ok im making a post about the thing

i wish the internet weren't so binary - i can see 100% how patti's comments stung and how they (accidentally) perpetuate stereotypes. i can understand how hearing them elicits a sort of heart-drop response. i can ALSO see that patti was referring to solely the volume of the speakers in the theatre. many people have said they could hear audio from hell's kitchen as they were in the audience for the roommate. the situation seems to have been handled with grace - a request was made (based on a suggestion from the stage manager) and fulfilled, to which patti sent flowers as a thank you. part of kecia lewis' criticism was that she only sent flowers after the issue was resolved... but, of course, right? have you ever sent flowers to someone as you're asking them for a favor? flowers are a thank you. i don't think patti would have even said anything publicly if it weren't for that fan at stagedoor. her comment was a diffusal of a situation, frankly. if i were her, i'd feel insulted if someone came up to my show asking me for an autograph when they didn't even watch me perform. chances are that fan was aiming to sell that playbill on ebay, which i'm sure patti clocked. rather than saying 'no' to their face, she diverted with a little nod. it was a poorly vague choice of words. kecia lewis is right when she points out how those words come across. she did make it extremely public and extremely accusatory, which i don't love, but it's her prerogative. my only hope is that people truly evaluate the entire situation and continue to support both of these talents :/

I’d like to address the accusations of racism against Patti LuPone. Patti’s always been known for her strong, sometimes overly blunt opinions. While I’m 100% against racism in any form, I really don’t think that’s what this is.

She was talking about the noise levels at Hell’s Kitchen - she found it too loud. That’s a valid critique, not a racial one. Patti has criticized tons of Broadway shows over the years - regardless of race. In the interview, the situation was brought up and she responded the way she always does - direct and unfiltered.

Patti has always supported the LGBT community and other minorities, and there’s never been any history of racist behavior from her.

Was it okay for her to call Kecia Lewis a “bitch” or question her Broadway experience? No, that was out of line. But I don’t think it had anything to do with race.

I get that people felt hurt, and those feelings are valid. But let’s take a breath. Patti would’ve said the same thing to anyone, regardless of race. Let’s not confuse harsh criticism with racial intent, especially without clear evidence.
