Thinking about how davesprite (presumably) didn't go through the same character growth as Dave on the three year journey, so when they meet up again he's still stuck in his pre-game mental state of thinking Bro is cool and also totally not gay definitely, and then he meets Dave who is. Not that
Basically:

Karkat is not quadromantic
Okay, so I don’t actually care that much about shipping, but as a result of Dave/Karkat being a hot button issue lately, I ended up doing some thinking and I think I accidentally stumbled across the “point” of DaveKat happening so late in the story, at least on karkat’s side. Basically, it’s the culmination of certain parts of Karkat’s character arc–at least on the romantic side of things. (Plus it probably ties into Blood in some way because of “bonds” or whatever, but I won’t get into that now.)
TL;DR version: Karkat’s arc is partially about coming to terms with being “queer” in the context of troll society, in the sense that he does not actually experience traditional quadrant-based attraction.
1) The story is being cagey about what quadrant Dave and Karkat are in, with characters speculating on what quadrant they’re in on multiple occasions, and this is completely intentional. It’s not to troll the reader; it’s because they’re actually NOT in any one quadrant. Which is ultimately what many real-life relationships look like, because emotions and relationships are multifaceted.
2) This is foreshadowed by the whole “their love went beyond the four quadrants, transcending the grid entirely” thing with the Sufferer and his Disciple.
3) In troll society, the quadrants are basically like heterosexuality. It’s a social construct that’s considered the “normal” way to experience romantic/sexual attraction, and the quadrant system actively gets reinforced by society because it’s tied directly to reproduction… ie, drones with quadrant-specific buckets.
4) Karkat’s conversation with himself reveals that his relationship difficulties have been specifically caused by him having a hard time staying in any one quadrant, and he actively struggles with convincing even himself that he experiences “normal” romantic attraction.
FCG: YOU’VE BEEN SENDING [Terezi] AN ENDLESS STREAM OF MIXED SIGNALS FOR AS LONG AS YOU’VE KNOWN HER.
CCG: OH BULLSHIT.
FCG: LIKE FUCK IT’S BULLSHIT.
FCG: IT’S ALL TOO CLEAR TO ME NOW. IT’S A CLASSIC CASE OF QUADRANT VACILLATION, AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW IT.
FCG: NO WONDER SHE WAS FRUSTRATED AND GOT FED UP WITH YOU.
CCG: THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.
FCG: IS IT?? TELL ME, HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU TREATED HER IN A WAY THAT COULD BE OBJECTIVELY CONSTRUED AS A FORM OF BLACK SOLICITATION?
CCG: THAT’S JUST
CCG: NO, THAT’S HOW WE’VE ALWAYS ROLLED TOGETHER. IT’S LIKE
CCG: SPIRITED PLATONIC CONTENTION.
CCG: TOTALLY NORMAL TERRITORY IN A HEALTHY MATESPRITSHIP.
FCG: YEAH, A *HEALTHY* ONE, NOT ONE INVOLVING A DEMENTED LOUDMOUTH WHO CAN’T KEEP HIS SHIT UNDER CONTROL.
FCG: LET ME ASK YOU, HOW MUCH OF THAT ANIMOSITY IS INNOCENT “PLATONIC RAGE”?
FCG: COULD IT BE THAT SUBCONSCIOUSLY YOU WANT TO PUSH THINGS WITH HER ONTO CALIGINOUS TURF, MAYBE SEE HOW THINGS WORK OUT THERE?
FCG: SEE IF YOU CAN HAVE YOUR GRUB, AND CULL IT TOO??
FCG: THAT WAY YOU HAVE HER ALL TO YOURSELF!
CCG: FUCK YOU.
5) Karkat suggests that troll society already has a concept of people who try to fill every quadrant with one person… but they’re demonized for it, a “sad joke character”.
FCG: YOU WANT HER IN EVERY QUADRANT LIKE A DESPERATE FOOL.
FCG: DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU’VE BECOME? YOU ARE THE SAD JOKE CHARACTER IN THE ROMCOM, YOU KNOW THE GUY I’M TALKING ABOUT.
FCG: WHO’S GREEDY AND INDISCRIMINATE ABOUT FILLING EVERY QUADRANT, TOTALLY OBLIVIOUS TO IT, AND IN THE END HAS FUCKALL TO SHOW FOR IT.
This parallels how human society (traditionally) demonizes people whose sexuality does not align with heterosexual reproduction, and how for decades any non-heterosexual characters were basically treated like “sad joke characters”.
6) This is why Karkat gets so embarrassed when talking about relationship stuff around Dave and John on the lilypad, despite having no qualms with talking about more traditional modes of romance: he is still not comfortable with “coming out” as not being all that into quadrants. In that sense, Karkat spending the whole comic putting EXTRA emphasis on the importance of quadrants is pretty similar to Dave spending the whole comic putting EXTRA emphasis on gay jokes and his ironic cool guy facade.
7) Dave and Karkat are literally perfect for each other, because their relationship arcs parallel each other. Karkat needed an alien to help him get over his complex about fitting neatly into troll society’s ideals about quadrants… Dave needed an alien to help him get over his complex about fitting human society’s ideals about masculinity.
Damn this crazy comic for actually making me care about something like gay teenage aliens dating.
