2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV revealed, Australian potential unclear

GM's reborn electric Hummer ute gains an SUV sibling, with similar neck-snapping power, chunky styling and abundant off-road capabilities.

The long-roof brother to the resurrected, all-electric Hummer pick-up, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV, has been unveiled.

The design of the GMC Hummer SUV, which differs only by an extended roofline covering a traditional cargo space, will be familiar to readers who have seen the aforementioned GMC Hummer EV truck, which was revealed in October 2020.

The SUV keeps the pick-H-shaped up's taillights and boxy dimensions, but adds a full-size spare wheel with the same 18- or 22-inch alloy specification and 35-inch Goodyear all-terrain tyre as the quartet lining the vehicle's arches.

GMC hasn't revealed how much cargo space is hidden behind the rear tailgate, but the lack of a third row of seats – the SUV, like the related pickup, is a five-seater – should allow for plenty of room for adventure and off-road gear.

The Hummer EV SUV features an upright front end with LED lighting and 'HUMMER' script, a bold lower front skid plate, and flared box-style wheel arches, all of which are carried over from its tray-backed sibling.

The SUV's 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, chunky switchgear, and three-spoke steering wheel with an upper LED strip used to facilitate General Motors' Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, which provides hands-free support for over 320,000km of North American freeways, are all shared with its sibling.

A power-operated falling rear window and a row of auxiliary buttons configurable to a variety of off-road functions are also available, as is the pick-glass up's Infinity Roof with removable panels.

The GMC Hummer EV SUV is powered by a trio of electric drivetrains, all of which are based on GM's Ultium battery architecture and are shared with the SUV's four-door forerunner – though the pick-flagship up's 746kW, 563km-plus option isn't available with the longer-roof body style.

All models are equipped with 22-inch wheels, four-wheel steering, CrabWalk (which rotates the front and rear wheels in the same direction for off-road maneuverability), and Extract Mode as normal, with the exception of the entry-level EV2 (or, officially, only '2'). (which ups the ride height by 152mm to clear obstacles).

The Extreme Off-Road Package adds 18-inch wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Territory MT tyres, underbody armour, rock sliders, an electronically-locking front differential, 'virtual' locking rear differential, heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts, UltraVision (comprising 17 camera views around and under the vehicle), and more to the same models for US$5000 (AU$6500).

The US$105,595 (AU$138,500) Edition 1 will be released in early 2023, combining three electric motors with a high-capacity 20-module lithium-ion battery to produce 619kW and 15,592Nm – though it's worth noting that the latter is almost certainly a wheel torque figure, with torque at the motor likely around 1350Nm.

The 0-60mph (97km/h) sprint takes 3.5 seconds, and the maximum range is "over" 483km (300 miles) in'standard' configuration, or over 451km with the off-road pack. An 800-volt electrical architecture is standard, and DC fast charging at up to 300kW is available.

Moonshot Green matte exterior paint and a Lunar Shadow interior color scheme are included in the Exclusive Edition 1.

In the northern spring of 2023, a US$99,995 (AU$131,000) EV3X model with the same powertrain as the 'base' Edition 1 will go on sale in the US.

Other notable features include a 3218mm wheelbase that allows for "best-in-class off-road dimensions" and "impressive departure and breakover angles," a 10.8-metre turning radius with four-wheel steering, a "Watts to Freedom" launch control mode and torque vectoring on EV3X and Edition 1 models, and nearly 200 off-road accessories available from launch.

The list of available drive modes is highlighted by a MyMode profile, and there's also support for a myGMC smartphone app with Energy Assist.

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV will be available in the United States as a Model Year 2024 vehicle in early 2023, nearly a year and a half after the similar EV pickup, which debuted in the northern autumn of 2021.

According to GMC, more information about the model will be published in the next 24 hours.

In terms of an Australian launch, the reborn Hummer SUV is unlikely to arrive anytime soon, given that local arm General Motors Specialty Vehicles has yet to announce plans for the SUV's pick-up sibling to arrive in the country.

However, neither model has been expressly ruled out for Australian use, implying that there's a possibility (albeit a small one) that GM's flagship electric behemoths will one day govern local highways.
