i never thought I'd send you an ask but I've seen your posts on the conclave tag and I have a question (for the conclave 2024 fic I'm writing) that I'm sure you'll know the answer to.

afaik once the new pope gets elected he gets asked if he accepts, and then gets asked his name. then he goes to the room of tears to change. and I know there are two things that should happen afterwards but I want to know which one happens first, and perhaps you can correct me if I'm wrong (which is likely)

I know the new pope goes out on the balcony to give his first address/speech to the masses, and also I know all the cardinals have to um, swear to them? swear their lealty or something? I don't know what exactly they swear, but I know they being in a throne—i think all of this happens also in the sistine— and he sits down and the cardinals kneel and kiss his ring (???) and swear like yeah that they accept him as pope essentially. as you can see I am not too clear in all of this. could you explain it to me? and does it happen before or after he goes out to the balcony?

(also I think that I read somewhere they Francisco refused to sit in the throne and instead stood/sat in a normal chair when he did that?)

Okay so I had to do a bit of research for this one because I hadn't read about it but I love a good bit of research for fanfic (I do not have the Regency era order of precedence bookmarked for nothing)

I am raised as an atheist myself so my knowledge is either through living in a catholic country or good old plain research.

Here is the answer:

This is done after for sure! They do the smoke, then he accepts or not and chooses a name (although they may wait for white smoke until he accepts, order unclear to me) then he goes to Room of Tears and out on the balcony.

Practically he takes office the moment he is elected, unless he was not a bishop yet.

The cardinals kneel during the Papal inauguration. They have people kneel (not all cardinals for Benedict's inauguration, some were lay people) so it's more ceremonial than that all cardinals kneel and accept the pope. (This does vary per pope, so take your liberties! At one point it was all cardinals). This is called the Act of Homage, which will help you google it further.

They also receive the pallium and the Fisherman's Ring during this Inauguration.

It used to be coronation, including a snazzy tiara but they have done away with that. I don't know about the throne though, couldn't immediately find that.

Francis' inauguration was on the 19th of March, 6 days after he was elected. There, six cardinals (two of each order) professed their obedience to Francis on behalf of the College of Cardinals.
