whatever that wayward feline creature was, veritas was not in a habit to take in unidentified strays.
however, he could also differentiate between petulant stubbornness and plain loneliness. that creature's actions affirmed his hypothesis, and while he did watch, and did narrow his eyes at the way it pawed at his desk, briefly, he seemed to ease up slightly once more distance to his precious documents was created.
if, and that stipulation was set in stone, it would refrain from bothering him during work, he may allow for a tacit spectator. ❛ one peep and i shall grab you by the scruff and remove you from the premises myself, ❜ he warned, and afterward returned his attention back to the papers before him.
Considering she had been largely ignored until she had touched something, Sora had already gotten it in her head that obviously that was the only problem here. She could look, just not touch. A little annoying, but she'd get over it.
More importantly the man had spoken up-- and it sounded a lot like he was talking to her rather than at her. Curious... had he figured out she wasn't a normal house cat? She tilted her head to the side as she looked up at him, and as his words sunk in her ears drooped.
He wants me to leave already? Lowering her gaze, she scuffed her paws lightly on the desk. Did she really have to go? What if she just kept her paws to herself? And then, as if to prove she could, she shuffled over to the edge of the desk and sat down, wrapping her tail over her paws and finally sitting still.
There! Now I'm not in the way!

he was a strict but benevolent teacher, and most he came across became his students, be it willingly or not. he meant well, in the end, even if it was seldom noticed; what doctor spent his years merely chasing after the gratitude of his patients, however, and what scholar lived for the recognition of those benefiting from his teachings ?
❛ speak concisely, ❜ he requested, rather than reprimanded; he knew she was perfectly capable of fluent, steady speech, after all, and one should stand by their choices, even if they were made out of ignorance. unwitting, unknowing and uneducated— removing any of these flaws would surely benefit anyone.
a quiet sigh followed, before he produced a slip of paper from his pocket, along with a pen. swiftly, the doctor scribbled down a few words, and passed it over to sora. ❛ these are books on popular flora and fauna in this corner of the cosmos. the first two come with pictures, you may find them more helpful. ❜
Now that was a tone of voice she hadn't heard in a long time. And even though the man had been snappy before now, somehow it didn't compare to.. this. Her ears drooped and even her tail lowered-- in mere seconds her look changed from unbothered to suddenly contrite.
"I-- that's not--" How was he doing this? She almost wanted to apologize for eating the fruit. "I-it's not like I just go around eating whatever I can get my hands on!" She protested. "I just-- I try things, that's all!" She sighed, finally setting the rest of her fruit aside. Somehow he'd actually managed to shame her out of finishing it.
"In this case I.. I didn't have anything else to eat." And she was fine, wasn't she? No poison had done her any lasting harm thus far! Something entirely thanks to her unique biology! But he didn't know about that, didn't know anything about her, besides what he could observe.

that attitude of his was, if a myriad of fellow scholars and students alike were to be believed, meant to get him in trouble one of these days. however, veritas found that a solid display of physical exertion, when push came to shove, solved the majority of escalated issues. he had never been shy when it came to dealing with disruptive individuals, and was certainly not going to be any more demure in any other aspect of his life, either. in that regard, he had come to appreciate the assassin's personality; he did not waste either of their time with senseless questions or chatter meant only to fill silence, did not impose himself and indulged his curiosity in healthy measures. ❛ it serves to perform a wide variety of readings, from the mundane barometric pressure and general atmospheric composition to a number of detailed measures. ❜
frozen in place, is he even breathing ? assassin doesn't even know why he's listening. well, it's veritas. he's intelligent, he's kind. he doesn't raise any red flags. hasn't, even when he hears the murmurs of his supposed attitude. and sure, wuxi has experienced it before, too. but, it never felt like it was meant in such a terrible way. then again, maybe he's blinded, impartial. he is often under the scrutiny of others. they talk about him too much. he wishes they'd keep his name out of their mouths. it's at this point that moze wonders if veritas has ever felt the same. praise, criticism. does it get tiring ? when he's told that he can resume his movement, he doesn't. feet stay planted in that same spot. yet, there's curiosity blooming in violet orbs as he stares at the gadget in hand. " .. what is it for ? "

the conversation had rapidly become headache-inducing. as so often, the scholar was left inwardly lamenting the choice to offer up advice. while not impolite or overly unpleasant in a generalised sense, the woman was positively drenched in ignorance.
shrugging off concerns, dismissing further knowledge, an insouciant attitude towards her own health— any consultation seemed wasted labour.
❛ taxing as the act of not stuffing colourful, foreign vegetation into your mouth indubitably is for you, you would be best off affording your survival a mere fragment of due effort. ❜
Mith.. what? That was a word Sora had never heard before, but she could at least guess what he was getting at. She knew some poisons could build up in a person over time and become lethal, but that shouldn't be a problem in her case. It wasn't like he knew this, though, so she didn't blame him for getting snappy.
"Ah.. look, I'm fine. I'll be fine. I've eaten all kinds of poisonous stuff over the years and it hasn't hurt me yet!" She paused.
"Uh.. actually, I guess that's not entirely true. I've definitely gotten some stomach aches. Oh, and there was this one time my tongue went numb for a few hours... uhm.. I guess I've passed out a few times too-- b-but I always wake up again feeling okay so.. no big deal, right?"

while arts held their own scientific value, it was the precise overlap that fascinated veritas most. philosophy did not only concern itself with the very foundation of all matters but also the amalgam of beauty and rationality. knowledge was woven into every string composing existence, through aesthetic and reason alike, rendering none capable of rightly indulging in ignorance so long as they draw breath, for being without understanding would bring ruin to the notion of a fulfilled life. with that in mind, he was more than willing assist, although he doubted the light of kshahrewar truly had any need for a second pair of eyes. the materials were accepted, still, and the binder flipped open to be skimmed through. ❛ i will have this checked by tomorrow, then. you may pick it up here again by noon. ❜
Debates between colleagues were important and essential for growth. Kaveh could not claim to be the best at something he did and allow himself to stagnate, especially in a field that was as evolving as architecture. Math and engineering were consistent, but style was forever changing. ❛ I was hoping you could have a look at the numbers. I'm feeling a little apprehensive, and in this line of work, it's important to have doubts checked. ❜ He said and handed the binder and sketchbook over to Ratio. ❛ I was also hoping you could look at the style a bit. You enjoy sculptures, and the client is — obsessed with them. ❜

@spurhill : It was a shame to say that Boothill had been a little distracted with work lately, coming home late or sometimes not at all. But he'd been good, always sending a text or two for his sweetheart to know he was alive and well.
Thus, it must have been a surprise to Ratio when he attended his lecture to see one Galaxy Ranger sitting at the back, a little worse for wear but presentable. His hair was tied in a messy bun and he seemed tired, yet he refused to doze, fighting heroically to stay awake regardless of how his head drooped and his eyes unfocused during the class. The mere sound of his lover's voice bringing him a peace and calm he'd not had since their last night together.
At the clamoring of students rising from their seats and the renewed chatter signaling the end of class, Boothill's head shot up. Dang. He'd napped no doubt, and his 'classmates' apparently found it funny to mess with him. Hat shifted sideways, hair come lose. Well, whatever. He too rises from his seat and meanders his way up front, making no effort to hide his affections when he wraps himself around one Dr. Ratio and nuzzles against his cheek.
"I'm home.. couldn't wait t'see ya. Lets go watch some dumb movies t'gether. I wanna hear ya pick 'em apart."
needless to say, ratio noticed him right away.
not only was he generally observant and tended to memorise as much of his surroundings as possible, he also knew which spots the ranger favoured in his classroom, and sometimes, when he felt particularly wistful, glanced longingly along the seats in hopes of spotting him.
he found that tied-back hair to be a good look for him, generally, and while his students may have taken to messing with his dear, he permitted the such only in gentle retaliation for his presence in the first place.
the class emptied out eventually, with the lecture concluded, and ratio made sure to close and lock the door after the very last student had departed, fully aware that boothill would invade his space, and that he had a mind to indulge him. when metallic arms wrapped around him, he found them strangely warm, albeit by virtue of plain fondness more than anything else.
a soft sigh was exhaled, but the affectionate greeting did soften him up a little, and he was inclined to agree to a certain impatience to spend time together. fingers settled against his hands for a moment before he shifted, making sure to adjust so that he could wrap his arms loosely around his dear's neck, keeping him close, and stealing a swift kiss from his lips.
❛ welcome home, ❜ he mused, head canting lightly. ❛ i'll indulge you, if your notes of today's lecture are up to par. ❜

frankly, ratio's behaviour should be entirely predictable to the gambler. after all, he seemed to have a frustrating knack for estimating his actions— if only he would use it to spare him some time arguing back and forth every so often.
❛ if you wish for my company, then you must comply with my demands, ❜ he reiterated, brows rising for emphasis; any other kinds of negotiation would likely be plainly dismissed. ❛ you should be familiar with the concept of terms and conditions, no ? ❜
He resists the urge to sigh, a little tired and defeated, finding himself strangely endeared about the scholar's stubbornness this time around. He should have predicted this response from a man often hardly dissuaded by his attempts to distract.
"Wound? It's just a scratch—a couple of scratches, to be precise." They weren't necessarily big, but they were bleeding and quite abundant in number. He wouldn't pass the doctor check if he allowed it. "Are you doubting my capabilities for applying first aid, doctor?"

unacceptable.
his attention remains on the bandage, with a small, subtle amount of distaste in his expression. it clears once he meets the gambler's gaze, and that haughty air of his makes a return instead. ❛ under one condition, ❜ he says, chin lifting slightly. ❛ you will let me treat that wound of yours. ❜

...He squirms. He really would like to redirect his attention elsewhere, if he can help it.
"Accident." He says absentmindedly, without thinking much of making it make sense. He is fairly sleep-deprived today. "Nothing serious, though. Hey, since you're around... How about accompanying me for a couple drinks today after work? Just a night out, nothing too formal."

@spurhill : Much to Ratio's delight, certainly, Boothill scoops him up into his arms, hugging him tightly before returning him to his feet.
"Dear Heart, I got a big ol' surprise fer ya. Been workin' on it fer quite a time hopin' t'get it done 'fore ya notice. But it's worth it, I promise, yer gonna love it. Bet you'll even gimme 10 points."
needless to say, ratio was not particularly inclined to expect any pleasant surprises from the cowboy. it was less a matter of doubting his sincere efforts and more one of knowing that their interests did not much align, and boothill did not grasp most of what fascinated the scholar.
while he held on to his shoulders once picked up, there was an undeniable amount of trust in the way he neither stiffened nor wiggled in his grasp, even if he offered a soft, defiant huff once he was returned to the ground.
❛ a surprise, ❜ he repeated, admittedly quietly dreading what may await him. ❛ a bold assumption. know that i would prefer not to clutter the apartment more than necessary, it's already proving a challenge to store all those trinkets without giving in to some minor chaos. ❜

@kushtibokt : There is an overwhelming feeling of want nagging him, strong enough to prompt this sudden approach, though he knows this time not to indulge in his impulsive need to touch—it is bad enough that what he wants is already plenty bold, so even without his unwanted contact, he couldn't guarantee yet to have the scholar agree to indulge him.
So he can only stare, even though his hand is itching to grasp his fingers and drag the other towards him, with him, away from all. He directs his focus to his eyes, instead. Warm, beautiful, just like the whole man.
"Doc." He begins, and then pauses for a moment as he digs between excuses for a justification. Nothing feels suitable, that he could tell the other would accept without getting suspicious or upset.
His gaze ultimately turns away in defeat, as if dodging the embarrassment of pushing himself to admit, at last. "—I want your attention today. It doesn't matter whether you just hang out with me, or lecture me, or teach me something, anything. I just want your focus on me entirely."
With another pause, he blinks, and peeks over his face before adding. "If you're not busy today, of course. I'm done with my workload." It had left him strangely empty and wanting.
almost every encounter with the stoneheart had left the scholar feeling empty and wanting. exchanges of little value were vexing enough, but aventurine had a tendency of offering glimpses, mere sparks of what ratio wished to submerse himself in entirely.
their shared kisses and touches never seemed enough, their conversations intriguing, if often frustrating, but never touching on the topics he truly wished to discuss. being with him seemed a downright impossibility, albeit not for a lack of desire; the gambler was guarded fiercely by what the doctor rightly assumed to be past suffering. knowing parts and deducing others left him aware that he had endured much, and he understood that it likely did not ease the strain showing any vulnerability might bring.
still he seemed brazen, seemed to boldly request, to want, when ratio felt, more and more, as though he was tolerating behaviour that only truly had the power to leave him dissatisfied, irritated and regretful.
he didn't even seem to address him by name, what hope was there that their encounters would ever truly bear any more fulfilling qualities than fleeting pleasure ?
ratio held his gaze, a soft prickle beneath his skin lingering, defying his unwillingness to eternally entertain the executive's whims, and those brilliant eyes of his only seemed to assist in that endeavour. that averted gaze of his saw him lift a brow, a temptation to uncover the reason for what seemed to be sheepishness flaring briefly. it was promptly snuffed out with his request.
eyes narrowed lightly, his expression promptly became considerably more displeased. it seemed obvious that his request was not fuelled by hubris but rather by simple want; seldom did aventurine seem so hesitant to state his desires. still, to that day he had not been given any reason to believe that there was lingering meaning behind his affections, that they would ever be anything but non-committal.
it did not help that hearing him say he wanted his attention solely on himself did tug ever so gently on his heartstrings.
❛ why, exactly, should i heed that request of yours ? ❜ he questioned, head canting lightly. while spending time with him did sound pleasant, a mere demand like that was, admittedly, quite out of line. ❛ unfortunately for you, i am not at your beck and call to be toyed with. ❜
