the thing about the dance is that. the entire pointless horror of it really shines through aegon and viserys. grrm took the pathos of the princes in the tower enigma from the war of the roses and reversed it. the tragedy isn’t that the children died - it’s that they were the only ones who lived. and so the kingdom rearranges itself around boy kings with gaping wounds for souls because that’s what feudal systems do - but what can you do with a targaryen king who cannot stand the sight of a dragon ? the magic is gone. the tragedy must degrade into a farce. and right on cue here comes aegon the fourth!

Rhaenys had to watch her partner. her companion. half of her soul. die in front of her. and then she had to feel herself drop from the sky. knowing that below was her death. that below was her grave. and the only thing that comforted her, was that although she'd finally reached the end of her life, she did so on dragonback. she did so on Meleys.

Meleys died with the knowledge that she didn't do enough. that her rider was doomed. that they just weren't quite quick enough this time around. and the only thing that comforted her before she felt nothing. was the sight of her fearless little rider holding her fading gaze.

honestly my favorite part of season two is the daemon/alys rivers dynamic where she is just like daemon you will die here because this place hates you specifically as do i because i think you are a power-hungry ambitionless deadbeat groomer weirdo. you want to fuck your mom while she tells you you’re her special little guy? mad that your wife is an adult? here’s this cup of blood hallucinogen that’s going to drill even weirder dreams directly through the soft spot in your skull. drink up, loser. the screams in the wind told me you’re a war criminal now as well as a baby killer, so count your days. let me fix that cut on your hand though. and daemon is just so jobless and friendless and divorced that somehow he’s just like okay talk to you tomorrow🫡
