did we ever ask u what coven youd be in btw? ofc the coven system is bad and all that, but apart from all that?
Actually, (this is a tangent) I don't think Belos created the magic groups. He definitely structured them, made them rigid and mandatory, sure. But based on the little kid creating an abomination back in the "Wild Ages" (see Elsewhere and Elsewhen) the covens as schools/groups of magic did exist before him.
Plus, based on the ancient Looking Glass Graveyard devoted to illusionists, there were people that chose to focus on a specific group of magic.
My guess as to how they came about is that certain powerful witches would develop spells of their own, and then teach those spells to apprentices. Over the years as the spells are passed down, people invent new, similar spells, and the magic group grows.
Have you noticed that the covens don't seem based on any inherent magical property? There are plenty of spells like levitation or elemental spells that don't fit any of the covens.
Instead, the covens are based on functionality!
Abominations to fight or do manual labor for you, construction to build houses or repair objects, beastkeeping to care for livestock, etc. You could imagine guilds or schools of magic forming to teach people trades, and the spells useful for those trades!
The most important part though, is that before Belos, it would've all been optional. You could learn any spells you wanted to! Be a jack of all trades, or just focus on one thing! Heck, you could make a whole new magic type of your own!
Anyways to answer your question illusions all the way. Visual tricks, power boosting, memory magic, awesome titles, there is nothing she can't do. Fuck the coven system I'd be a wild witch and still an illusionist. Thought being able to manipulate just one of your senses was scary? Wait till I start getting creative with other spells >:3
#bas you know my thoughts on this already but yeah there's absolutely no way belos invented covens#humans have been banding together for shared benefit and knowledge since time immemorial#witches would have been the same#and there's in-show proof of this#everything about the looking glass graveyard suggests a past form of organised practice#there's a designated meeting space built from a lasting material#memorials to celebrated illusionists#a tradition of protecting chosen artifacts#even what looks to be an early coven sigil on the keeper's clothes!#and the coven system has only been in place for fifty-odd years if memory serves#there are witches that remember life before mandatory coven membership#the graveyard has *very clearly* been there a lot longer than that.#my point is that belos exploited an extremely natural and common way of societal formation#to divide and weaken the population of the boiling isles into easily-controlled groups he could manipulate without question#and single out a common enemy—the ''uncivilised and barbaric'' wild witches—to give the illusion of unity.

im firmly in the "hes hallucinating" camp wrt the caleb & grimwalkers ghosts from s3e2 but assuming theyre actual ghosts i think we should talk about the fact that the grimwalkers and caleb all get to hang out togedduh. think about that okay. they get to hang out in the BONE PIT and be friends. do you think.... do you think caleb thinks of them as his children. that would be nice since he never got to meet his actual child did he. since the ghosts live in the BONE PIT. so hes got all these kids now. all these funnyboy kids who each had a horrible life but now they get to hang out and haunt philip together. in the BONE PIT

not sure! this AU is pretty fast and loose with what is and isn't canon. more of a running joke than an AU tbh. it's a nice idea that the ghosts are watching over Hunter though, not sure if they can really interact but it's a sweet thought.
