i have yet to talk about hot-rod's full backstory but i want him, after the gang war, to go visit his awful dad for the first time in years to see if they can't get on better terms w each other. he only visits because his dad needed him for something or other but he resolved to do so before he got the call. i imagine he talks about his dad with a couple of the rival gang members in the phase before the gang war, and so that having been used as a point of manipulation by thresher, it's on his mind so he decides he wants to try to mend his relationship with his dad.
another part of it is, he sees hornet being tough, serious, and handy like him, but also outgoing and kind and overall happier, and he sort of wishes he could be like that. he wonders if maybe his bad upbringing had something to do with his generally grumpy and depressed attitude, and that maybe if he could get on good terms with his dad, and possibly even find his mom who left the family when he was little and reconnect with her, it might make his heart grow a size or two. though when he discusses this with hornet she says she likes him as he is. so like. does he change? idk yet. but i think he should try
