just psychologically speaking "thanks, by the way" might genuinely be the best way mike could've possibly started that conversation in will's room. expressing gratitude as a way to begin a difficult and emotional conversation wherein you're going to vulnerably address distance in the relationship? that is probably the most effective way to set the tone for the conversation that i can think of. and it is infinitely more mature than "so, are we just not going to talk about it?" to the point it's hard to believe they were said by the same guy like twelve hours apart
