      frank  was  cocky,  even  though  he  didn't  mean  to  be  sometimes.  he  was  right,  he  was  the  only  one  unhinged  enough  to  throw  himself  into  the  wolves  and  come  back  out  scathed  but  alive;  and  his  resilience  was  something  karen  admired  of  him.  her  arms  were  crossed  as  he  called  her  stubborn,  and  then  the  next  phrase  made  her  raise  an  eyebrow  in  shocked  indignation.  “..throw  it  all  away  for  you?  what  the  hell  are  you  implying?”  he  might  be  right,  but  she  wasn't  going  to  go  into  another  relationship  being  the  only  one  that  cared  about  it.  that  happened  once  with  matt,  and  hell  be  damned,  she  wasn't  going  to  do  it  again;  she  didn't  need  someone  falling  for  her  anymore.

“ cmon karen that’s bullshit and you know it . the truth is, you don’t know a goddamn thing . and you’re stuck with me because i’m the only person who can keep you safe from those bastards . “ frank scoffed with amusement , simply annoyed with her stubborn nature but also impressed by the fire in her and the determination to keep going. the fearlessness, it was one helluva feat to witness . “ you are so goddamn stubborn and you would throw it all away for me but i can’t afford another loss on my hands. last thing i want is you getting hit in the crossfire karen, i don’t want that . “

      she  swallowed  a  smirk  because  she  knew  that  if  she  showed  it,  it  would  mean  he  had  won,  but  she  still  had  her  own  thing  to  guess.  karen  thought  for  a  moment;  frank  was  like  a  diary,  his  deep  thoughts  weren't  available  for  everyone,  but  every  once  in  a  while,  he  allowed  her  to  read  him.  it  was  like  maybe  in  another  time,  if  they  had  crossed  paths,  they  would  have  been  a  good  couple.  or  maybe  in  this  one  they  were  still  meant  to  be,  but  she  didn't  want  to  think  about  it,  because  she  knew  it  was  merely  impossible.        ❝i'm  so  going  to  lose.❞  she  said,  a  small  giggle  letting  out  of  her  lips.  ❝i'm  between  two,  frank,  it's  not  fair.❞  she  looks  back  at  him,  her  head  tilted  to  a  side.  “part  of  me  knows  that  you  want  to  walk  away  from  this,  but  i  also  know  you  have  a  great  sense  of  duty,  and  you'll  keep  doing  this  until  it..❞  she  didn't  want  to  think  it,  but  she  knew  it  was  possible.  ❝..kills  you,❞  karen  said  softly,  and  could  feel  the  knot  forming  in  her  throat;  frank  had  become  a  part  of  karen,  as  all  of  the  boys  she  had  loved  before,  her  brother,  her  father,  foggy,  ben,  matt.  but  of  all  of  them,  frank  was  the  one  that  she  yearned  for,  the  one  she  wished  the  life,  the  peace  he  needed.  ❝but  also  the  nightmares..  i  don't  think  you've  stopped  having  them..❞        the  blonde  reached  to  run  a  delicate  finger  against  her  glass  deep  in  thought  for  a  moment,  her  eyes  focused  on  it  instead  of  him.  after  a  moment,  she  finally  said.  ❝..you  have  thought  of  quitting.❞

Frank watched her closely as he listened to her list, his gaze dancing over her soft but strong features. Everything about Karen seemed to pull him in, making him want to protect the woman before him. Though he knew she didn't need his help in that department. There was a gun somewhere on her, he knew that much.

Something flashed over his dark gaze when she mentioned the statement about killing more than one person. It wasn't judgement, it wasn't surprise, but something else closer to recognition.

He was quiet a moment as he thought of the answer. Had she killed more than one person? She was strong enough to, but Karen had morals and a deep humanity that he seemed to be lacking...she wasn't a monster like he had turned into.

"Lavender. You don't hate lavender." He mumbled quietly, voice gruff just as his features were. Calloused fingers were resting on his empty glass like it was grounding him there, though if he was honest with himself, she was the only thing currently grounding him.
