The inscription combines a command to enjoy wine, luxury, and sex with a memento mori — a trope common in Greek and Latin poetry. It is a popular variation of the Epicurean philosophical stance. One must seize the day (carpe diem), take life’s pleasures when they offer themselves, for soon both pleasures and life will be gone. Since this is a small object meant for one person’s use and contemplation, might the “leopard” be his bedroom alias? Or a nickname his beloved liked to use? Considering the ways that the artist transgressed cultural constructions of male-to-male lovemaking that appear in the texts of the late Hellenistic period (and for that matter, in Rome of the late Republic), it seems clear that his patron custom-ordered this gem. The representation, particularly considered with the inscription, emphasizes both tenderness in the couple’s mutual gaze and — quite exceptionally — the sexual pleasure of the penetrated male.”

while i think from an academic perspective that the theory that ovid was never exiled and wrote his exile poetry as a literary exercise is really dumb, i have to admit that it's the funniest possible theory about his exile. like imagine picking up a copy of this heartfelt book of poetry where a man begs repeatedly to be allowed back to his home and his family and then two days later you see him at octavius's tavern giving a dramatic reading of a poem he wrote about his dick
