Stede's love confession is still just....SO! He's respectful, he's sincere, he's plain but eloquent. He means every word. "I love being near you"—he's calling back to the early part of their relationship, because of course they haven't been near each other for months. He's saying, already, that he was always in love with Ed.

It's sweet and earnest and painfully romantic. It also highlights how they can choose to be different. They've been watching this conflict between Anne and Mary the entire night and it is perfectly possible that they can go down that route, sniping at each other, stabbing and hitting at each other out of boredom or spite. But Stede soothes things; he lets Ed speak his hurt, he speaks his own, he shows that he can be trusted. He never denies Ed's feelings or tells him he's wrong, but he also doesn't just let Ed run over him. They both start to establish the terms on which they can move forward, and how they want to do it together.

This post (which was written in 2022, before the second season) drove home to me how important it is that Stede consistently disavows the caricatures of Ed ("they might as well have given him horns" "they made him look like a ghoul"), repeats over and over that "he's a good guy", acknowledges Ed's failings but continuously humanizes him even when he's not present. It is Stede explicitly recognizing Ed's humanity, set against the insistence not just of the British but of everyone that Ed is a monster.

Ed is out there, screaming in despair "I'm the kraken, I'm a monster, I'm the devil", and Stede is telling everyone he meets that Ed is the most wonderful man he knows.

And Stede is right.
