A dry forest toad [Incilius coccifer; formerly Bufo coccifer] sporting an unfortunately well-fed tick on it’s neck. These toads can be found in southern Mexico and southeast Central America. Toads will eat ticks if given the chance, but ticks as just as happy to feed on amphibians. And for those wondering, no, you cannot drown a tick. Images by Anita E. Shaul.

I am THRILLED by some facts I have finally learned. Look at this helpless, goofy creature. The way it moves is adorable. It is very very bad at it. Does this look like something capable of tunneling through flesh?? This is a scabies or “mange” mite and all I heard all my life is that they “burrow” into skin, but I’d always wonder how this animal does such a thing. It’s a fat blob with little soft feet and a teeny, tiny mouth. You hear that something burrows in flesh and you imagine something pretty sleek and bladed and sinister, not a chubby sweet potato!!!
Somehow the details of the process managed to elude me my entire life, maybe the whole question just slipping out of my mind before I’d look any further into it, but today I finally found a scientific paper with this beautiful juicy explanation:
“Mites placed on the skin secrete a clear fluid (presumably saliva) that forms a pool around their body. It appears that the stratum corneum is dissolved (lysed) and the mite sinks into a depression in the skin. As it sinks, legs I and II seem to move in a tortoise like fashion (digging, crawling/swimming motion). The action of the legs propels the mite forward as a tunnel-burrow in the stratum corneum is formed.”
Who would ever JUST call that “burrowing” and call it a day!? They don’t burrow into skin they MELT into skin!!! They melt skin and they waddle their way through the melting with their dumb little wiggle legs ““like a tortoise!”“ That’s so whimsical! It’s also terrible but that makes it even more whimsical! Horrible, sleepy potatoes just leak acid and dissolve into your body! It isn’t even the burrow per se that causes itching and pain, people can get actual wounds that don’t feel as shitty as a mange mite; the reason it feels like torture is your immune system freaking out around it, especially as the mite keeps laying eggs and pooping in there. The little potato monsters melts into your skin and lives in there and eats the skin soup but also poops in it. Nature made that! There are several species so nature thought she should make that more than once. I think she hates you but at least she’s funny!

COOL MAGGOT FACTS:
1) Under normal conditions, fly maggots are always what eliminates most of an animal carcass on land. The recognized stages of decomposition are dependent on their presence.
2) Many humans find everything about a maggot abhorrent, but it wouldn’t be such an efficient scavenger if it differed in any way. They are pure utility, stripped down to the bare minimal anatomy for scavenging!
3) Blowfly maggots can technically be considered “aquatic,” as they will spend most of their life submerged head-down in the fluids of decaying meat. Like water-dwelling insects, they breathe by “snorkeling” through pores near their anus!
4) Maggots have a pair of tusk-like hooks to help get a grip on rotting tissues, but no means of biting or chewing. Like adult flies, they secrete a digestive enzyme and suck up the liquefied food.
5) Maggots actually greatly reduce bacterial levels around them, as they are competing with the microbes for food.
6) Most insects still have six true legs even as larvae, sometimes just greatly reduced. Not so for fly maggots, who lack even an internal trace of appendages.
7) Not only do they lack jaws or limbs, but fly maggots are among the only insect larvae without “head cases.” Other insect larvae have fully developed heads and jaws, protected by a skull-like exoskeleton similar to the head of an adult insect. Except for its hooks or barbs, a maggot is squishy and naked from end to end!
8) Maggots function like organic drills. Cone shaped, with the mouth at the small end, their undulations work them corkscrew-like into meat.
I’ve posted this photo before and I’ll probably post it again. It was the first time I ever got to see what a maggot’s face actually LOOKS like, and I fell in love instantly. I mean, I already liked maggots, but that was before I knew they were hot-dog walrus puppet monsters in parkas. That’s also a bacterium hanging out in the upper middle - the entire maggot head that we’re seeing here is barely visible to the naked eye.

I’ve posted before about how elephant lice have their own little trunks like some straight-up cartoon logic but I was still not aware those trunks were actually flexible and wiggly until today!
It is because they live on a mammal with one of the world’s thickest skins and you have to respect a parasite willing to put up with bullshit like this for a single meal:

Letanía de mis defectos
Soy vanidosa, déspota, blasfema;
soberbia, altiva, ingrata, desdeñosa;
Yo misma he construido mi anatema.
Soy perversa, malvada, vengativa.
Es prestada mi sangre y fugitiva.
Mis pensamientos son muy taciturnos.
Mis sueños de pecado son nocturnos.
Soy histérica, loca, desquiciada;
pero a la eternidad ya sentenciada.

Llovimos tanto que me ahogué
Hablamos tanto de la lluvia
que un trueno acabó atravesándome la garganta
y tuve que escapar.
Tu vida o tu corazón, me dijo alguien,
congelados,
solo esperaban verte aparecer.
Y entonces un día me dejé vencer,
olvidé dónde buscarte,
comencé a despegar
si no te olvido a ti
y tú no venías a curármelo,
y volverte tinta,
que pudimos
y aunque no fuimos
siempre seremos
—ojalá entiendas eso—,
que nos hicimos el amor
una noche que llovimos
y por eso te llevaré conmigo
siempre.
dulce y lento
un día de invierno
llenas de frío por fuera
y de amor por dentro.
Y que ojalá sonrías
y no te culpes
ni te castigues:
tú cambias vidas,
pero no destinos.

Quise ser hombre
Una vez quise ser hombre
para casarme con mi
hermana
que ya lleva tres divorcios.
Para amar a mis amigas
que en cada relación
mueren un poco.
Quise ser hombre
para fecundar sus vientres,
no de hijos, sino de poesía,
vino tinto, relojes parados,
unicornios azules.
Para decirle a Josefina
cuanto admiro su forma de
entregarse.
Para escribirle a Rosi
esas cartas que no llegan
nunca.
Llamar por teléfono a Pilar
que espera tantas tardes.
Llenar de caricias
prolongadas
el espacio de Beatriz,
que vive sola
y le tiene miedo a los
temblores.
Quise ser hombre,
para amarlas a todas y no
sentir más
el frío de sus lágrimas en
mi playera,
ni mirarlas apagarse,
ni presenciar sus funerales
en sus ataúdes de treinta
años.
Quise ser hombre
para invitarlas a volar el
periférico,
a bailar descalzas porque
el América
le ganó al Guadalajara,
para llevarlas del brazo
hasta una cama
donde no tengan que fingir
orgasmos.
Pero soy mujer y, aunque
puedo
compartir con ellas la
poesía,
escribirles cartas,
llamarlas por teléfono,
llenarlas de caricias
prolongadas,
volar el periférico,
bailar descalzas,
secar su llanto,
tocar su alma…
No es suficiente.
No les alcanza.
Porque, desde niñas,
aprendieron
aman.
