In 2008, faced with the possibility of financial failure, Iceland had to think on its feet. Instead of bailing out banks USA-style, the country forgave mortgage debt for the population – and completely started over from square one.
Instead of allowing the people responsible for bank fraud to run free as the years passed by, Iceland thought it might be wise to actually indict bankers who committed serious financial crimes that contributed to the collapse. By paying off loans for consumers, forgiving homeowner debt (up to 110% of the property value), and throwing the offenders in prison, Iceland was able to bounce back. Now, its economy is “recovered” and is growing at a faster rate than both the US and European economies.

Valentines day was spent with my second girlfriend, mother nature. After waking up to a beautiful morning with the sun shining strong, Mike, Max and myself decided to hike up a nearby trail to a small town. We set off at 2 each with a backpack full of german beer. The trek was hard at the start but once the path leveled off we got a view of some amazing sights like this one. You could tell that spring is just around the corner, birds were chirping, flowers were beginning to sprout, there was an all around air of comfort. Once we got to the town we sat down at a very traditional german restaurant. There were couples all around us, after a few beers they were giving us dirty looks as we joked and laughed loudly. I had a plate of brautwurst and sauerkraut with some mustard. When we were done we went to the nearby brewery to pick up some more beers. As the sun was beginning to set and the wind blew a little harder we had to decided if we would be taking the bus back home or trekking there. After a moment of consideration we decided to flip a coin. The coin told us to start walking. At first it was an uphill battle and we were reconsidering our choice. However when we got to that even part of the path and we caught our breaths, the beers were out and we had a nice easy walk back home. By the time we arrived it was nighttime and we all had a sense of accomplishment and a day well spent.

The Sagrada Familia. A breathtaking feat of architecture, geometry, and a truly unique vision. The whole time I was waiting in line I just kept thinking about how big it was, then when I stepped inside I was truly in awe. Nothing could prepare me for how high the walls rose and the intricate detail. Inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, this place maintained a natural aura of beauty in every room.

Barcelona was an experience. Unlike any other city I've ever been in. Alive like New York while retaining the quaintness of a town in Tuscany. By that I mean that each new step was a discovery. I felt that I could aimlessly wander those streets for hours on end and never see the same thing twice. The people were lively and intelligent, amid the blaring club music I could over hear some people discussing Catalonian independence. Being that I can trace familial roots to this beautiful Mediterranean peninsula I also felt a personal connection to the land, people, and culture. I felt very comfortable and it wasn't just because I knew the language. My only regret is not spending more time here.
