i know i’ve been gone for a minute but holy hell. season 2? all those little kiara and JJ moments, all the twists and turns, the outfits, the humor, JJ’s development further into the hottest human being, THE FINAL SCENE. i finished it at 3am this morning SHOOK.
honestly bravo to EVERYONE involved in this because it was so good. definitely still some weird holes + moments - the gator situation?! but it overall exceeded my expectations and gave me a much needed dose of happiness. 💕

the hair tie || jj x reader
summary: one morning on the HMS Pogue you notice something new on JJ’s wrist and ask him why it’s there.
warnings: a few mentions of abuse
requested: noooooo - but they’re open!
Tumblr media
One day he started wearing a hair tie on his wrist.
You noticed it when you were on the HMS Pogue one October morning. They all decided to watch the sunrise on the boat. John B liked to start fishing early and loved dragging the rest of the pogues along. Pope would bring some kind of study material to read on the boat ride through the marsh. Kie normally put headphones in her ears wanting to drown out Sarah’s tired groans and JJ’s snores. You had a coffee in one hand and were running your fingers through JJ’s hair with the other. The morning air sent a shiver down your spine and was crisp against your face. Most mornings JJ was ready to fish with John B, but his dad had been in a worse mood lately. Which meant a lot of long nights filled with anxiety or walking to the Chateau at 3am.
You moved your hand to play with the hair at the base of his neck. It never failed to put him to sleep and keep him asleep and it was the least you could do. You always wished you could do more. Always wishing you could take away the pain - emotional and physical.
You sipped some of your coffee and looked down at the boy sleeping on your legs. His head was laying over his arms as he sat on the floor of the boat. You couldn’t remember how he ended up in this position as your brain was fuzzy this early. But it allowed for the perfect position to drink your coffee and make sure he stayed asleep as long as possible.
You noticed a small black hair tie wrapped around his wrist just under his sweatshirt. Sure, his hair was long, but never long enough to keep a hair tie around his wrist. Meanwhile, your hair was the longest it had ever been, just past the shoulders, but you always wanted your hair up for one reason or another.
You gently nudged JJ awake so he could catch the beginning of the sunrise. He came to sit next to you and pulled you into his arms. The sky was every different color orange and pink you could think of. It was a sight that never got old.
“J,” your voice quiet, your fingers traced his new black bracelet, “Since when have you used a hair tie?” a chuckle escaped your lips.
A small smile graced his face and he sighed, his grasp around you pulling you a little closer, “Well, do you remember that night at The Wreck a few weeks ago?” he paused for a second, not really needing a response, moreso sitting in the memory that was insignificant to you, but clearly big to him. “You asked Kie and Sarah if they had something you could tie your hair up with and they didn’t have anything.” The memory came back to you. You remembered fussing about how you hated the feeling of your hair down during meals. “You said it was ‘unsanitary’,” he laughed. God, how you loved that smile. “In that moment I wished I could have helped you or been the one to magically pull a hair tie from my pocket.” his eyebrows scrunched together in sadness. “But I couldn’t do that for you."
"J,” He pulled your legs on top of his, running his hand over your shins. “You don’t-”
“I know I can’t give you as much as a Kook could,“ he paused, his eyes glistened with the tears that were forming, "But I don’t want you to ever stop needing me,” he looked directly into your eyes.
You had never seen him in this way before. All at once you felt like you could see the pain of his life come to the surface and the desperation to make sure you never left was clear. He didn’t have to say anything else. You placed your hands on his cheeks and pulled him in for a kiss.
The hair tie. It was something so insignificant that it didn’t even occur to you how big it was to him. He wanted to make sure the next time you were without, he was able to provide. Never in your life had you met someone like JJ. Never would you want to be without JJ.
"And here I thought it was your way of telling me you were shooting for a man bun.” you smiled against his lips which elicited a laugh from him. He held you tighter and placed a kiss on your forehead.
And in that moment, you realized that even for the simplest things, you would always want and need JJ Maybank.

folklore || mad woman
description: she left the outer banks two years ago and now she’s coming back for the summer. they haven’t seen each other since she skipped town without telling him. they’ve both hurt each other, so how do they come back from heartbreak?
warnings: swearing, angst, S L O W B U R N.
series based on songs from the album ‘folklore’ by taylor swift.
author’s note: hiiii two parts in one week?? who am i??!! thank you for all the love on the last post! this one was shorter than i expected, but i’m also not a super long writer so i guess it fits, haha! anyways, this part takes place right before she’s skipped town, so just keep that in mind.
Part One (the 1) | Part Two (this is me trying)
Tumblr media
her.
summer in the outer banks was unlike anything else. everything seemed brighter. the world was more carefree, and while each pogue had a job, the days seemed to last forever.
it was the last summer before everyone was splitting up. everyone had some kind of plan for the end of summer and what they would be doing the next year. you were still a little lost, not really knowing what came next. all you knew was you wanted to spend as much time with JJ, and if that meant holding off on going to college for a year to be with him, then it was what you were going to do. your family insisted it was a bad idea to change plans for a boy, but JJ wasn’t any boy. there had always been a connected between you two. it took you both years to realize it, but when you did, it was unlike anything you had ever experienced.
“yo, Fin,” Kiara threw a towel in your direction, taking your mind away from the blonde haired boy that always seemed to find his way into your mind.
“what?” you shrugged your shoulders. Kiara’s father had given you a job at the wreck the minute you turned 16. he was desperate for help during the busy season, and you were desperate for money for a car. it worked well and you were thankful you didn’t have to work at any of the country clubs and be around kooks more than you already were. it was honestly exhausting to keep up.
“what are you and JJ doing tonight?” Kie smirked, wiped down the table next to yours.
“I didn’t know i was doing anything with JJ tonight.”
“seriously? you’ve slept at the chateau every night for the past four nights.” she stood up straight, pointing at you, “ and i know you’re doing way more than sleeping,”
“hey now,” the topic of your sex life was nothing you wanted to talk about with anyone. you were more private about that part of your relationship, although you were sure JJ was not. “i’ll tell you right now that i did not have sex every night.”
“oh, so only three of the nights.” Kie smirked.
“and one morning,” you both fell into a pit of laughter as Kie made her way to the back of the restaurant to clock both of you out for the day.
you threw your bag over your shoulder, your stomach turning not knowing what to expect from the dinner JJ had planned for you. uncertainty never made you nervous before, but from the sound of his voice on your phone call earlier in the day, there was something different.
JJ.
he fucked up and he knew it. he also knew this dinner wasn’t going to make up for the news he was going to tell her, but he could only hope.
he wiped his palms on his shorts before he packed away the last of their dinner into his backpack. he knew she loved the simplicity of eating meals on the dock over the ocean. if he was going to break this kind of news to her, he wanted it to be in a calming place. but he knew that no matter how many ways he tried to make the situation better, he would still be breaking the worst possible news and it wouldn’t end well.
she knocked on the door of the chateau, “JJ?” her voice echoed through the empty house and he could hear her footsteps as she made her way to the kitchen. he felt as if his heart was in his feet.
she turned the corner as his gaze met her figure. she was wearing a green polka dot skirt that stopped just before her knees, with a worn in white t-shirt and white sneakers. her hair was curled and her makeup was minimal. “god, you’re gorgeous.” he wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed her forehead. he breathed in the smell of her shampoo and he could feel his breath tremble thinking about the many terrible ways this night could go. and expecting them all.
“a picnic?” her voice piped in. he turned to look at the backpack, one hand staying steady on her hip.
“all of you,” he said, kissing her temple. he was scared that he was going to lose her. out of all the girls he had been around in his lifetime, she was the one he wanted to keep. she wasn’t a typical beautiful. the outer banks was filled with girls who just cared too much. about what they looked like, who they hung out with, what their life looked like on their social media. but she was so different. over the years, she had grown into her own. her body was unlike the other girls with it’s curves and marks, but she had learned to love it. the shy girl he once knew, had turned into a woman who stood her ground in social situations, but knew when she needed to take some time a part from others. they just fit together. moreso, when they came back together after their one (and only) breakup two months ago.
spending the last months of their senior year a part was good for both of them. they had grown up together and she never wanted to be dependent on a man, and she had become like that with JJ. while he knew they both craved more during this time, it felt like the right thing to do before they graduated and transitioned into adulthood. but there was one night of it that he regretted more than he could have ever thought.
they had both agreed to see other people if they wanted. but neither really had any interest in anyone and knew that their break was most likely only temporary. she decided to focus on school and spending time with the pogues. JJ didn’t have an interest in any other girls than her. except the one night he mixed a little too much alcohol and a little too much weed together.
her.
the dock was your favorite place. growing up in the outer banks, your life was filled with the ocean and everything that came along with it. the water had always been your happy place, most of your days were spent there.
you both finished the dinner JJ prepared, but for some reason your stomach was continuing to turn. you two had spent plenty of nights together eating on the dock so you knew it wasn’t from that. but you couldn’t shake the feeling as the night drug on, that this wasn’t a normal date.
“you know i love you, right?” JJ spoke quietly after you both had come down from a fit of laughter. you never got tired of hearing those words come out of his mouth.
you nodded and grabbed his hands across the small picnic table, “of course i do. i love-”
his words cut straight through your own, “Inez is pregnant.”
in three simple words, it felt like everything was being take from you. the entire future you thought you had with JJ was ripped apart. you loosened your grip on his hands, and slowly brought them back into your lap. unsure of what to say, unsure of what your next move needed to be.
it was like something washed over your body in an instant that brought a certain warmness through you. was it sadness? was it anger? maybe even rage? it all didn’t seem real. JJ’s lips were moving, but his voice was coming in and out, the blood was rushing to your head. you could hear snippets of his voice, “mine, i think...it was one night...i was really faded...Fin?”
you thought flames would come out of your mouth if you spoke, holding back all the things you wanted to say. you grabbed your bag and started walking down the dock. not sure where to go or what to do. all you knew was that JJ Maybank had unleashed something inside you that you didn’t know you had: madness.

Part One (the 1) | Part Three (mad woman)
Tumblr media
her.
growing up, your favorite story was Peter Pan.
the boy from Neverland stole your heart quickly and you dreamt of a place where you would never have to get old. the adults in your life always seemed stiff and unlikeable. they complained about being invited and not being invited to parties. it seemed like they were confused about what they wanted.
being raised in figure eight meant too many fancy parties with stuffy adults and pretentious kids. through most of high school, you would show up at the beginning, but sneak out half way through to spend the night surfing with JJ. he had always been your escape from the uptight life that your parents made you live. they had dreams for you to go to college or marry into money, maybe both if it worked out for them. but that wasn’t what you had wanted.
college wasn’t your scene, you couldn’t imagine spending another four years learning about places and cultures, instead of actually experiencing them. you quickly wrote college off your list when you picked up a camera for the first time. at first, you was mediocre, at best, but eventually people were paying you hundreds of dollars to shoot their weddings in your first year. your senior year of high school, you created a name for yourself and through the power of social media, you was noticed by a multi-million dollar wedding company who offered you the internship of your dreams.
your parents didn’t approve of the offer, but at eighteen, you knew you wanted this and they couldn’t stop you. you packed up your entire life into her little Subaru and left.
this internship was the gateway out of the outer banks, away from kook life, away from the heartbreak, towards a new life. a fresh start.
he would have asked you to stay, but it wasn’t that easy. JJ brought a love you had never known into your life, but he also brought a heartbreak you had never felt before.
you had an hour left in your drive and as your stomach turned, you had to remind yourself that it was your choice to come back for the summer. JJ was a part of the package deal of returning. you pulled over to the side of the winding country road. in one swift motion the car door opened and you found yourself hurling out onto the dirt road.
“I’m trying, I’m trying, I’m trying,” tears were streaming down your face as the anxiety washed over your body. there was a certain desperation in your voice that scared you. knowing that if you were near the side of the road, maybe your car would get just a little too close and you’d go tumbling down, never having to deal with what was to come.
“fuck,” you slammed the door shut, breathing in through your nose and out your mouth, watching your breathing and gripping the steering wheel like it was a lifeline. as your breathing slowed, you shifted gears and the wheels of your car found the road again.
the love you had for him was still there and it scared you more than anything in your life. and here you were, driving straight into the storm that was JJ Maybank.
JJ.
JJ felt like he was floating as he rushed around the chateau, to clean up the mess his friends made the previous night. so many things have changed, he thought, three years ago, there’s no way in hell I’d be doing this. which was true. when she left, his entire mindset shifted. she was the one person he thought he would have forever, and with the rest of his friends out of the outer banks during the school year, he had to grow up.
john b left him the chateau during the school year. free rent in order to keep up the house? sold. he made the house his home. completely renovating the little shack on the water. it was the first time in his life he was fully responsible for something big, and he wasn’t going to fuck it up. so he kept to himself, fixed up the chateau, praying every day that it would pay off. praying that she would come back to him.
he knocked on john b’s door.
“come on, man,” he yelled, “you gotta get up and clean, she’s going to be here in like an hour.”
he could hear both john b and sarah groan and shuffle around the room. sarah opened the door, rubbing her eyes and yawning. “J, you need to chill out.” she said, making her way to the kitchen.
john b was still in bed, his mouth hanging open, trying desperately to succumb to sleep again, “dude,” JJ threw a shirt at his face, “get up.”
“why does everything have to be perfect, JJ?” his voice hissed and was raspy from the early morning wakening, “it’s not like you guys left on the greatest terms, so what does it matter?”
JJ shut the door muttering a “fuck you” as he walked to the kitchen and threw the beer cans into the garbage which made an audible clang. sarah jumped as she closed the cabinet door. “JJ, chill,” she poured herself a cup of coffee as he paced around the house.
“sarah, if your asshole of a boyfriend does anythin-”
“he’s not going to do anything, JJ” she leaned against the countertop, her face almost buried in her morning coffee, “he loves Fin as much as the rest of us. she left on a high note with us, but on a bad one with you, so i get why you’re freaking out.” she paused, thinking of the best words to say, “but you can’t let her see that. she doesn’t need to have that power over you. you’ll talk it through with her this summer. i’ll make sure of it.” she touched his shoulder as she made her way back to the bedroom.
he collapsed onto the chair in the living room. closing his eyes and placing his head in his hands. “i’m trying. i’m trying so hard.”
she was coming back. this was what he had been waiting for since she left two years ago. he wanted more than anything to prove that he had changed and wasn’t the same boy she left.
her.
you wiped your hands on the side of your shorts as you pulled into the driveway of the chateau. you could feel tears pricking in the back of your eyes, and blinked in hopes of pushing them down. you put your car in park and turned off the engine. “it’s now or never, get out of the damn car.” you whispered to yourself through your teeth.
the front door of the shack opened and john b was the first to emerge the little house. you stepped out of the car just in time for him to wrap his arms around your waist and lift you off the ground. it always shocked you every time he was able to take your feet off the ground. in no way were you as physically small as sarah and kie, your curves were prominent and there were times you couldn’t shop at the same store as the other two girls, but john b always made you feel just as beautiful. he smelt of a mixture sea salt and tea tree shampoo. it felt like home.
“i missed you, Finny,” he smiled against your neck, it felt right that john b was the first one to hug you. he was the one who had been there for you the longest, and even though you didn’t want to admit it (because he was a real dumbass sometimes) his friendship meant the most to you.
“i missed you, too, JB,” you said, as he broke the hug to kiss your cheek.
sarah let out an audible squeak as she wrapped her arms around your neck. “it’s been too long!”  you both rocked back and forth. until sarah let go, knowing you had a lot of people to hug.
pope and kie were next, it only seemed fitting that they both went in for a hug at the same time, forming a little circle. when pope left the hug, you grabbed kie to hold a little longer, whispering, “where is JJ?” kie could feel your hands shake slightly, clearly nervous to see the blonde boy.
you could feel her playing with the hair on your back, “i’m not sure, Fin. he’s around here somewhere. i think he’s just as nervous as you, if not more,” she placed her arms on your shoulders, separating the hug. “he loves you a lot,” she whispered for only you to hear.
“well, he had a pretty terrible way of showing it,” you sniffed, feeling tears streaming down your face. the entire scene was so overwhelming.
you had missed the sound of the waves crashing against the shore and watching the HMS pogue sway with the waves. you missed the salty air and the humidity that summer brought. you missed the sight of the chateau, while more fixed up now, just a little shack on the beach. you had missed this little family of yours.
“so,” john b clapped his hands together. “dinner?” everyone agreed in unison knowing the pizza that was awaiting them inside. kie and sarah wrapped their arms around your shoulders as everyone walked up the steps of the chateau.
it felt like a little piece of your heart was getting put back together. your friends were more of your family than your actual family ever had been. you breathed a small sigh of relief knowing the one person who you didn’t want to see wasn’t inside. whether you liked it or not, he would be around the next three months.
stepping inside you could see the amount of work that had been put into the home since you had last left. there were new coats of paint, new pieces of furniture, and there was a wall of pictures hanging up of the six friends in the different seasons of their lives. even the photos you had sent of your adventures in colorado were up there. you felt your stomach drop with the thought that your friends never actually forgot about you. instead, they were always supporting you from afar. tears pricked at your eyes. it was like coming home.
your eye caught a particular picture. it opened up an old wound you had spent so many years pushing down. it was you and JJ the summer before you left at the beach. his sandy blond hair pooling over your face as he looked down at you. it was a particularly warm day and instead of spending the day on the hms pogue, the gang had ventured out to the actual beach. it was one of your favorite days with JJ. you remember it being a day of snow cones and sandy butt cheeks and hitting a volleyball around the beach. it was like everyone agreed to fill an entire day with all of the summer adventures. it was a dream. until it wasn’t.
JJ.
he stood in the driveway of the chateau two hours after she arrived.
while the outer banks always had an ungodly amount of humidity, his hands were sweating more than usual. he chewed his bottom lip, unsure of where to go or what to do next. did he wait for her to come out? should he just walk through the door? it was technically his home and she was just visiting. no, it was definitely her home once too.
he ran his fingers through his hair, he knew he needed to see her. it had been two years since he had spoken to his best friend. but she was within walking distance. he could yell her name like all those nights after she left, but this time, she would hear him. he could run to her and wrap his arms around her waist and feel her warmth, her curves, her beauty and never let go. he could hear her laugh and listen to the stories of the adventures she’s been on, see the pictures she had taken. he wanted nothing more than to kiss her lips, and feel her love again.
the outer banks wasn’t big. so the entire town had known what he had done when she left. it was clear that she was running from him, but he didn’t blame her for any of it. if he was in her situation, he would run too.
he started to walk to the door, his legs felt like jelly, but it had been some time since she got there and he hoped she would be distracted by the others that he could just slip inside and listen to her talk from his bedroom.
the first thing he saw was her walk down the stairs, she was barefoot and her skin a golden brown. her t-shirt came down past past her hips and he was unsure if she was wearing any shorts underneath. it was by far his favorite thing she wore when they were dating. her hair had grew and was now far past her shoulders and cascaded down the front of her chest.
as his eyes came up, he locked eyes with the girl he loved since he was ten. and then his entire body went cold.

Part Two (this is me trying) | Part Three (mad woman)
Tumblr media
JJ.
he knew she was on her way back to the outer banks.
it had been two years since he saw her face. he hadn't heard her voice in 24 months. 730 days. 17,520 hours. 1,051,200 minutes. it was the longest he had gone without speaking to her since they were ten.
now, at the age of 20, he was feeling a hole in his heart that he had never felt before. there were so many moments of wanting to call her, drop everything and go to her.
he knew that photography was her dream and that she couldn’t have turned down the offer to travel the country with a popular wedding photographer, but that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt any less when she left.
she left without a word to him, instead telling the other pogues the day before she skipped town. in so many ways, his world came crashing down in front of him. but he knew he didn’t deserve a goodbye. he hurt her in the same way, if not more.
her.
the car ride to the outer banks was a long one. after finishing her last wedding of the spring, she decided to take the summer off after working every day for almost two years. she missed her family and the friends who became her family.
she kept in touch with the people closest to her, sarah, john b, pope and kiara. they were the ones who encouraged her to chase her dreams, but not to forget where she had come from. they were the reason she was making the 15 hour drive back to her hometown. spending the summer back in the place she grew up would be both wonderful and terrifying all at the same time.
she missed her friends more than anything, but terrifying because for the first time in all of her 19 years, her life was going impeccably well. she said yes to an opportunity that allowed her to live outside of the outer banks and chase a dream that she had had since she was little. her entire life had been filled with “no’s” and playing it safe, but for the first time her life was fulfilling.
but the outer banks was home. she missed the salty smell of the beach and the heat of the north carolina coast. she missed the chateau and drinking with the pogues into the morning. she missed the simplicity that came with living on a little island and was ready to spend a summer living a quieter life.
she felt a pit in the bottom of her stomach, thinking about the one reason she almost didn't come back. jj maybank.
jj.
he was sitting at the edge of the dock, his feet dangling into the cool water. a chill ran down his spine, from the temperature and at the thought of seeing her tomorrow. what was he going to say? should he say anything at all? everyone was home from college for the summer and would be at the chateau waiting for her. they would spent the day on the water, just like old times. except this was nothing like the old times.
everything had changed. college was just the beginning of the end. he could feel it in his bones. it seemed like sarah and john b were on a fast track for marriage. with all the impulsive things they had done in the past, jj was sure they would “accidentally” end up in a courthouse someday or john b would propose with a fucking ring pop out of spontaneity.
kie and pope had an "on and off" relationship, almost every week. most of their friends couldn't keep up. kie would spend a few months traveling, then visit pope for a few months, long distance took it's toll on them, but they were making it work.
so he was the only one left. the only one waking up alone. the only one that stuck around in the obx. he wanted so desperately to get out for good, to leave and never come back. but what was he going to do? it's not like he was set up for success. there was always one road block after another preventing him from leaving. so he just stayed, worked his ass off to bring the chateau back to life and fix up the place that he now called home. hoping that one day it would all pay off. wondering each day if one thing had been different, would everything be different?
her.
she had just crossed the border into north carolina when her phone lit up.
can't wait to see you tomorrow, Fin!
of course, sarah would be the one to text her first. a smile grew across her face reading the nickname her friends had given her in middle school. it's what most people in her life had now called her, and it just stuck. she honestly couldn't remember where it came from, but it felt good to be a part of something familiar again.
she had been pretty nervous about seeing her friends, knowing that she had dropped the move on them suddenly, unexpectedly. it definitely wasn't fair to them but she needed out of the outer banks. it was hard to live there. reliving the pain that made her want to leave in the first place. seeing jj everyday dug the dagger in her heart a little deeper.
they were good together. like really good. the most shaping points of their lives were spent together. she remembered the night they spent together the summer before their sophomore year of high school.
the pogues had left for a party at the boneyard, but she decided to stay back at the chateau because of a headache. jj stayed with her in order to avoid the possibility of seeing the touron he had just had a one night stand with.
they set up camp in the living room, jj beat her three times at mario kart and she beat him the last round. he offered her a blunt and she said no, too nervous that the volleyball team would do a random drug test before school started. instead she spent the night letting the vodka burn down her throat as jj filled the room with smoke.
they had been going on four years of friendship and she was by far the closest to him. if jj was there, so was she. most days, they seemed like a package deal. each of the pogues had begun to notice and questioned them almost daily.
two hours into their night, she wasn't sure if it was the buzz she had from the alcohol or the way that jj was intently staring at her as she drank, but the words escaped her mouth without any second guess. "have you ever thought about us?" all jj did was nod. soon enough, their mouths collided in a mess of weed and alcohol and their bodies felt as if they melted together. and that was the beginning.
from that night on, they were inseparable for almost three years. spending days on the hms pogue, drinking too late, eating at the wreck, visiting the drive in theater, riding jj's bike around the island. those three years were the best of her life. he pulled her walls down, gave her a reason to keep moving forward. they dreamed of traveling the world together, getting out of the outer banks for good. she thought he was the one. the one who would be her person for life. the one she would grow old with. the one she would create a life with.
that's not something you can throw away overnight. but he did.

yes, pls hype me up. 💞
i’ve been uninspired and nervous to write a series but this album brought it all out.
I’m about to work on a series based on ‘folklore’ and I’ve never been so excited.
Stay tuned, babes.
