Adventures in Librarian-ing
Today one of the Grade 1 classes arrived a little late to library.
They'd been busy trying to see a bear on a wildlife camera (they're learning about hibernation as an adaptation to one's habitat) but with little luck.
Then, in the midst of picking out and checking out books the teacher was like "GRADE ONES! THERE'S A BEAR!" and we all rushed over to look. And what a bear it was! Super chonky and fat, taking a dip in a lake. Truly worthy of Fat Bear Week (even if it's a little bit past it for this year).

I've been doing a lot of thinking about my family and how I was treated as a child, and honestly, my father has never seemed more amazing in my eyes.
I used to love Luigi(Mario's brother) when I was little. Like, he was my favorite character ever, and I had multiple plushies of him. Didn't give a fuck about Mario, vaguely tolerated Peach, but I loved Luigi.
On my first day of kindergarten, my dad gave me the number for his work phone and said it was Luigi's phone number. "If anything happens at school, call Luigi."And not even twenty minutes into my first day, I was having a panic attack. So I went down to the principal's office and called "Luigi."
Now, at the time, my father was in a meeting with his manager and his supervisor, along with most of his coworkers. And when I called, he picked up before he even left the room.
And he put on a very awful Italian accent and said, "Itsa me, Luigi! Whatsa the matter?"In front of his boss and coworkers. Without telling them what was going on. So they were absolutely bewildered, and he carried on like they didn't even exist. He only explained what was happening after I had calmed down and hung up, to which most of them responded with "Aww, cute."
I continued to call him whenever I got upset at school, and eventually his coworkers got in on it. I distinctly remember one of them impersonating Toad. I don't know why I'm telling you this, I just thought it might make you smile :)
this is so delightful I love your Luigi dad

Ooooh, it makes sense now
Just a little PSA for all our mental health (and chronic pain*) spoonies out there! A lot of doctors neglect to mention this little side effect, which means a lot of us are suffering extra from the heat without knowing why.
*Many psych meds are used to treat chronic pain as well, if you didn’t know!

During lunch supervision, the kids get to watch a movie while at their seats.
Yesterday we got to the part of the Lion King where Scar has his big song and I started mouthing along to the words. I then noticed one of the Grade 5s mouthing along too and we both looked at each other and laughed.
"Villain songs are always the best," I said.
"They really are!" they agreed.

I've explicitly said before that I like HP but only consume it through ways that don't monetarily support her, and people STILL told me to go kill myself.
I worry for my elementary-aged students who love Harry Potter and have access to social media.
'Cause, like, most Harry Potter fans are kids. 'Cause it's a children's book series.
For a site full of people who hate Harry potter, you sure like to shout down any effort to stop JKR getting money

Once the friend of a friend of my mom's was visiting Rio and she saw Sugarloaf Mountain and she wanted to impress her taxi driver with her knowledge of Portuguese, so she said in Portuguese "Look, Sugarloaf [Mountain]! It's very big!".
Unfortunately, English native speakers have a hard time making the "ão" sound correctly since the sound doesn't exist in English, so instead of saying "pão de açúcar" (literally, bread of sugar), she said "pau de açúcar." Now, "pau" technically just means "wood," but it's also, unfortunately for her, slang for "penis."
So to the driver what he heard was "Look at the sugar dick! it's so big!" and he almost crashed the car from laughing so hard.

There's an outbreak of whooping cough in Iqaluit and Pond Inlet, Nunavut, according to the territory's chief public health officer. The Department of Health announced the outbreaks in a pair of news releases Saturday. It said anyone can get the respiratory disease — also known as pertussis — but that the most severe cases are in children under the age of one. Though it spreads easily from person to person, the department says it's preventable by getting vaccinated.

I always feel like I'm getting slapped in the face with a wet fish when Americans use Fahrenheit, because I always have a moment where I think it's in Celsius and then my brain catches up.
I'm like "Yeah, I'd be annoyed if I were 10 degrees away from the boiling point of water too."
Or "What do you mean 30 degrees is cold??? Are you one of those bacteria that live by deep-sea thermal vents or something???"
“Hot and bothered” in the sense that it is 90 degrees out and I am extremely annoyed

Alberta's measles outbreaks have now eclipsed the 1,000-case mark and infectious disease specialists are warning the virus is "impossible to contain," given the current level of transmission. The province reported another 24 cases on Friday, including 14 in the north zone, nine in the south and one in the Edmonton zone. This brings the total confirmed cases since the outbreaks began in March to 1,020.
