West Los Angeles 1977

In 1977 I was renting an apartment in West Los Angeles with a surfer friend of mine. Every morning we would wake up before dawn and drive up to Malibu to go surfing. When we would get to the beach it was usually still dark but never once did I see the waves empty. No matter how early we got there, there was always somebody already out there in the dark surfing.

Surfers...

I can remember hitting the surf in the pre-dawn darkness diving headlong into the waves.

What a way to start the day.

I was doing a lot of pencil drawing back then. I drew on newsprint so most of the drawings have disintegrated with time. I did however manage to save this drawing. It was one of my favorites so I put it away in a folder and forgot about it for thirty odd years until I found it again. I just took this picture.

Brings back fond memories.

Last Train to New Street

As I explained a few post ago I played bass guitar in a reggae band back in the 80s.

Playing in a reggae band was a trip let me tell you. One night after we had rehearsed we were packing our gear out back and suddenly our amps got STOLEN!!

"Some guys stole your stuff!" someone yelled and pointed that-a-way. So we all hopped in two cars and headed out after the bandits.

Down the road someone yelled "There they are!" and sure enough there they were, a group of guys with our amps on their shoulders walking towards us across a vacant lot.

So we jumped out of our cars to confront them. No shit.

I swear it was just like a scene from West Side Story when the Jets confront the Sharks. Two gangs heading towards each other ready to RUMBLE!!!

Then, as if in some Clint Eastwood movie, three cop cars appeared out of nowhere and stormed onto the lot in a cloud of dust and six policemen jumped out of their cars and leveled their guns right at us. "Hands up!!!" they yelled.

A moment I shant forget.

Long story short we all put our hands up and after a few moments the cops got our stuff back to us, told us all to cool down and sent everyone on their way.

Later that night we all smoked a big spliff and cracked up. What a life.

Flash forward 40 years. Pedro, our riddim guitarist, is in Birmingham England cranking out tunes, and I'm on an Island in the Philippines drawing pictures and being a dad.

Where are the rest ot the guys?

Only Jah knows.

Pink and blue.

A few days ago, while scrolling, I saw an abstract painting that was pink and blue. And lovely. Being how scrolling is I completely forgot where I saw it, but those colors, pink and blue, have been on my mind since. It's an unlikely combination but lovely.

I've taken to rubbing the pigments into the paper with a soft white sock. The effect is lovely.
