Does my film conform to Parental Guidance guidelines?
Dangerous Behaviour- I do showcase some quite dangerous behaviour, like falls from heights and weapons being thrown at characters. In my film these aspects are a bit glamorised, for example, the girl never sustains injuries from her falls. Regardless they are not shown as something that appear enjoyable or desirable.
Discrimination- There is no discrimination in my film
Drugs- I don’t show drugs
Language -characters don’t speak, hence no bad language is being used
Nudity -no
Sex - no
Threat and horror - the main character is in a dangerous situation, yet she manages to escape it. This is not prolonged
Violence  there is mild violence in sense that the bear gets hit by an apple.
I think my film could pass for PG guidelines, it has a health message, which is the purpose of dangerous behaviour. However, these dangerous behaviours are in fantasy setting, and would not offer same outcomes in real life

How to write a cover letter
Do your research
What does the company do?
Who are their competitors?
Who are their target audience?
What does the role involve?
What are the essential skills?
you’ll be able to make it clear in your cover letter how your skills and abilities match up with what the employer is looking for.
Formatting
Address: Person dealing with applications (hiring manager), this may be on the job ad or the company website, put effort into finding their name. (Dear Mr Smith/Dear Ms Jones’./‘Dear Sir/Madam’)
Structure:
Opening the letter – Why are you getting in touch?
Why you’re getting in touch, how you found the job, if someone referred you, mention them.
Second paragraph – Why are you suitable for the job?
Briefly describe your professional and academic qualifications that are relevant to the role and ensure you refer to each of the skills listed in the job description.
Third paragraph – What can you do for the company?
Outline your career goals (making it relevant to the position you’re applying for)
and expand on relevant points in your CV – including examples to back up your skills.
Fourth paragraph – Reiterate
Here’s where you reiterate your interest in the role and why you would be the right fit for the role. It’s also a good time to indicate you’d like to meet with the employer for an interview.
Closing the letter
Sign off your cover letter with ‘Yours sincerely’ (if you know the name of the hiring manager), or ‘Yours faithfully’ (if you don’t), followed by your name.

What is a cover letter?
What is a Cover Letter?
written for a specific job, it highlights certain areas you think would make you right for the role.
What should a cover letter include?
Here a few essential things you should aim to cover in your cover letter:
Your personal details (e.g. name, address, phone number)
The hiring manager’s name (if you have it)
Where you found the vacancy
Why you’re suitable for the job
What you can do for the company
Closing statements (including thanking the recruiter for their time)
What is a cover letter for?
the employer will learn more about you, your personality, what you actually want from the job and gain insight as to why you’re applying.
How should a cover letter be formatted?
show attention to detail to the employer:
Be clear and concise
Keep paragraphs short and direct
Back up any statements you make with facts & figures
Choose a professional font
Check spelling and grammar
Use a template
How long should a cover letter be?
Around half a page of A4 (one page maximum).
It should be a little more in-depth than your CV, but keep it punchy and to the point. Recruiters don’t want your life story.

Finding Work
Job Hunt
Where to Look:  The Dots, Design Jobs Board, TOB Jobs, If You Could, Indeed, LinkedIn, AIGA, The Loop (if you’re in Australia), Lecture in Progress, NUA Profile, social media.
Paperwork
Requirements: Most of the time, job applications (and sometimes, job enquiries) require a CV, cover letter and portfolio of work. Tailor your portfolio and CV to the Job requirements.
Cover letter: make it specific, research the company, explain why your skill set is perfect for them and why you were attracted to them. Think of writing cover letters and CVs as a design project – there’s a target audience that you’re communicating to, and the purpose is to sell yourself without sounding like everyone else, so tailor your words to that effect.
Job Interviews
Types:  job interviews can really vary; some will feel like informal chats, others will feel like presenting to a judging panel, be prepared for anything.
Prepare by:
• Practising interview questions  • Doing solid research on the company, brand or studio you’re interviewing with • Getting there with time to spare.
Questions
Employers might create and personalise questions depending on the values and expectations they have of you and the role. But these are common:
What attracted you to the role? • Can you tell us a bit about yourself? • What was the last thing you saw that really inspired you? • Where do you see yourself in three years’ time? • Can you tell us about a time you overcame a challenge in your work?
Questions you may not be prepared for:
• Sum yourself up in 3 emojis • What is your favourite place on the Internet? • What’s the wors thing you’ve ever made? 💩
Things to consider:
warning: If a pre-interview task takes longer than a day, the company may be out to exploit you.
Rejection: the job may not have been the right fit, and yo would not have been happy at the company.
Money isn’t everything: make sure that the company you join, is one you would enjoy working at.
Freelance Business Skills:
Business plan: Making decisions about copyright, licensing, accounting, pensions and more will mean you’re prepared for whatever might come up.
Pay Rates:  Kei Maye’s ebook Up The Ante, the AIGA’s advice on calculating a freelance rate,  Major Players salary report (for London Only) read around for different viewpoints.
Contracts and invoices:
Contract: outlines a set of guidelines. works on your behalf, outlining the exact duration of the project, the expected outcomes from both sides.  Advice on contracts can be found in Association of Illustrators website,  and article It’s Nice That project manager Josephine New.
Invoices: make it easy for people to pay you. Include:
• Your name • The client and project name • Your address, email and phone number • Invoice number (you create this) • The dates and hours you worked • Your bank details (including IBAN Number) • Your National Insurance number
Working for Free
Clients may try to squeeze out the maximum amount of free labour from the freelancer, so be careful.
Taxes
When doing freelance work at any capacity (even just on the side),  you need to register as self-employed (via gov.uk for the UK) so you can pay tax on your earnings.
Tax return:  When it comes to the end of the tax year you’ll need to fill in your tax return, which will determine how much you have to pay. This may also be in addition to any other contributions, such as student loan repayments or pension contributions, dependent on your country. In the UK, the tax year runs from April 6th to April 5th, and you’ll need to send in and pay your tax return before January 31st, so it’s a good idea to save some cash in advance to be able to pay for your taxes.
Often, freelancers will hire an accountant to help them with their tax return or managing money in general.
 HELP
If you’re stuck, help is available
grants and funding,
to self-employment assistance and jobseekers allowance.
The state (depending on what country you reside in) can assist you, and it will only be helpful to your future self to stay informed on what resources will be available to you once you graduate.

Advice on Networking
Having an online presence (e.g Instagram, LinkedIn)
Bio-  clearly sets out who you are and what you do.
Post the work you love- work you want to do more of, this will help attract dream commissions
Express your interests- attracts people that align with your interests.
Engage with other people’s work- share/ like/ leave comments, can help chatting with creatives about it and help other discover your taste.
How to reach out
Who?
Ask around- schoolmates, colleagues from your side job or uni alumni are all part of your professional sphere, they may know people who can help
Take note of what inspires you- e.g brand, company who you’d like to be involved with.
Find who’s behind it- look for them in Instagram tags, industry magazines, contact the person who shares your skill and interests
How?
Emails- short and clear, email people rather than places
If you don’t have their email address- connecting on social media, explain why you want their email address
What?
Be concise- get to the point quickly, have a clear punchy subject line
Be precise-Be specific about what you’re asking for, as this makes it easier for the person to reply, e.g., whether a company is running internships, if they ever hire emerging creatives, if they have any events you could come along to, or if they have five minutes to take a look at your work.
Make it personal- tell them if you liked their work or it inspired you
Networking IRL
Search for free events in the creative industry through e.g, Eventbrite and Meetup
BEFORE
be able to summarise what you’re interested in and what you’re looking for?
Ask yourself: What do I want? Is it a new job or advice? Or maybe you’re looking for someone to collaborate with?
Be clear and direct about how someone could help you.
be able to talk about your projects and interests, prepare to be able to talk about couple projects in your portfolio
DURING
Don’t make it all about your work- treat it more like socialising, chatting about common interests like travel, music and film can be great (and safe) ways to build a connection and make yourself more memorable. This can also help recognise your creativity
Listen- Make sure you listen properly, ask questions and think about how you might be able to help them.
Body language- try not to fold your arms, make eye contact
Use peoples names- use it to embed it in your memory
Quality over quantity- make meaningful connections
AFTER
Don’t stress about business cards- get person's details instead, and start a follow up conversation.
Social follow ups- if you don’t have their details, find them on social media, follow/ like their posts, say how nice it was to meet them.
Say thank you- thank them for their time, if they got in touch with you

Exploring my Art Style
I have put together screenshots of some of my animations to explore whether I can identify some patters in their design, that could help me build a website with design that supports my work
Tumblr media
Character Design- Generally all of these go for relatively naturalistic style, taking into account anatomy and naturalistic movement.
Environments- they are quite loose and sketchy, however they take into account perspective and generally try to establish a naturalistic world.
Colours - This is something that I have become more considerate over. They are very bright and bold. Quite few are within the red/blue spectrum, i like blending these.
Overall
My films do take inspiration from potentially

Yorkshire animation studios
Due to my ongoing jaw treatment Hull, I am considering on starting my animation career in Yorkshire, hence I compiled a few studios, I may request interning in. These all seem to be mixed media studios, they produce things in film, cg and 2d animation. Generally, on these websites 2d animation does not appear on the top of the list, except maybe for DIGIFISH and iNK BLOT FILMS, which haVE  entire pageS dedicated to animation. While websites such as Hungry Sandwich Club and Northforge, introduce animation as the second or third project in their portfolio.
There are some initial conclusions I can make from this search, these companies either don’t prioritise animation work, or lack people with these skills, hence they may be willing to look at my application.
A lot of the 2d films are also done in after effects, however, none of these companies really try to prioritise this medium as their main outlet, instead, at the top of their pages, they first promote more experimental works, which would mean that the work I am currently producing may be something they are interested in

Cupcake Story Reflection 07/04
Animatic- at this point, I feel like I have made the necessary adjustments, for the viewer to be able to follow the story. This has included ensuring, there is a  consistency in background colours, sizes of the characters, and that  there are no more missing shots.
I have also tried to make minor adjustments to the obvious tv trope, where the bear cannot destroy the girl with multiple hits, while the girls only hit is powerful enough  to destroy everything. This I have try to adjust by showing a close up of how the girls apple is much more powerful. It may not be satisfactory enough, but at this stage it is difficult to make major adjustments.
I don’t think I will be able to finish the animation in time, so I will focus on shots I would like to use for my showreel.
Backgrounds- generally I think I have made good progress with getting them completed, but I don’t really like them. This is because I could have used more research on dental decay to inspire their design, as opposed to mostly focusing on design participles such as colour.
I have a wide background, for where the bear jumps across the cupcake to attack the girl. It was originally intended to look like a circle perspective, however I wasn’t able to figure out how to approach it, so I had to compromise with a flatter looking design. I just hope the audience will not pick up on this mistake, because the pacing is quite fast.
Overall, my understanding of negative space and design language needs to be refined in general as the some of the compositions feel a bit cluttered

What causes fear of stairs?
-slipping or falling down e.g slippery steps/ handrails
-being mocked by someone for their manner of walking
-shortness of breath while climbing
-scary looking stair case e.g steep, open between the steps- imagine slipping through them.
-maybe weak stairs, look like they’ re going to fall apart
In boy’s case I am thinking that he may be afraid of:
-there isn’t a lot of choice for the footing, the hand placement has to be very precise on the rails, besides there’s a gigantic gap between them
-rail could be hot or slippery especially on a nice and sunny day that’s in the boy’s world, where his hands may become sweaty
-he may also be self conscious and it may be stressful for him to hit each step, especially if he doesn’t understand why it has to be done.

How have ‘being different’ has helped people change the world?
Here, I am exploring how being neurodiverse can help to see the world in a different light and therefore impact it for the better. This is to determine how the boy would interact with his world that may seem strange to others but is better for everyone in the long run.
Charles Darwin -Theory of Evolution
He had autism which supported him in his goals because it allowed:
- the capacity to hyper focus,
-the extra capacity for persistence- the enormous ability to see detail that other people missed,
-the endless energy for a lifetime dedication to a narrow task,
-and the independence of mind so critical to original research.
Steve Jobs - The IPhone
- dyslexic thinkers can portray the world through images because they think in images.
-they can build worlds, freeze the frame, walk around and touch.
-they can read people's faces, drawings, buildings, landscapes and all things in the visual world more quickly than many  non-dyslexic people.
Albert Einstein- Relativity Theory
Autism
His research was born out of an almost otherworldly ability to imagine and conceptualize the abstract. Who else could’ve presented the concept that light from stars bent around the gravitational pull of massive objects … or that space-time is like a fabric that could be folded and manipulated.
Stephen Hawking
“My disabilities have not been a significant handicap in my field, which is theoretical physics,” he wrote in Science Digest in 1984. “Indeed, they have helped me in a way by shielding me from lecturing and administrative work that I would otherwise have been involved in.”
In an interview with The Times, Gurza said using a wheelchair gives you a unique perspective on the world, and that it’s possible Hawking wouldn’t have come up with the theories he did if he hadn’t had a disability.
6. GEERAT VERMEIJ
Paleontology would be poorer if not for the contributions of Vermeij, a renowned expert on the history of life whose research has led to better understanding of how fossils once interacted with the world at large. Vermeij’s inspection of relics is by tactile feel: diagnosed with glaucoma as a child and blind since age 3, Vermeij has had to rely on other senses to continue his work. Because he cannot lean on his sight, colleagues have said that Vermeij has singular insight into evolution, absorbing detail of layers and shapes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
What I can conclude?
Having a disability may present an advantage of having a new perspective on the world that others may not notice. Some advantages that the boy may have is that he can spot things on the ground a lot quicker, this could potentially cause him to be come interested in being environmentally conscious. It may also help him notice smaller animals to explore; or alternatively develop a better understanding of people’s body language since faces are not something he sees first. It may also help him revolutionise how roads and paths are built so to perhaps make them more durable to damage or alternatively have them not heat up in warm days, as he has to walk on his hands that are naturally more sensitive than feet.

What keeps teeth in good health?
I felt like I needed a clash between the apple and one of the bear’s weapons (candy) in close up to show  exactly how the apple destroys the candy. This is partially because I felt the story was otherwise constructed of repetitive activity and also it gave no explanation as to why the girl’s throw was a lot more powerful than the bear’s.
Here are a bunch of ways cavities can be reduced:
-Salvia is calcium-rich  and it  dilutes erosive agents, rinses out your mouth and neutralises the acidic effect on your teeth.
- Brush, Rinse and Floss twice daily. Rinsing with a mouthwash in addition to water will help kill the bacteria in your mouth as well as restore the ph balance to a healthier starting place.
- Eating an apple can help clean your teeth until you brush and floss. Avoid apple juices because of the added sugar which can cause tooth decay, but enjoying a fresh apple can stimulate your gums and reduce cavity- causing bacteria to build up in your mouth.  Apples, which we like to call nature’s toothbrush, are a good snack because they are fibrous.
-. The nutrients found in dark leafy vegetables like spinach and lettuce contain high amounts of magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, calcium and magnesium. Because phosphorous is stored in the teeth (your bones), these minerals are instrumental in helping your body maintain balance.
- Munching on carrots and celery is a great way to keep your teeth healthy. When you chew foods that are crunchy and high in fiber, your mouth has to work overtime which stimulates the gums. These foods have beta-carotene in them, which your body needs to create vitamin A.
What can I use for the project?
I should focus on how the apple potentially dilutes and breaks apart the weapon/ washes it away with its juice or something. alternatively I should explore its fibrous nature as something like a sand paper dissolving the weapon.

Generally, I feel that I tend to handle pre-production and production roles relatively well. For me this means, drawing and iteration side of things. Meanwhile, my research could definitely be improved, especially regarding the themes and topics of the stories.
Specialism:
2D Animaton- this year, I have improved my animations in terms of exaggeration, consistency of form, animating in perspective, posing, character development and performance ( although there is still room to improve)
Skills I am okay at:
Storytelling(?) - this year, I feel like I managed to effectively come up with concise, generally easy to read stories. Although, as mentioned before more research is needed in future for stories.
Layout and Background(?)- In both projects, I had an opportunity to both create backgrounds and also the concept art for them. Some  of them showed my experience in dealing with perspective. They also demonstrate my ability to apply principles of  shape language, colour and observation. Regardless, these skills could still be developed further.
Character Design (?) My character design this year demonstrates, not so much powerful design, but more so shape language that is simple to animate. Although I probably, can’t claim I am good at it. A personal project I did over the summer, has  a character design of a lion that has been intensely studied, in terms of anatomy and shape language, regardless I never got to finishing it. Realistically I probably won’t have the time to finish this project in time for portfolio submission, but it may be worth discussing with the tutors if there is a place I can find for it in my portfolio.
Concept Art(?) - I managed to do a lot of iterations of the concept art in my fable project, regardless this may need to be stretched further
Skills to SERIOUSLY  improve on:
Editing
Rigging- I finally had a go at rigging in after effects, it wasn’t entirely terrible, regardless Briana outlined potential improvements, such as rigging each limb separately.
Compositing- I don’t know much beyond how to apply some generic filters. I am hoping that with Daniel Gies tutorials I would be able to learn a little bit more about lighting.
Animatics (?) I tend to default animate things, which creates extra work for me, also I never quite outline different values in the animatic, thus not helping the characters to stand out
Research- in both projects, this year, I used my own personal experiences to inform my stories and themes more than any scientific research. In Upside down boy, the only real character research that I did was observe Kieran, and let that inform my performance and actions of the characters. This offered me quite limited set of results.
Goals for the Website:
Layout: I want to set everything up on one page and let menu buttons help guide the visitor
Logo: simple but animated, something that works well with the showreel intro and outro
Colours: explore what colour scheme belongs in my this years films, I may potentially lean towards something neutral and light. Dark colours really don’t belong with the more children’s themed animations
Design- I could potentially try doing some background sketches/ design a custom menu bar that fits well with my sketchy style, thus also helping to unite the work I have in my reel. However, this could be an issue since I am makinng two very different looking animations this year.
Showreel: work I could include
Fable
Upside Down Boy
Crow and the Pitcher
Maybe a little bit of bestiary?
Potentially character performance?
Keywords I could use in my description:
Norwich University of the Arts, graduate 2D animator, visual-storytelling, BA Animation, 2020,Latvian (?),  freelance, creative, After Effects, TV Paint, character animation, children’s animation, design, final degree films, experimentation, drawing, iteration.
