Oliver was quiet as he listened to his injuries and he took a deep breath. He remembered his injuries too and how similar they were to his. âIâm so sorry. You⊠You donât deserve this.â He said and he took a deep breath before rubbing his neck. âIt was back in New York. The last show I was in. I⊠I was seeing this guy and it turned out to the the directorâs partner.â He swallowed. âHim finding out wasnât good as you can tell and he made me leave Broadway.â He explained. âI didnât know he was with him. I would never do that, you know?â He said before stopping himself. âBut this isnât about me. This is about you and making sure youâre okay.âÂ
The man listened as to why he didnât want to tell his sisters, but could understand where he was coming from. His own family didnât know about his injuries or why he left New York so he understood completely. âItâs okay. She doesnât have to know right now. We donât have to worry here.â He promised. âNo. We can get Jewel and go to my place. You both can stay there for a few days or longer if you need. Let me take care of you.â
x
Patrick swallowed trying again to sit up slightly without hurting himself and managed to prop himself up on his pillow. âWell, this is what I get for trying to help a friend. Although I canât blame her.â he admitted. He lsitened as Oliver told him what happened to him. His heart sinking, and he shook his head. âNo, its okay. Iâm sorry, Oliver. That shouldnât have happened.â he let out a sigh. âI guess neither of us enjoyed our time there. Patrick had left before Oliver had for different reasons. He hadnât really told him or his sister why. He shook his head when the man offered to let him stay with him. âNo...Ollie, I couldnât ask you to do that. You have a job and a life. Youâve already done so much just being here for me.â He gave his hand a squeeze and let go, to swing his legs over the bed carefully and slowly stand. âGod...itâs Sunday too, isnt it? Motherâs Day.â he exhaled a sigh knowing it had always been a big deal in his family. âIf I told mom about this it would ruin her day. I donât want that.â He knew that his family would probably be doing something without him, probably wondering where he was by now.Â

âHa! Thatâs debatable.â Leanne scoffed, pealing the wrapper back as she are more of the bar. âHow the hell would you know how flexible I am in bed?â She gave him a look before dropping the candy bars and gripping on to the counter to do a couple lunges to get loose before dropping into a split. Sure it took her longer than she used too, and she had no idea how the hell she was going to get up off the floor but she was determined to prove a point. âStill think so?â She arched her brows. âHey! Come back here and help me up!â She grumped as he went off to get his chips. âYouâve always been able to read me, just like your father could.â While she was close to all of her kids in different ways, Patrick was in tune to her emotions. Sometimes it felt like that shared a physic connection. He could see through her in ways the others couldnât. âYour the only one that can fool me too.â She could always sense when the girls were lying or something was off, but Patrick knew just what to say to convince her of anything. âYouâd probably Intimate him, honey. I doubt heâs ever seen a winkie like yours.â Leanne remembered being shocked by the size of it when changing his first diaper in the hospital. Malcom was so proud of course, and theyâd often made jokes about itâs generous size. âHey now. I heard that.â Leanne placed her hand on his back. âI know Darius broke your heart, but you canât let that be a reason to swear off men forever.â She frowned, hating to see her boy in pain. âYou gotta get out there and have some fun.â She laughed when he called Brady pussy whipped.
âSheâs defiantly the top. He was a mess, worried I wouldnât approve or Maggie would be upset I knew.â It was sweet really, the way he cared for her daughter. âLeave your sisters hook up alone. Heâs fine how he is. Maggie likes rugged boys. Iâm going to invite him over for dinner and I donât want you to tease him about it.â She narrows her eyes in a warning way. âThat chode made you and your sisters. I will not have you talk down about it. Donât act so traumatized, think of your dad having to see yours. Mr. Human tripod.â She walked around naked sometimes too, they were an open family. âYour welcome for my donate genes.â She grinned. âHoney I was gonna wash it first. Iâm not completely feral.â She teased about the toy. âI think big, hairy men are sexy. Nick doesnât seem like he would be. Thatâs gonna take some getting used too.â She mused, getting some frozen peas from the fridge to ice her sore upper thighs from her stunt. âHe could be a verse? Im sure heâd want to be a top once he sees what youâve got packing.â She pointed out. âGoing out with him for a night isnât dating. Youâve been looking at him like he was more than a friend for a long time, thatâs all Iâm saying.â Leanne threw her hands up. âPATRICK RHODES! YOU LEAVE THAT POOR MANS DICK ALONE!!! You worry about OllieâsâŠâ She swatted his arm playfully, her cheeks red like a tomato. âIâm confident I can get to work on my own, thank you! Do not call him that.â She still had a killer wrack and was a freak in the sheets. âYou do have a point. Iâm sure heâs want me to be happy..â She hoped it wasnât too soon, her heart was still healing. âNo oneâs seen me naked apart from your father and the pool boy. Hopefully he likes what he sees. Maybe I should send him one of those sexy pictures you kids take? me in the bath, with bubbles.. but showing a little.. you know? See if that gets a rouse?â
x
Patrick rolled his eyes seeing her do a split. âI bet you canât get back up though,â he commented as he walked away and heard her yell at him for not helping. He knew it was impressive but he wouldnât give her the satisfaction of being right. He pulled up a stool to sit at the counter, âOnly when I have to,â he admitted. Truthfully he never made it a habit to lie to his mother but he was well aware that he got away with more than his sisters, usually. He let go a snort. âIâm flattered, but youâre exaggerating. If it was as big as you say I would have gone into stripping or porn or something.â he said, though he couldnât complain. He let out a sigh when she brought up Darius again. âNo, not forever. I just donât want to rush into something with anyone right now.â he knew his mother just wanted to see him happy with someone but right now he was fine with being alone.Â
He shrugged when she mentioned Brady. âYouâd be surprised. Sometimes guys like him are freaks in bed. You probably just scared him.â he was use to the bold way his mother spoke but he knew most people werenât. âIâm just saying he could us a make over.â he gave his mother a look. âYouâre going to scare him away, mom. Heâs probably thinking youâre expecting a marriage proposal or something, introducing him to the family and all when all he wants is to do the no pants dance with your daughter.â Although he knew Brady was close to their family already and it wasnât like he was some random guy Maggie had found at the bar. He frowned when she brought up Oliver, feeling his face get slightly warm. âI have not! Look, Oliver is cute and sweet but heâs not what I usually go for so please just drop it.â A smile grew on his face as they talked about Nick and he pulled out his phone. âToo late Iâm already texting it to Maggie and Liv.â His expression softened as he watched her. âI know. You can take things slow if you need to. I know thatâs probably not your style.â he commented. He snorted. âWho does that?â he shook his head. âI mean, thatâs something you should save for after the first date at least. Why donât you start there? You can ask him on a date and Iâll help you pick out something to wear.â he promised.

The man reminded Oliver of his own time in the hospital years ago looking almost the same way. It made him wonder what had happened to him and hoped he was ultimately okay. âYou do not.â He assured him before walking over and sitting on the chair by him. âHey, donât move, okay? Not if itâs hurting.â He spoke softly and then listened to what went on. He reached out and took the manâs hand gently and continued listening to him as he went over his mom and everything before taking a moment and nodding. âYou donât have to thank me. Iâd always come.â Oliver told him and took a deep breath. âIâm sorry this happened to you. I⊠I had something similar happen to me in New York. This guy I was seeing didnât tell me he was with someone and beat me up. I didnât call anyone either.â He told him and swallowed. âBut, okay. Youâre mom doesnât have to see you like this. Iâm the only one who knows, yeah?â He asked curiously. âWeâll keep it that way. I can take you to your house? Are you being released?â
x
Patrick was embarrassed by the whole situation more than anything. He didnât want anyone to see him looking the way he did. He sighed. âIâm just lucky I didnât get any teeth knocked out, or required stitches,â He felt him take his hand, which warmed his heart a little. âItâs just a fractured rib. I mean I can walk around and stuff at least. They said it should only take a week or two to heal. And I landed on my wrist wrong. Thatâll take even longer. Iâll probably have to be off work for a while.â Patrick swallowed knowing the next few days were going to be rough. He looked up at Oliver. âI knew you would.â he said. He listened as he told him about his own experience. âMy god, Ollie. I didnât know. When was this?â he wondered if it had been when both of them lived in New York. Although he found some comfort in knowing there was a mutual understanding between them. There was always the stereotype that gay men were soft, and it was humiliating when something like this happened to encourage that.
âYou are. I didnât tell my sisters. Mom would get it out of Liv, no problem. And Maggie might tell her just to get me in trouble.â He knew that maybe that wouldnât be the case with Maggie but he didnât want to risk it. âIâll have to tell her at some point. She finds out everything. But I really just donât want to upset her. I know that something like this will, and sheâs not doing well. Ever since we lost my dad...â he let out a sigh. âShe hasnât been herself.â He nodded again. âI am. And I left Jewel there all alone. Sheâs been there since last night.â he felt terrible because he hadnât even thought about his dog until now, although he always left her with plenty of food and water. âIf you could take me there that would be great. Maybe my aunt Katie can come help me get around until I figure out how Iâm going to break this to my mom.â He sort of wanted to wait a few days and maybe it wouldnât seem like as big of a deal as it was.Â

âIâm not surprised, it was Jake, wasnât it?â He was the only one who was old enough to know how to sent a Tik Tok. âIt is better, and I think you look great.â She was so glad that everyone she loved was here in one place. That was what she cared about, not the fact that it was her birthday. âTheyâre outside on the deck. The kids are playing on the swing set, I just came in here to get some water.â Liv wasnât surprised when Patrick asked her if she wasnât feeling well. He could always tell, ever since they were kids. In response to his question, she shook her head and let out a laugh. âNo, thatâs not why Iâm not feeling well. Although, I did have some cake.â She couldnât resist when it was just sitting there in the kitchen. âIâm going to preface this by telling you that Iâve been kind of seeing someone,â she started with, hoping heâd start to piece it together. âIâm not feeling well because Iâm actually pregnant.âÂ
x
âIt was whichever one hacked your account, but I could tell by the text it wasnât you. So yes, probably Jake.â he agreed with a chuckle. âI hope they appreciate my efforts.â It was his mission after all to be the coolest uncle, although he had no competition on his side of the family. He sat down in a chair across from her when she told him that wasnât why she was feeling sick. âAs long as thereâs some left for the rest of us. Because I remember that one year when you got to it the day before the party. I mean it was momâs fault for putting it on the low shelf in the fridge.â he laughed. He raised his brows not expecting to hear what came out of her mouth. âYouâre seeing someone? Like seriously seeing someone?â he inquired giving a little gasp. âDo I need to have âthe brother talkâ with someone? Where does he live? Iâm gonna go beat him up, right now. Dressed like this.â he added motioning to his outfit. It was a laughable statement because Patrick had never fought anyone in his life aside from Maggie when they were kids. His jaw dropped at what she said next. âOh my god, Olivia.. you let this man knock you up?â he had so many questions he didnât know where to start, but for the most part he was excited for her. âWhen did you find out?âÂ

Harper shrugged at him. âI just donât think I would be very good at it.â She told him as it was not as though she had any real talent when it came to singing. Her artistic talent was far more likely to be the type you could see, not the type you could hear. âBut you are right, everyone is too drunk to care. Perhaps it would be fine.â Harper replied as she tried to weigh her options for the night. She knew that it likely wouldnât be a big deal either way, and might even be fun if it didnât go completely well.  âMaybe people wonât even notice if I am bad at it because youâll steal the show. But yeah, I have been having fun so far.â Harper added as it wasnât like the night had been completely boring while she watched the others sing.
x
He smiled listening to her considering it. âI mean, no pressure. It can be intimidating. I was a stage kid though, so nothing embarrasses me.â he shrugged before taking a sip of his drink, finishing it off. âMaybe another drink is in order? Some liquid courage?â he offered, since he was going to order another one anyways. âAlthough you donât want to over do it, because it makes it harder to stay on beat, you know?â he explained before waving his hand. âNo, you would be fine.â he assured her. âTell you what, if you donât want to sing then Iâll go solo, but Iâm dedicating the next song to you,â he smirked before he realized he didnât know her name. âAnd you are?â

Shelby chewed on her lip, not completely convinced she wouldnât have taken the little dog out, but nodded anyway. âSorry for freaking you out.â She smirked, his story about her chasing giant balls was kinda cute. âShe sounds like a bad ass.â Shelby admired that. âAnimals in general..â She shrugged. âIâm more of a bird person, but I wouldnât mind a dog.â She had no place at her current living situation for one, but if someone handed her a puppy she wouldnât refuse it. âWhatâs her name? Is she.. cool with pets?â Shelby was hesitant to reach out.
x
âItâs all good.â he assured the woman. âThese things are to be expected when you go to the park.â he grinned looking at Jewel. âShe is, though. I mean, she loves people but as soon as she sees a bigger dog, all of a sudden she thinks sheâs tough shit.â he explained with a laugh. He had been trying to train her out of the aggressive way she approached other dogs worrying that one day she was going to get hurt. âBirds? Like a parakeet or something?â he asked. âI always wanted a cat myself, but my momâs allergic.â he shrugged. âOh, yeah. Defintely. Her nameâs Jewel. Iâm Patrick, by the way.â he added.

Trevor raised an eyebrow at the mention of Armani. He wasnât ignorant to the world of high fashion, he just couldnât afford it. Normally people who could afford designed clothes didnât come to a laundromat. He blinked when the other asked how the machines worked. To him it all seemed pretty self explanatory. âYouâre kidding, right?â He chuckled, then realized he was serious. âUh, yeah. Thatâs all there is to it. Coins, push the button for your wash cycle, add soap, press start.â
x
Patrick became embarrassed by the reaction he got, covering his face with his hand. âGod, is it obvious my mom did my laundry until I was eighteen?â he chuckled softly. He nodded pressing the buttons. âGot it, thanks. You know these machines are a little more high tech than the ones in my apartment building. And theyâre probably not broken down eighty percent of the time. As long as they get the job done, Iâm happy.â he let out a small sigh watching the machine fill with water. He leaned against an empty machine, unsure of what to do now since he knew it would be a while. âYou must come here a lot, I take it?â he asked, picking up an outdated magazine to flip through to pass the time.Â

It was early in the morning when he got the phone call. Oliver was getting ready to go to Williamsburg for his classes, but after hearing that Patrick was in the hospital, he cancelled his classes for the day and raced over to the hospital. He wondered what was going on and why he was being called instead of his family. Or maybe heâd get there and Liv would be there. He wasnât sure, but he wasnât going to not show up for any of the Rhodes. He told the nurse he was there to see Patrick and was led to a room. He saw the state of him and he quickly went to him. âOh my god, Patrick. What happened? Are you okay?â
x
Patrick found comfort hearing Oliverâs voice. He was someone he had known since childhood and considered close even though they had drifted apart a few times. He caught a glimpse of his face in the mirror that was on the wall. One of his eyes was swollen and purple. His lower lip had been busted and a bandage covered a wound on his head. âGod, I look hideous. Donât look at me.â he sighed. He tried to move to a more comfortable upright position hissing as pain shot up his upper body and he gave up. âItâs not as bad as it looks.â he assured Oliver. âI.. got beat up at the Barnyard last night. I was there with my friend Marcie.â he wondered what had happened to Marcie after he was taken to the hospital. He hadnât heard from her since. âIt was some asshole who use to date her. He saw us dancing and well... this is what happened.â he gestured to his face. âI just needed a ride back to my apartment.â he explained. âI would have called my mom but.. shes going through so much right now. Sheâs taking care of Maggie and now Liv,â he paused, unsure if Oliver knew about pregnancy yet. âShe was taking care of my Aunt Katie not long ago when she had her baby. I think she just needs a break. She would freak out over this.â he let out a shaky breath and looked at him. âI just donât want her to see me like this. Maybe in a few days when Iâve healed a bit. Anyways, thanks for coming, Oliver. I didnât really know who else to call.â

Closed starter: @oliverxvalentineâÂ
Location: Fallbrook Hospital
Patrick had been told when he finally woke up several hours later that he had been kept in the hospital overnight due to having a minor concussion from the incident at the Barnyard. He also had been shown x-rays of his broken wrist, injured from the way he had landed on it when he was thrown to the ground, and his two fractured ribs. Other than that just a lot of scrapes and bruises, mostly to his face. The doctor told Patrick he was lucky the outcome wasnât worse. It had been strange waking up late in the afternoon the next day and not having his family by his side. In his family, no one who had to go to the hospital ever went alone or forgotten even if it was for something minor. But when asked by the doctor if he wanted to call them he remained firm that he didnât. Not when he knew how worked up his mother would get and right now she didnât need that. He couldnât call his sisters either because they wouldnât be able to keep it from her. He knew that his Aunt Katie was an option and would probably come without hesitation if he asked, but also knew that she had a baby to take care of. He had asked for his phone so he could go through his contacts. Darius was the first one who came to mind. Would he care enough to help him at a time like this? He really didnât want to risk it if the answer was no, as much as he longed to have someone who cared about him. As soon as he saw Oliverâs number, he felt a sense of relief and wondered why he hadnât thought of him sooner. He had always been close to him and Olivia and he knew that he would do anything for anyone in their family. He gave his number to the staff so they could call him and hopefully explain what happened better than he could. He stayed in bed while he waited, hoping Oliver would come and that he wasnât busy with work. All he needed was a ride home, really. He moved very slowly when he heard someone coming as even the slightest movement caused him pain.

finwalkerâ:â
Today had not been a good day for Finn. Between a shipment of furniture getting lost in transit and his mates back in London calling to tell him that the police were at his house looking for him, he just needed a drink. Or 12. He knew what it was about but he couldnât do anything about it. The money had been spent to purchase Maggieâs and heâd be damned if they got their hands on that place. He would make everything right again, he would. He just had to get Maggieâs off the ground first. He couldnât let anyone know that he failed at the one thing he was supposed to be good at. He was on his third drink, his head starting to feel a slight buzz as he listened and laughed at the karoake participants. Why he had chosen this place to unwind he couldnât say but here he sat regardless. âHuh? Oh no, nope. Nuh-uh. Not going to happen. Iâm nowhere close to drunk enough for that But you go have fun and Iâll be rooting for you.â Finn chuckled, not sure if he could handle much more of the ear bleeding the current singer was causing.Â
x
Patrick smiled at the man. âOh, come on. You canât sit here judging us and then not be willing to participate.â he teased. âI bet you could sing better than those people.â he motioned to the ones who were currently on stage. âAnd see thatâs a backwards way of looking at it. Most people think alcohol will give them more courage and make you a better singer, but it just makes you more likely to mess up the lyrics and embarrass yourself.â he pointed to his own drink. âThough, who am I to talk, when this is my third one?â he chuckled and took the empty seat across from the other and grabbed the booklet which contained the list of songs. âAlright, Iâll hold you to that. And maybe you can help me choose a song for me, then. I donât do Shania or Carrie Underwood.â he quickly added.

River looked at the guy he did not recognize, shaking his head âuhm, why me?â He said looking around at the people near them. He was waiting for Verity, they had plan to meet for drinks once she got off, and he wasnât up to the idea of karaoke. River could sing, he was once in a band back in New York but he hadnât sang in front of people since he got here to Fallbrook in five years. âI mean how do you know I can sing, and what made you think I wanted to?â
x
Although his intention was to make others feel included, he quickly remembered that sometimes when people were alone they didnât necessarily want attention. âI didnât. I just assumed that since this is a karaoke bar, and youâre here, that you probably have an interest in karaoke.â he explained. âAlthough I suppose to some people the bar aspect is more appealing, since we donât have very many to choose from in this town.â he shrugged before sipping his drink.Â

Olivia appreciated the fact that her family wanted to make her birthday a big deal. She really didnât need a party and all that, but it was a nice gesture so she was looking forward to having the Shrek themed party with all of the people she loved the most. Unfortunately, she was getting hit with a bout of morning sickness and wasnât eating as much as she would like to. She was about to sit down and take a breather when Patrick walked in and she couldnât help but let out a laugh when she saw his costume. âOh my god, you look amazing,â she laughed, hugging her brother and then pulling away to look at his costume again. âThank you Patrick, Iâm so happy youâre here.â
x
Patrick posed in his outfit âYou like it? Your kids sent me the tiktok of gay Pinocchio because he reminded them of me, and I couldnât resist.â he explained. âI know itâs not technically from Shrek but I think itâs better.â he set the gifts he brought her aside in the pile of other gifts. âWhere is everybody else?â he asked looking around before he looked at his sister. His smile faded as he noticed something was off about her. He had enough experience growing up to know how she looked when she was feeling sick. He placed a hand gently on her back. âLivy, are you not feeling well? Please tell me you didnât eat half the cake to yourself again. You know you canât have that much sugar.â

âYou are both equally handsome.â She laughed when he said he looked like her. âYou got your fatherâs big head though. That was hell to push out.â She saw lots of little things things in Patrick that reminded her of Malcom. âYou have his heart, his laugh.. the way the sun brings out your freckles.â She could go on. âYes. Thatâs exactly it, we 69ed all night long.â She countered right back. âHey! I am an excellent liar. Iâve got two tonyâs to prove it.â Olivia couldnât lie to save her life. âI canât help it. Heâs charming and Iâm pretty sure he was flirting back, But heâs also just lost his wife and is newly sober. What if he doesnât want me like that? Am I betraying your father, thinking about Nick like that?â She shook her head, her stomach all in knots admitting this. Malcom was the love of her life, but here was Nick, making her blush like she was sixteen again. âYou, naked in the bathtub as a baby.â She narrowed her eyes when he gave her hell for her photo skills. âIf Iâm so bad at it, teach me how then.â She held out her phone to him. âFine. Mature taste then.â She shrugged. âHoney, donât take this the wrong way but you need to get laid. A-sap. Being single is fine, but weird things happen when you ignore your ding dong.â Leanne was very adamant about sex. Plus, he needed to get his mind off Daris. âUh huh.â Leanne nodded, a ïżŒmischievous grin on her face as he went on about Brady. âI know. I was also shocked, Heâs sensitive guy and Maggie is so.. abrasive. I think he could be good for her, Iâm just worried sheâs going to break his heart. Your dadâs probably shaking his fist on the other side.â She shook her head. âIâm your mother. Itâs my job to be in your business.â She laughed before telling the truth. âI found your sisters bra on his couch when I was over the other day. You should have seen his face. I got him good.â She chocked on her bar when he mentioned Nickâs penis but quickly recovered. âIâll have room. Your father was girthy, really stretched all this out.â She pointed to her throat. âYou can borrow one of my plugs if you want. Get yourself ready for Oliver. He gives off over average.â
x
Patrick rolled his eyes at her comment about his head being big like his dadâs. âOnly because we had the most brains in the family.â he teased. He smiled a little. As much as he knew he looked like his mother and her side of the family it warmed his heart when people told Patrick that he reminded them of his dad. He gave a scoff. âI know thatâs a lie because you arenât that flexible anymore.â he stated. âThatâs not the same thing. Iâm your son. I can always tell when youâre lying.â He went into the kitchen helping himself to some chips someone had set in a bowl for snacks for the party and shrugged at her answer. âMaybe I need to send him a more recent bath tub picture. Since both of us are single, I canât promise I wonât try to swoop in, if you donât.â he said with a smile. He filled his mouth with chips and let out a sigh. âGood. Maybe itâll fall off and I wonât have to deal with men anymore.â he muttered. He listened with interest as she spoke about Brady and could hardly wait to tease Maggie about it later. He definitely didnât seem like her usual type. âShe would have that poor man pussy whipped in a month.â he commented. âHeâs not bad looking though. If he ever wore anything other than graphic tees with comic book characters on them.â Patrick couldnât help but judge his wardrobe a little. But he had seen how Brady was with his daughter and knew that he had a good heart. If they did become more than friends it might not be the worst thing that happened to her.
He winced at her description. âMom, I donât want to hear about dadâs chode. Itâs bad enough I had to see it when he would walk down the hall naked every time he forgot a towel. And thank god I didnât get his hairiness.â he added before cringing further. âGross. Since when are we the family that shares sex toys? And I donât think I need your help in that department.â He sighed as she went back to implying about Oliver. âHeâs probably a bottom, like most male dancers, so it wouldnât work. Besides, weâre just friends. That doesnât mean we have to date or anything else.â he repeated. âAnd stop trying to change the subject so that we donât have to talk about Nick, and his probably huge dick.â He gave a little gasp. âOh my god, thatâs what we can call him! Big dick Nick.â he laughed. âAnd lets hope for your sake that it still works.â he added. But he knew that the idea of dating again must have been hard for his mother. âAll dick jokes aside, though. I really do get the feeling that dad would be okay with you moving on at some point. Besides, he liked Nick. It could be worse, you could be banging Brady.â he joked, subtly throwing shade at his sister. Â

Patrick Self-Para (ft Sunny) ;Â
Takes place at the Barnyard, Friday night, April 22, 2022.
When Patrick found out that one of his old friends and dance partners Marcie was in town, he jumped at the chance to hang out with her. He had spent all of last weekend with his family, for the spring festival, Oliviaâs birthday and then of course, Easter. As much as he loved his family, he needed some time to be social outside of them and the people he only talked to at work. Marcie was only visiting for a couple days and had invited him to The Barnyard. It wouldnât have Patrickâs first choice because a country bar was definitely not his scene, but it had been so long since they hung out that he didnât care. Since he had known Marcie for years he knew that his sisters would have probably had fun if he invited them, but alcohol was out of the question for both of them right now for different reasons.Â
He didnât get as glammed up as he normally would for a night on the town, with his dress coats or fun shirts, maybe a bit of glitter in his face if he was feeling daring, as he knew this wasnât the right place for that. He decided to âdress downâ and ended up wearing his fatherâs old shirt which he had borrowed a few weeks ago from his motherâs house and âaccidentallyâ kept. It still had his smell and even though it wasnât his style, flannel and jeans seemed fitting for tonight. Marcie showed up in a similar outfit, but included a cowboy hat which made him smile. A couple of their other former dance friends ended up meeting them there as the night progressed. Patrick usually tried to drink somewhat responsibly when he did, and limited himself so that he did not become fall-down-black-out drunk or make a complete fool of himself. He had watched his mother recover from alcoholism more than once and was now watching his older sister do the same so none of that was appealing to him. However, he did usually feel lighter and more confident if he had more than two. That night he went against his better judgement when Marcie ordered a few rounds of shots. He reasoned he was in good company. The bar wasnât even that crowded and nothing bad could happen.
Drink after drink and dance after dance, Patrick began to feel like he could really enjoy himself for the first time in a very long time, without thinking about Darius or about work or his dad. But before long, they realized it was almost closing and all started to make plans to get home safely. Before they started to put on their jackets and make there way out, Patrick pulled Marcie onto the dance floor for one last dance. He couldnât help but notice something in her demeanor had changed as she looked at someone across the room. âWhatâs wrong?â he asked her taking her hands and she let out a sigh. âI think a guy I use to date is here.â she explained. âHeâs been stalking my instagram for years and probably saw the photos I posted earlier, so he knew I was here.â Patrickâs head turned to see a man who was definitely looking in their direction and getting strange vibes from him. If he was sober he might have done the reasonable thing and left with Marcie but the liquor in his system had him feeling more mischievous. âI got this, babe.â he twirled Marcie before pulling her back into his arms. She chuckled. âWhat are you doing Patrick?â she looked at him disapprovingly. âMaking him insanely jealous.â he responded putting his hands on her waist. She put a hand on his chest and rolled her eyes. âAre you sure thatâs going to work? You donât have a straight bone in your body.â she pointed out, to which he laughed and pulled her closer to plant a kiss on her neck. âYou forget that I was also an actor.â She smiled at him, wrapping her arms around his neck. âAlright. I just hope you know what youâre doing, cowboy.âÂ
When the song ended, Marcie pulled him by his hand towards the exit. He draped an arm around her shoulder so that it would appear to anyone there that they intended on leaving together. He felt like he had accomplished his mission in getting some creep who couldnât take no for an answer off of his friends back so that she could feel safe when they stepped outside, the rush of cold air touching their skin and the music winding down in their ears. Patrick was noticeably unsteady as he pulled out his phone to call for a cab. While he was distracted however, he was suddenly grabbed and thrown against the wall, undoubtedly by Marcieâs ex, but it took his brain a moment to process that only after he had struck Patrick several times in the face with his fist and threw him to the ground, where he proceeded to kick and punch him. It happened so fast he couldnât react. The sounds around him became warped and seemingly distant as he tried to protect his head with his arms. âGet up and fight me, asshole!â he heard him shout followed by Marcieâs voice. He was badly hurt at this point but his instinct was to protect his friend. He lifted his head slightly, his vision blurred from the blood that had ran into his eyes, but he could make out her frame, grabbing the manâs shirt to pull him back. âLeave him alone, you fucking idiot!â There was more yelling and the sound of sirens as the man dropped to his knees and cried out in pain after she had kicked him in the crotch.Â
Even in his intoxicated state, he started to feel pain all over his body as he laid on the cold ground bleeding. He saw lights flashing red and blue that reminded him of his momâs Christmas lights and then the next thing he knew people in uniforms were surrounding him. At first he thought they were cops, coming to arrest him but it became clear that they were there to help him when they started to ask him questions and roll him carefully onto a stretcher. He looked for Marcie as they loaded him into an ambulance but didnât see her. A vaguely familiar and reassuring voice was speaking to him. Patrick felt like his was slipping in and out, trying to fight to stay awake. It still hadnât really hit him what was happening until he touched his dadâs shirt and noticed it had been torn, the sleeve almost completely ripped off. It was just a small part of Malcolm, but it brought him comfort. He started to sob then as the same voice told him that he was going to be okay. âThey ruined my dadâs shirt.â he cried out. âOh. Well, Iâm sure heâll understand. Maybe you can get him a new one.â the confused voice answered. Patrick moved his eyes which had begun to swell but saw the a face he recognized. âHey...you live upstairs from me.â he managed to say. The paramedic broke his professional demeanor for a moment and smiled.Â
âYouâre right, I do. Small world. Iâm Sunny. Bit of a rough night, huh, neighbor?â Patrick had only seen the young man in passing in the building he lived in and might have briefly spoke once or twice. âYouâre a good man, Sunny.â he said in his incoherent state. It comforted him a little to see someone he knew even vaguely. Though truthfully the only person he wanted was his mother. When he was hurt or sick, it was as if he was five years old again, needing her comforting voice and touch. However, it occurred to him that if he was badly hurt, she wouldnât be able to handle it. Not with everything else going on. He didnât even want her to see him like this knowing how heart broken and stressed she would be. âHey, Sunny? Can you do me a favor?â he asked. âSure, man.â the other answered as he worked on checking Patrickâs vitals. âIf Iâm not awake when we get to the hospital...make sure they donât call my mom.â he said staring at the man. âShe canât find me like this, it would destroy her.â He could tell by Sunnyâs expression as he nodded that he was probably only trying to humor him to keep him calm. âOkay. Just try to relax. Weâre almost there.â Patrick continued to fight the pounding in his head and the pain that burned throughout his body with each breath he took, until he couldnât anymore. He lost consciousness at some point after the unloaded him and wheeled him through the halls, hoping that when he woke up this would all be a bad dream.Â
