SUBLIME CINEMA #299 - THE LONG GOODBYE
Altman’s the Long Goodbye boils classic film noir tropes and Altmanizes them into an interesting, hilarious take on the genre. It’s notable for an amazing screenplay by Leigh Brackett, the unsung hero writer of classic Hollywood. After writing the Big Sleep with William Faulkner, she went onto be contracted by Howard Hawks for a series of his films including Rio Bravo, then scripted the Long Goodbye for Altman and her final film (which she didn’t see before she passed away) was the Empire Strikes Back - a fitting end, given that she began her career writing short stories for Astounding Science Fiction pulp mags.
Her resume as a screenwriter is one of the best in history, though always overshadowed by male collaborators or contemporaries (Faulkner, Hawkes, Altman and Raymond Chandler, and Kasdan and Lucas for Star Wars). But everything she wrote was gold, it’s worth seeking out films she penned because of it.
