I can absolutely see why the whole Zombie schtick is annoying to a lot of people (which is fair), but beneath that the core reason why Shawn acts the way he does is deeprooted anxiety and fear, which I think is compelling! He's selfish, but in a way that's unique-- we've seen people be selfish because they think they're better than everyone else on TD before. That's a common trait in TD contestants. Shawn is shortsightedly selfish because he's scared, and so much of his conflict with others is just him afraid to form any kind of connection with others on the basis that it could be used to hurt him later. His whole vibe screams of someone who's been left to his own devices in isolation for far too long and just doesn't consider others as much as he should, and his arc is learning that the whole point of surviving is because you have other people to love and protect. The life he seemed to have in mind before in the name of "surviving" feels deprived and empty in contrast.

I think in any PI rewrite Shawn should stay an anxious mess even if you pump the breaks on the Zombie obsession, because that's the real meat of his character. Zombies are just a convenient vessel for it.

Alright so, Cameron and Lightning barely interact until the last few episodes, but when they do finally establish a character dynamic it's A Doozy.

Because we know by this point that Cameron's grown enough of a spine to fight back against the injustice he faces; his sabotage and backhanded vote against Jo show that, despite him learning how to be "friends/friendly" with everyone now that he's no longer in his bubble, he's smart enough to know when he's being played AND how to get his own back. And Jo's just as intimidating, if not more so, than Lightning.

And yet. When Cameron inadvertently steals a win from Lightning, and Lightning in turn dedicates himself to "crushing him like a grape", Cameron doesn't try to subtly fight back like he did with Jo. Why does he suddenly loose all of his strategic sense and the steel in his spine when it comes to Lighting?

It's because he's super gay and wants Lightning to crush him like a grape.

And, Lightning himself! He barely interacts with the other contestants throughout the whole series, at least not until he and Jo have their weird rivalry-friendship going on, and suddenly he's near enough centred his Whole Mind around Cameron, or at the very least taking Cameron out (on a date), because he was 'outplayed' by a scrawny nerd one (1) time. We know that he's competitive, and we know that he's a sore loser, but Lightning's been shown multiple times through the series to be... very simple. He doesn't have the brain power to hold a grudge for longer than one episode. AND YET.

He's so focused on being Cameron's downfall that he literally obsesses over him for canonical days, going so far to build a Cameron body pillow pillow punching bag that he eventually seasons and eats, just to intimidate the real Cam. (Also I totally thought for a split second that Lightning was gonna make out with the pillow a lé 'Alejandro and The Pineapple' style.)

He's so focused on personally beating Cameron that he forgoes having Zoey, the objectively better competitor, as his opponent for the finale simply because he wants his victory over Cameron to be more personal. It isn't enough for him to just vote Cameron out, he wants to pummel that nerd into paste.

And then, in the finale itself, Lightning literally ignores all of the obstacles around them; he only has eyes for Cameron, nothing else matters to him.

That's really gay.

In conclusion; Cam fell first and Lightning fell harder.
