RE: Mitski
Reacting to this is not as black and white as unconditional belief.
I'm a sexual assault survivor and I have a sibling who has breaks from reality/delusions that I know are categorically untrue, my sibling believes her fantasies with all her mind and heart until she is consistently medicated, in therapy and reattached to reality again.
I can see the grey in this story. How Amber's mental health and drug use could have effected her perception and connection to reality. She honestly displays the same patterns of behaviour as my sibling.
Amber is trying to debunk the idea that she's unwell despite multiple sources (old friends of hers and yes controversially family) with even more convoluted stories. Realistically the odds of her being in the middle of a conspiracy theory like the one she portrays are extremely slim. Even if she does believe it to be true Mitski has been confirmed to not be where Amber claimed she was during an assault and much of her story is mismatched with the facts.
In saying that, she should absolutely not be shunned for sharing her story! Nor should survivors be expected to remember every detail and date of their abuse! There needs to be an open and welcoming environment for sexual assault survivors but unconditional belief without reserve is not morally correct. It leads to invalid claims being associated with valid ones until survivors are all painted with the same suspicious brush. Sexual assault survivor stories should be welcomed and listened to unconditionally but it needs to looked at with kindness, understanding and conclusions drawn where possible.
I'm not saying this as a fan of Mitski, I was even more a fan of Melanie Martinez and I did not support her. The claims in her case were damning in my opinion.
I'm only coming out of years of blogging hibernation to say this because I'm seeing teens/young people with great intentions throwing blind support because they are afraid of being unkind and morally wrong. And how kind you've been guys! Listening to her and following her story but the world is not black and white, it's incredibly grey and these issues are far more complicated than what we can put on a feminist bumper sticker. It's OK if this sexual assault story doesn't make sense to you or you feel it may not be true. You can accept that's how you feel about it and leave Amber to find the resolution she's after. You don't have to 100% support her to be kind and wish her healing.

I do think that the cottagecore aesthetic appeals massively to lesbians in particular because it represents a longing that’s entrenched in our history as a community—I mean it’s just the latest iteration of something that lesbians have been dreaming about for centuries… In a biography of Edna Walling I’m currently reading, it is mentioned that nearly 100 years ago, in a 1921 article, the Australian magazine Woman’s World was reporting on a “trend” of single women (like Edna) who tried to live by themselves in a cottage in the country:
1920s Australian ‘bachelor women’ living in quaint mountain cottages on Spinster Crescent: a little-known chapter of lesbian history. ♥
And nearly 100 years before that, in 1836, Charlotte Brontë was writing to Ellen Nussey: “If we had but a cottage of our own I do think we might live and love on till Death without being dependent on any third person for happiness.”
The countryside cottage dream is such an ageless yearning for lesbians and it is political at the core, it’s a yearning to take matters in our own hands with regards to our social alienation, to escape from the hatred and live more freely; it’s a wish for separatism that doesn’t dare speak its name and is formulated and/or achieved in individual, quaint, innocuous ways so as not to stir up too much ire and incur repercussions from het society.
#the Dandenong ranges is where I live!!!#keeping the legacy alive bb!!!!!!!!!!!#gonna be doing some research into this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Maybe I’ve wanted you for all these years. I couldn’t call it by name before, but maybe it’s been there since I first knew you. I never felt that way about anybody but you. I’ve never loved a man. I never knew why before. Maybe it’s that.”

“I didn’t really know I was gay until I was in my twenties. I just experimented with boys and girls and had reason to adore them both. I think my first really serious relationship was a gay one, so that began to tell me things about myself,”

Kenyan ban on lesbian love story Rafiki is lifted
Shortly after the news that the film would premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival the film was banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board “due to its homosexual theme and clear intent to promote lesbianism in Kenya contrary to the law”.
Producer, writer and director Wanuri Kahiu successfully sued to have the ban lifted so that the film could be screened in Kenya and she would be eligible to submit her film for a Foreign Language Film Oscar. On September 21, 2018 judge Wilfrida Okwany ruled in Kahiu’s favour writing, “I am not convinced that Kenya is such a weak society that its moral foundation will be shaken by seeing such a film.”
The film will now be screened at some point in Kenya before the October 30th deadline for a minimum of 1 week to ensure Oscar eligibility.
Rafiki is the story of the teenage daughters of two warring politicians who fall in love with each other despite prejudice from their friends, family, and society at large. The film has U.S. distribution, but no official theatrical release date as of yet. It will be released in France on September 26, 2018 and in Norway on November 16, 2018

Quote
Not to say that my story is the same as Rosa’s at all. It’s not. But there were things that we wanted and thought would be really important — like the word itself: bisexual. To me, that’s an important word in my coming out. I know that not all people are totally celebratory of that word because it’s from a time where it was like these two genders — that’s all there is. And now there’s a lot more flexibility and fluidity in sexuality, which is why sometimes I gravitate toward the word queer as well. For me, bisexuality includes people that are trans, it can include people who identify in different kind of ways. But for Rosa, there was a point for her where she heard that word somewhere along the line and she saw herself in that word, so for her, it was important for her to identify in that way. I suggested that that word was really important to Rosa and that it also would be really important to the bi community to have that word said aloud on TV. Not just a suggestion that she dates girls now, but a clarity on this character: This is who I am, and I’d like you to know it — and accept it.
