the years in which minerva mcgonagall had james, sirius, peter, and remus as students were the only years she had a seating assignment for her classroom

under no conditions were james and sirius to sit anywhere near each other, it was opposite ends of the classroom for them

nor were remus and sirius to sit together as remus wasn’t nearly as sly as he thought he was in antagonizing sirius into trouble

peter really couldn’t be near james, either, because he’d always end up doing something disruptive in an attempt to make james laugh

so james sat at the far left front table, and sirius at the far right, with remus and peter spread out in the middle

and save from some note passing and giggling, she never really had much of a problem with lily

until midway through fifth year, when she’d ended up next to remus

and their table turned into pig in the middle of the lesson and ran off, leaving remus and lily breathless with laughter

(while minerva wanted to take points from them, she was a bit too impressed, and gave them detention instead.)

so remus and lily were not to sit together, either

then, in their sixth year, there came a day where the only open seat left was next to james and lily made a spectacle out of moving her chair as far from his as possible

amused with the effort she’d gone through to not sit next to him, it wasn’t long before james had arranged for the same situation to happen again 

sirius and peter kept her busy before class, making her late, while james made sure no one else sat next to him

that day was full of harsh, hushed whispers as lily tried to get james to ‘just please, please, shut up!’

the next time it happened the whispers weren’t so hushed

before the end of class the next time, james had turned lily’s inkpot into a marshmellow and she’d turned his book into a bag of milk 

after that, lily and james were no longer allowed next to each other

but a battle had begun, and sitting across the room from each other wasn’t about to stop it 

one day lily reached into her bag for her book and pulled out a handful of pudding instead

the next day james went to run his hand through his hair, as he did 839 times a day, and found his hand stuck in with a sticking charm

it continued until they’d lost so many points from their house that their fellow house mates intervened, stopping them before they could pull off anymore pranks

and that’s why, even well into their seventh year, even well into their relationship, lily and james were never allowed to sit next to each other in transfiguration
