In early 1995 the Quintanilla family discovered that Yolanda Saldívar, president of Selenas fan club and manager of her boutiques, had been embezzling money from the fan club and decided to fire her. Saldívar contacted Selena and asked to meet so she could give her some paperwork for tax purposes. They agreed to meet at a Days Inn on March 31, 1995. When Selena demanded the paperwork Saldívar stalled, and began telling about being raped in Mexico.
Being the kind natured person Selena was, she drove Saldívar to a local hospital where it was found that no rape had taken place. So they went back to the hotel where Selena asked once more for the paperwork.
Selena told Saldívar that she could no longer be trusted, and began to leave the room. At 11:48 am, Saldívar drew a gun from her purse and shot Selena once in the back, critically wounding her. Selena ran toward the lobby trying to get help, Saldívar chasing behind her calling her a bitch.
Before Selena collapsed to the floor, she was able to name Saldívar as her assailant and gave the room number where she was. Once the ambulance arrived they transported her to a local hospital, where she died from loss of blood at 1:05 pm.
Selena was only 23.
