As a Fairy Tale nerd, I was thrilled to see the Cinderella-narrative used for Penguin in Gotham. Especially as it was way closer to any original interpretations than it had been in the popular adaptations. (For those who don’t know the gruesome details: The step-sisters hack off their respective toes and heel to fit their feet into the shoe and are later blinded by doves.)
In Fanfiction it is picked up again, but more often than not I see adaptions of The Little Mermaid - and, probably due to Oswald’s general deformities in the non-Gotham versions and his disabilities there, Beauty and the Beast.
But the one Fairy Tale I have yet to see in Fanfiction, that always makes me think of him and Ed when we’re watching it, is: The Peasant’s Wise Daughter
In which a ruler - depending on version it’s a King or a burgomaster - poses riddles to the subjects that get themselves into a pickle. Only to be upstaged by a clever peasant girl that always finds the answer or a loophole in order to show him his own faults. Something she keeps doing after they eventually marry which makes him angry to the point that he tells her to leave. Still, he allows her to take the one thing with her that she likes best in the castle. So she drugs him and takes him with her and he finally accepts that she’ll always be more clever than him.
If that is not enough to convince you how conveniently fitting this one is, feel free to check out the
Brothers Grimm Version
Czech Version
Serbian Version
They all have slightly different takes, but essentially tell the same story of a clever couple finding their way to each other.
By the way: A German movie version from 2009 also includes the King’s interest in astronomy and a cousin eagerly waiting for the throne whose wife doesn’t shy from trying to get rid of the competition.
So, who’s up for writing a version of this Fairy Tale for a change?
I'm glad Jimin reminded them about "loving yourself" and i'm glad ARMY is as baffled and outraged as I was when they talked down about themselves. They're all beautiful.

There was an old library, south of the forest in Sekihan, and the path there was cobbled and staggering. It depended on who you asked—the widows of soldiers in the past war believed the road was formed by the steps of the Gashadokuro, a skeletal giant that was made from the bones of a thousand fallen men. The ones that hung holly above their doors believed it to be the paw prints of black cats, leading you astray from the crooked road back home.Â
Kennyo believed differently.Â
He believed that the wayfarers that had found their way to the boundary between forest and field were looking for something new. Something troubling. They were waiting for a rise in the tide, the grey of smoke and storm that christened the air in the midst of a hail of bullets. They were not looking for something pretty.Â
They were looking for a reckoning. They were looking for change, and change was what Kennyo needed.Â
