it's important to shalem to be (seen as) competent and reliable. that's something you can see even before he joined the troupe, with the other village children clinging to his clothes as they're taken in, and him being shown distributing blankets and making sure everyone's comfortable on their first night. in present day he's constantly saying "fret not" and "rest assured" and "be at ease". multiple of his voice lines suggest he's someone doctor goes to when they're trying to hide from their problems. at every point in his life he has worked to give off the feeling of "if shalem is here I'll be safe."

this does not seem to contradict "modest and gentle", but I think that's the point. shalem being a dependable and trustworthy figure is perfectly fine to the troupe, it's more dramatic to be killed by someone you trust than someone you don't. he seems to be more direct and outspoken by nature than what he was assigned, but it's precisely because it's pretty similar to how he was anyway that the distinction becomes impossible to discern and he can't trust anything he does or wants, including this very desire to be someone competent and reliable.
