This winter I've been consuming TikToks of Canadians and Americans who've moved to Australia, and even they find our winters unbearably cold. That seems odd, right? Like, we know that their winters are much harsher than ours, they have snow! And yet, winters here are worse?
The answer, it turns out, is as simple as it is depressing - Australian homes are flat out not designed for cold in any way, shape or form. Not a speck of insulation designed to keep heat in. Our shelters are designed to (maybe) keep the wind out, and otherwise keep the temperature inside and outside equalized.
Perhaps the simplest way to put it? Australian homes do not have central heating units. In the US and UK, most homes have a central system that is used take air from outside, heat it up via furnace, and bring it inside. Australian homes lack this feature - if you want air exchange, you have to open a window. We do have heaters of all kinds, but they are only heaters - they heat the air that's already inside, they don't allow for air exchange.
Does this mean that our homes are more designed for summer? Have we merely made the mistake of optimizing our homes for the wrong season.
Nope. Our shelters are designed to (maybe) keep the wind out, and otherwise keep the temperature inside and outside equalized. If it's 35C outside, a home without active cooling is going to be about 35C inside, too.
Australians live in sheds. We live in opulent sheds. That's why every year we get surprised by the cold, because in other places, home at least stays warm. We cannot escape our cold by going inside!
Australia, as a country, has developed a weird national collective amnesia that winter ever exists in this country to the point that every solstice the national broadcaster runs an article going 'Australians once again shocked at to discover this new thing called "cold"'.
