
Green Fish
(1997) which earned critical praise as well as the Blue Dragon Award for Best Film. Following that,
Peppermint Candy
(2000) further cemented Lee's position as one of the rising directors in Korean cinema.  Prestige aside, a deeper inquiry into Lee's films would yield a thoughtful cinema devoted to realistic study of social and historical problems as they intertwine with the lives of a select few. This is increasingly evident in his later work, especially
Secret Sunshine
 and
Poetry
which present themselves as remarkable canvasses of social critique under his measured storytelling.  Also, Lee's ability to weave several threads of complex thematic issues in a quiet yet compelling portrait of life without teetering on the edge of melodrama is what makes his films so striking from his predecessors- and worthy of the honours bestowed.  While much has been made of Lee as a sort of latter-day Bresson, but for all that his films take up questions of suffering and redemption, they remain rooted in the here-and-now of contemporary Korea.
