My favorite thing about fanfic authors is they can identify any gap in a canon timeline where characters are offscreen and exploit the ever living fuck out of it

They see a time skip of any length and go

reading book 6 & 7 is like reading your first fanfic without realising it

in book 4 hermione made S.P.E.W. badges and even got Harry to buy one. but in book 7 does Harry find one of those in the bottom of his trunk? nope! it's not the badge made by one of his best friends in the whole world that he seems to have saved. it's one of Draco's badges. absolutely iconic. fics are literally subtler.
