I’ve seen some of your posts and mutuals have mentioned your analysis multiple times and I wonder, do you have a breakdown or take on Axis as a character? Just wanna see
"Aww, Axis! The dumb little robot that has nothing else going for him except how goofy and dumb he is, haha!" <- What basically everyone in the game thinks about him 🙄
I admit that I'm not the biggest Axis fan. He's not a bad character or anything, it's just that usually my thoughts revolve around other characters when I do think about Undertale Yellow. But, I do have a pretty spicy take on him: The Pacifist Ending was the worst ending for his character out of all the endings in the game.
Axis already has a lot going against him. His memories of the Integrity incident were taken away. He was discarded by his creator*. He was locked up in a cramped locker in the Steamworks along with his earlier models. He only comes to life again after who knows how long he was trapped in that locker. He was likely intended to be forgotten like the rest of his model line/the Steamworks as a whole (the Steamworks were cordoned off, sealed behind a thick and heavy door that requires a passcode that only the employees (who have been fired by this point!!!! The Steamworks are out of operation!!!) would know to enter. He exists under some horrendous circumstances. And yet despite the odds, he persists. He's the only one of his kind to survive, he's unique among the Steamworks robots for several reasons (not connected to the hive mind, can experience love and remorse and is more complex than the rest of the robots, gives EXP upon death), and unlike the rest of the robots in the Steamworks, he's able to properly perform his intended purpose (albeit very goofily and haphazardly).
And when Ceroba and Clover meet him, first impressions just tell us that he is a dumb robot. Ceroba doesn't have a reason to think of him as anything beyond Chujin's creation. Clover doesn't either. And at the end of the Steamworks, after everything that Axis and Clover and Ceroba have been through with all the chasing and apprehension attempts and general goofiness and the final fight, this is the last chance that Axis has to leave an impression, hammer something in besides all the goofy slapstick that every scene with him presents. Aaaaaaaaaaaand we get "Silly Axis falls in love with a pile of garbage, hallucinates that it can speak to him, then gets into a relationship with it," which is just... :/.
On the route that is most tied to the theme of justice (like the Vengeance Route) and also how there's depth to people (unlike the Vengeance Route, where everyone is your enemy and you must kill them), the lack of exploration of his character feels tonally dissonant. Axis's happy ending is mashing his face against a pile of garbage in a rotting and abandoned factory. Ceroba and Clover have no reason to think about him/his circumstances further and recognize him as a person. Ceroba doesn't even tell Axis that Chujin, his creator that he clearly loves, died. It's just. Frustrating.
And look, I get it. The Steamworks section is about learning about Ceroba's backstory and circumstances, setting things up for the final confrontation against her. You don't wanna detract from that with too much focus on Axis and character development for him. But there could've been room for Ceroba to recognize Axis's personhood/individuality. See him as something beyond an extension of Chujin's own work. Then have a moment of realization that, Oh. She's been looking at Clover in a similar way, seeing them as a means to creating Chujin's serum/an extension of Chujin's will and creation instead of seeing them as a person (yes, I am aware that Ceroba recognizes Clover's personhood at this point, I'm spitballing here). Could've been a great way to tie them together and push her to think. But instead, there's... nothing.
The No Mercy Route has Axis exhibiting great courage, defying his programming to apprehend humans to run away, yet also warning the other robots to stay away from the human on the warpath. He confronts and tries to convince Clover to stop fighting because they're at a standstill and Clover won't make forward progress in the fight with their gun so just give up + because Axis didn't mean to kill Integrity and he's sorry that he did, please forgive him and stop your rampage. He may have died but he died expressing his personhood there. And the Neutral Route has his whole speech about how he has the freedom to be flawed and exist as himself even in a world that forgot about him. He talks about how he likes being alive, even as he is. Another moment of individuality there. But in the Pacifist Route, the route where everyone is supposed to get the best possible ending for themself, the best possible ending for Axis looks like him.................. having seven minutes in heaven with a garbage pile.
Anywho, here's a screenshot from a discussion I had over discord with friends about this, because I had some rambly thoughts about it.
I once saw a take on here that said that the Neutral ending for Axis and the Pacifist ending for Axis should've been swapped and I agree with it 100%. Besides being a better ending for Axis's character, Flowey being so flippant with Axis's individuality suits him (and makes Ceroba look pretty bad/unsympathetic as well, because she never comes around to see him as the person he is). Axis finding a sense of purpose/admitting to enjoying his life, "I am a person too even though I am a robot who doesn't look like you/doesn't have the freedoms that humans and monsters do," feels like it belongs in the Pacifist Route. Maybe complete with him rebuilding a part of the Steamworks along with the other forgotten robots in the epilogue. But we don't get anything like that. And it's a glaring flaw of Undertale Yellow.

*Yes, Axis says that Chujin was always nice to him and I have no doubt in my mind that Chujin did treat Axis nicely. But Chujin still took away Axis's memories, which is a violation of his personhood. Traumatic as a memory may be, a person still has rights to it. And Axis was stored in a locker in an abandoned facility. There's no mention of him in Chujin's last words to "save him" or anything so he was likely left there to be forgotten/discarded, like he didn't matter. Yes, Chujin was nice to Axis but he likely didn't see him as anything beyond his creation. You don't feel bad about destroying or throwing away a bad looking drawing or cooking or a sculpture you made, why would you feel so differently about discarding a robot that you see as "just a robot?"
(And, this is speculation/headcanon that I wanted to throw out but I couldn't figure out where to put it, but considering how the Axis we know is Model 014 yet the one that got Chujin fired was Model 08, and the sheer amount of robot parts in the Ketsukane mansion, and how Chujin was able to access Axis to send him after Integrity, and how Kanako seems familiar with Axis (judging by her drawing in her room), Chujin likely kept making Axis Models at home in secret after he was fired. And then made Axis Model 014, sent him after Integrity, and once Chujin saw the carnage that he caused, scrapped the entire Axis idea, wiped Axis's memories and donated him/any other functional models that he had to the Steamworks as a way to cover his tracks. That's my take on Axis's history.)
