Masking fluid / drawing gum
Yo!
I posted some peel porn of the masking fluid on my instagram stories and I got so many questions about it that I decided to write a little review and tutorial on using this bad boi.
So, here's the stitch on pebeo masking fluid. Its a liquid rubber coating applied with a paint brush to put over parts of the painting that you dont want to get colored. Here is an example and steps on using it for coloring a background.
Things needed:
A brush that you're not going to miss if it gets messed up
Water just for the masking fluid brush
The masking fluid, this here's pebeo drawing gum
Soap of some sort - im using b&j brush cleaner
Watercolor paper, and paint, and brushes, and water
So, wet the brush and get it soapy and then just wipe it with a cloth to get the shape of the brush but don't rinse out the soap. Dip the brush into the masking fluid and lay it over the areas you won't want colored, then let it dry. Once dry you can then water color your heart out. Once your ready you can gently peel off the masking fluid and continue coloring the painting. Bam, amazingness.
This here's an example sketch, a helpful reminder to warm up before trying to do more serious projects, it's very important and something I often overlook :/ the purple is the watercolor layer and the blue is the masking fluid.

Notes:
Don't shake the masking fluid or else it will make bubbles that get annoying when laying it down. So far I havent seen any seperation so there hasnt been a need to shake it. There is a little lift off when peeling so if you sketch lightly make sure it wont completely disappear, also it might not be the best for laying ontop of an already painted area, also I noticed there is lift off of paper too if its used over a surface multiple times or if the surface was wet when applying. I like to use a little plastic tipped brush to gently peel off the masking fluid, so gentle that it feels like I'm not making contact with the paper, just the thin layer of masking fluid. The more gentle you go the less likely you'll get paper lift off or smudge the line work. I like this stuff because it dries blue so its easy to see where it is, most other ones either dry clear or white.

Instagram archives has the peel and painting part I couldn’t post because of the one video limit on tumblr <3

Hey Internet!
How are you? Happy New Year! My new year is starting with a slow and steady pace with organised passion projects and plans for the future. Which is a pretty rad way to start out.
I finished my third skate skate deck finalizing this rad little collection.

I have been feeling pretty glum lately and thought what would be cool is to add in some feel good words with my weird characters. I love how the colors turned out and the character that is brought out from the decks themselves.
I had these decks donated from a friend and they were very much used when given. They're cracked and scratched up and I loved looking at them and seeing where all the wear and tear happened during their lives. It's cool to think about the life it had and how the person must have learned a new trick, or did some super crazy bail out and the times of scratched knees and all around good feelings, or sometimes bad, riding around on these things. Or maybe they just weren't the best feel and they switched up to a different deck. All in all they are now living a new life all painted up and fancy.
I remember the feeling of skating around and hitting a single tiny pebble stopping the board and sending me flying. How such a tiny thing can mess up the whole ride hahahaha! I also remember bombing down a highway onramp and not knowing to serpentine down, so I was just flying STRAIGHT down this onramp and not knowing how to stop. I look behind me and there's a semi truck hurtling itself toward me and I freaked out and the skateboard started to speed wobble and I simply had to send myself flying off to the side of the road and enjoy the super crash. I laughed the whole scary time and it was so, so funny.
