Another thing I've noticed about Eliza and Patrick's relationship throughout seasons — all their touches most of the times are actually platonic. Those are mostly handshakes. Sometimes they pretend to be a married couple and Patrick puts his palm over Eliza's hand, or opens the door for her. In one scene in e6 s4 you can see for a second how he helps her up when she almost falls, running away from a criminal. But it is mostly off screen, so you'd have to really look to notice it.

Yes, Patrick was ment to be William's rival, but the show makes effort to let you know that Eliza intentionally holds hands only with William. Any time Scarnash interactions get too flirtatious they do not touch, at least not directly — she hands him a cane she picked for him, he gives her his business card, or they drink together and clink glasses. That's it. The only time they touch (two times) in a way that is meaningful is, and you probably know it, in their final scene together in the jail cell (s4 e6) and when they share a hug in season five. Other than that it boils down to intense eye contact, smiles and laughter.

Like, yes, it is "platonic", I guess, but in a way queer-coded couples are. They are one accidental hand touch away from romantic. (But maybe it's all in my head. The type of paranoia you get when you start diting videos for the first time in your life.)

P.S. I once said that they were doomed from the start — this could be one of the signs. Eliza was never allowed to be equally attracted to William and Patrick, or even have any romantic feeling for Patrick she could reflect on. He, however (that's just a thought) was supposed to see her as potentially more than a friend. Maybe, if Stuart Martin stayed, Eliza would be forced to choose between William and Patrick, but it feels like in canon and every version of it she would always choose the detective inspector.

ScarNash in 2x04 (Miss Scarlet & the Duke)

Even in his introductory episode, everything Patrick does makes him better than William as Eliza's love interest.

Demonstrating respect vs disrespect:

William: Tries to shut her out of her own investigation. Acts like it is a big favor he's been manipulated into when he lets her listen to Fitzroy's findings. Don't get me wrong, Eliza does try to manipulate William from time to time, but 1) he don't leave her a lot of other options and 2) it's his go-to assumption. Sometimes Eliza is actually hurt or upset with him. Sometimes...Actually all the time she would like a little freaking respect thrown her way.

Patrick: Offers to shake her hand upon introduction. Asks her to work for him and is so committed he is willing to dedicate time and funds to get his way. Is so impressed with her progress he concocts a plan to steal her results. He acknowledges poaching the results from her in front the client, his staff and other witnesses, rather than passing them off as his purely own.

Compatible vs incompatible methods:

William: Relies on his position at Scotland Yard both to convince Eliza to turn over the files, and to pull Fitzroy into his investigation. Eliza has no authority to wield.

Patrick: Patrick blackmails Sinclaire. Goes undercover as Inspector Bates. Tries to trick Eliza using Sinclaire. Eliza blackmails Potts, goes undercover as Miss Belfry, DOES trick Patrick using Sinclaire.

Expressions of Admiration/Insults:

William: Calls her, in front of Ivy and Potts, "an opportunist with no thought for anything other than her own gain" and brings up Potts' insults: "impossible, untrustworthy, and unchristian." Claims that he's praised her before, but does not do it at any point in this episode. Instead of complimenting her trick with Sinclaire, he belittles her having trusted him in the past. Eliza, on the other hand, does express admiration for his rescue of Fitzroy, which William manages to be insulted by.

Patrick: Calls her "determined, ambitious, hungry. The holy trinity." Calls them "kindred spirits". Calls her "impressive" in front of the room, even when he thinks he has beaten her. Congratulates her in person on her "magnificent win" after realizing he got his ass kicked and says "well played." Responds to her rubbing salt in wound by saying "What a woman."

Even as the antagonist, he is the better option.

Ok, "Miss Scarlet" fandom, when were you going to tell me?

Apparently, Eliza has a middle name that starts with "H". She has a middle name and I know it's not uncommon, but I didn't know she had one up until i decided to rewatch s2 e4. I googled what girl names were popular in 1850s and the ones that start with "H" were Helen, Harriet, Hazel and a few others, but I like to think that Eliza's middle name is Henrietta after her father.

In the series noone uses it, noone calls her anything other than "Eliza", "Lizzy" or "Ms Scarlet" even though her father knew her middle name (but maybe he didn't use it because it reminded him how much they were alike). Ivy prefers to call her Lizzy, and even if William knew her middle name, which he could, he doesn't use it either.

Now I wonder what it is, because the authors could've named her after another famous character or a real person and I just need to know.

P.S. for all ScarNash fans — Patrick also knows her middle name and knowing how often him and Eliza use disguises I think he could've accidentally called her by it and then had to explain how and why he knows that name.
