she's  stopped  right  in  her  tracks,  head  whipping  toward  henry  as  she  watches  the  possum  peek  out  from  behing  the  bags.  a  cheek  splitting  grin  spreads  against  her  features,  hands  moving  to  cover  her  mouth.  “oh  my  god,  henry,  a  friend  !”  she  whisper  yells,  nodding  over  at  the  other.  “i  might  have  potato  chips  in  my  tote,”  her  bag  was  neverending,  and  she  almost  always  had  a  crushed  snack  at  the  bottom.  “i  wonder  what  the  rules  on  taking  her  home  are  ?”

The sound of tint scratches found their way into Henry's ear. He had been chatting and taking a quick smoke break when he heard them. "Hold on." He threw up a hand to stop the other person from talking. More scratches. "You hear that?" He took another second, the silence turned into more scratches, Henry cocked his head to the side. Curiosity distracting him from his conversation. After a few beats a tiny gray head popped up from behind some trash bags. "Oh sick, a possum. I should go get him a snack."

“to  be  fair,  i  don't  think  dating  on  the  apps  is  for  anyone,”  she  points  out,  tilting  her  own  bottle  toward  him.  it's  creeping  toward  her  typical  exit  time,  but  she  couldn't  resist  a  good  disaster  story.  “what  happened  ?  did  you  get  catfished  ?  or  worse,  you  fell  for  those  photoshopped  pictures  and  got  scammed  out  of  your  hard  earned  money  ?”

By the time he'd been sitting in the same stool for over an hour without so much as a text back, Charlie had come to the conclusion that his date was not planning on showing. He finished off the bottle in his hand, letting out a low sigh before ordering another. "I don't think this whole datin' on the apps thing is for me."

“lark,  you're  so  dramatic,”  head  shakes,  scoffing.  he  knows  she  means  well,  is  sure  that  her  older  sister  instincts  are  kicking  in,  but  she  could  use  the  rush.  sometimes,  he  wanted  to  hold  her  by  the  shoulders  and  shake  her  stress  out.  “these  things  are  perfectly  safe,  they  don't  let  you  rent  them  with  no  license  for  no  reason  …  besides,  we  are  gonna  relax  !  what,  you  think  we're  gonna  be  on  these  all  day  or  something  ?”

❛  this  thing  is  a  death  trap,  julian.  i'm  only  on  this  thing  to  talk  you  off  of  yours.  ❜   for  now,  she  resists  the  childish  urge  to  solidly  shove  him  off  the  jet  ski,  though  she  feels  it  increasing  by  the  second.   ❛  i  thought  we  were  relaxing,  ❜   she  says,  as  if  she  were  capable  of  it,   ❛  if  you  wanted  to  cosplay  a  jackass  cast  member,  surely  one  of  your  little  friends  could've  come  with  you  instead?  ❜

he  blinks,  slowly  at  first,  then  he  can't  help  but  laugh.  “i  said  i  should've  brought  one  five  minutes  ago  !  earth  to  margaret,”  fingers  snap  together.  “are  you  ready  for  this  or  what  ?”

“   bullshit   !   ”   a   knock   to   the   shoulder   ,   light   &   inoffensive   .   “   how   can   i   record   when   i'm   literally   all   hands   on   deck   .   you   got   a   go   pro   or   something   you   can   strap   to   your   big   ass   head   ?   ”

there's  a  few  moments  before  venus  catches  sight  of  julian,  where  he  gets  to  stand  back  and  admire  the  sight  of  venus  and  lola.  if  he  didn't  have  one  hand  full  of  bags  and  a  bouqet  of  flowers  behind  his  back,  he  would've  pulled  out  his  phone  to  snap  a  picture.  “no,  actually,  they  were  all  out,”  he  teases,  grin  growing.  “but  good  news,  they  had  these  !”  pulling  the  bouqet  in  front  of  him,  flowers  held  out  to  her.  and,  in  an  attempt  to  keep  his  cool,  “did  miss  lola  give  you  any  trouble  ?”

it's  not  the  first  time  venus  and  lola  had  sat  outside  on  this  very  bench  while  julian  ran  into  the  market  to  grab  something,  and  she's  more  than  sure  it  won't  be  the  last.  the  best  part  of  cider  point  being  a  small  town  was  venus  not  having  to  feel  bad  that  her  and  lola  were  definitely  taking  up  the  entirety  of  the  bench.  but,  what,  was  venus  supposed  to  leave  her  on  the  ground  ?  she  simply  couldn't  do  that.  she's  absentmindedly  petting  the  dog  beside  her  when  julian  comes  back  into  sight.  “did you get  what  you  needed  ?”

“a  vest  won't  help  you,  but  a  friend  with  a  first  aid  card  will,”  was  his  card  expired  ?  probably.  but,  he  didn't  feel  that  margaret  needed  to  know  that.  “what  do  you  mean  how  ?”  he  asks,  head  shaking  at  them.  “you're  not  listening  to  me,  and  that's  a  shame.  you  are  supposed  to  be  recording,  duh  !”

“    yeah    well    ,    what    if    i    fall    off    and    hit    my    head    ?    a    vest    won't    help    me    then    .    ”    margaret    retorts    ,    glossing    over    the    dumbass    comment    because    well    — he's    right    .    a    slight    grimace    ,    head    shaking    .    “    how    the    hell    are    you    going    to    get    this    on    instagram    ?    do    you    have    a    drone    that    i    don't    know    of    ?    ”

“they  know  me  by  name  up  at  the  shore  store,”  he's  sure  they  knew  most  people  in  this  town  by  name,  but  he  hoped  it  would  help  get  his  point  across.  by  his  standards,  he  was  basically  a  professional.  “support  would  be  taking  out  your  phone  and  yet  !  i  don't  even  think  you  have  one  !”

laughter  grows  louder  ,  returning  bookmark  before  closing  book  and  dumping  it  on  top  of  her  tote  bag.  "when  was  the  last  time  that  you  rode  one  of  these  ,  eh?"  she  makes  an  observer  aloud  ,  head  tilted  as  she  examines  the  mode  of  transport.  "i'm  always  supportive  ,  thank  you  very  much!"

“if  i  accidentally  fall  off,  will  you  personally  e  -  mail  mtv's  recklessness  for  me  ?  i  think  i  have  what  it  takes  to  give  them  the  comeback  of  the  century.”  he  pauses,  brows  furrowing  as  he  realizes  he  does  not  want  to  wipe  out.  “but  let's  hope  i  don't  have  to,  okay  ?”

there  was  quiet  laughter  as  she  followed  after  him.  a  part  of  her  wanted  to  join,  but  instead,  she  responded,  “don't  worry,  i  got  you.  i'll  make  sure  to  get  everything  on  video.  at  least  if  you  accidentally  fall  off,  that'll  be  recorded  too.”

“no  one's  ever  been  banned  for  having  fun,  adi,"  he  says  as  if  it's  fact,  and  not  the  actual  reason  most  people  are  banned  from  things.  he  revs  at  the  jets,  rocking  with  the  vehicle  as  it  threatens  to  shoot  off.  a  loopy  grin  shoots  over  at  her,  readier  than  ever  to  attempt  his  stunt.  “count  me  down  so  i  can  make  you  eat  your  words  !”

she  shaded  her  eyes  with  her  hand,      standing  ankle-deep  where  the  surf  lapped  at  the  dock,     laughter  already  tugging  at  her  mouth.     “  donuts?     julian,     you’re  gonna  be  the  first  person  in  cider  point  history  to  get  banned  from  water  sports.  ”     she  shook  her  head,     grin  widening  as  she  called  out  over  the  engine’s  hum.     “  at  least  let  me  grab  my  phone  before  you  wipe  out  —  if  you’re  gonna  go  viral,     i  want  credit  for  the  footage.  ”

“very  bold  of  your  cat  to  judge  your  pasta,  when  they  eat  kibble  or  preserved  meat  in  a  can  daily,”  she  laughs,  wishing  that  she'd  grabbed  a  cart  herself  as  she  watches  adi  continue  to  wrangle  her  groceries.  “do  you  want  me  to  grab  something  for  you  ?”  her  own  hands  weren't  very  full,  she'd  only  been  at  harvey's  for  one  thing,  after  all.  “depends,”  she  begins,  tone  teasing.  “is  pasta  on  the  menu,  or  will  you  be  serving  me  your  college  diet  special  ?  because  if  it's  pasta  you  can  definitely  count  me  in.”

she  huffs  a  quiet  laugh,    shifting  the  basket  higher  on  her  hip.     steadying  the  rebellious  pickles  with  her  wrist,     she  leans  in  to  read  the  label  like  it  might  confess  its  secrets.     “  google  and  you?    unstoppable  duo.  ”     she  teases,     then  takes  the  jar  from  ofie’s  hand  and  holds  it  up  to  the  fluorescent  light  like  a  gemstone  before  tucking  it  into  the  basket,     a  small  victory.    “  not  hosting,     unless  you  count  me  and  a  very  judgmental  cat  who  thinks  pasta  is  beneath  them.  ”     she  adds,     amused.    “  but  i  promised  myself  i’d  eat  something  that  isn’t  coffee  or  a  instant  ramen.  ”    a  beat,     softer.     “  if  you’re  free  later…     we  could  test  your  tried-and-true  and  take  a  harbor  lap  after?  "

“oh  my  god,”  his  eyes  widen,  hand  raising  to  his  chest.  “so,  the  rumor  that  the  employees  here  can't  say  shake  shack  isn't  true  ?  i  thought  that  place  was  banned  here,"  he'd  heard  no  such  thing,  but  if  she  could  poke  at  him,  it  was  only  fair  for  him  to  poke  back.  he'd  even  contemplated  a  carefully  preformed  stunt,  but  decided  that  he  didn't  feel  like  having  a  sore  back  today.  “why  do  they  have  you  doing  it  like  real  mops  don't  exist,  anyways  ?”

"Careful," she hurriedly blurts, bucket beside her wobbling from the bump of her elbow as she gestures to the sign, "wet floor," as if her being on her hands and knees on the tiles isn't enough. "If you slip, we'll probably go bust paying you off, and whilst I can find another job, everyone will have to go out of town to the cold, characterless Shake Shack for their milkshakes, and you wouldn't want that, now would you?"

“i'm  on  a  fudge  run  today,”  she  answers,  from  the  other  side  of  the  small  shop.  it's  one  of  the  many  things  she  loves  about  this  town,  always  being  in  ear  shot.  it's  a  treat  for  a  nosy  girl  like  ofeliya,  turning  toward  the  other  and  shaking  her  box  of  fudge  in  the  air  like  a  prize.  “but  i'll  let  you  in  on  my  little  secret  …”  she  looks  around,  one  hand  coming  up  to  cup  her  mouth  even  though  she  is  not  whispering,  “i  come  here  twice  a  week  for  taffies,  too.”

theodora  sighs,  eyes  bouncing  around  the  shop.  she  was  basically  a  kid  in  this  candy  store,  eyes  most  definitely  too  big  for  her  stomach.  “what  are  you  getting  ?”  she  asks  aloud,  knowing  there's  at  least  one  other  patron  in  the  shop.  “i  feel  like  i'm  always  too  SPOILED  FOR  CHOICE  when  i  come  here.”

“classic  is  purely  tomato  sauce,  pretty much,”  she  shrugs,  biting  at  the  inside  of  her  cheek  as  she  watches  the  girl  balance  her  basket  (  and  herself  ),  almost  waiting  for  disaster  to  strike.  “that's  what  our  friend  google  told  me  when  i  asked,  at  least.  traditional  usually  has  meats  or  other  ingredients  in  it,  but  surely  there's  a  better  way  they  could  phrase  that.”  reaches  out  for  her  tried and true sauce,  a  glass  jar  that  she'd  asked  harvey  to  order  for  three  months  exactly.  “i  swear  by  this  stuff,  if  you're  feeling  adventurous.  are  you  hosting  a  dinner  tonight,  or  something  ?”

her  basket  was  already  too  full  —  snacks  balanced  on  top  of  cereal,     a  jar  of  pickles  threatening  to  roll  out  with  every  step.     she  crouched  in  the  aisle,     scanning  two  nearly  identical  brands  of  pasta  sauce  with  a  frown  of  intense  concentration.    “  what’s  the  difference  between  ‘classic’  and  ‘traditional’  anyway?  ”    she  asked  out  loud,     half  to  herself,     half  to  whoever  happened  to  overhear.     “  they  can’t  both  be  lying,     right?  ”

“why  would  you  wish  that  on  me  ?”  brows  furrow,  head  turned  over  his  shoulder  to  look  toward  her.  he's  only  teasing,  but  he  knows  it'll  get  under  her  skin  nonetheless.  “you  should  be  being  supportive  right  now.  i  can  give  you  some  pointers,  if  you  want  ?”

sitting  on  the  edge  of  the  coast  ,  engrossed  in  the  next  chapter  of  a  book  she'd  started  that  morning  and  couldn't  put  down.  gaze  lifted  temporarily  from  the  page  ,  double  -  taking  and  mouth  falling  open  with  a  short  laugh.  "  i  don't  think  you  should  be  left  to  your  own  devices  with  that  ,  something  about  this  pairing  screams  injury  -  waiting  -  to  -  happen.  "  head  shakes  with  amusement  ,  she  knows  better  than  to  expect  him  to  listen  to  her.

“are  we  not  two  siblings  at  the  beach  ?”  he  asks,  looking  around  for  effect.  “because,  we  look  like  two  siblings  at  the  beach  to  me.  two  siblings  at  the  beach,  on  jet  skis,  and  one  of  them  is  sounding  extremely  ungrateful."

❛  you  said  a  ‘ siblings  beach  day ’,  not  a  ‘ lark  spends  what  little  free time  she  has  nursing  her  idiot  brother  in  the  hospital  emergency  room  day ’ ,  get  off  that  thing  before  you  hurt  yourself.  ❜
