Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl! The OG posts were lost with the hacking of my original Twitter account (@/bagels_donuts) but I’ve since reuploaded the whole thread to my new Twitter (@/ItsDonutsFR)! Breaking my silence to say that I need everyone reading Fairy Oak because I’ve needed fanfics for more than ten years and the lack of fanwork should be illegal. Honestly these series are just soooo good, I don’t understand how they’re not popular everywhere THEY HAVE EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. Such a whimsical magic little town with such a great world building and the people and the story everything is just so good. I’ve been wanting to live in fairy oak since i was a kid and the closer i would ever get is through fanfics and fanart but there is almost nothing 😭😭😭 I’m serious go read them, they are beautiful and written with such care 🥰🌱🌸✨

So! In looking for more resources on Black hair, I found this amazing, simplified explanation for afros, locs, braids, and twists!! Everyone thank "Daisy E" for their contribution to diversity and inclusion within the art space!

It's far past time to draw our Black characters with our hairstyles and natural hair textures. Please take the time to look, and practice!

when parting braids, would it be possible to part them in an artistic way so the parting makes a curvy artistic style on the scalp? how hard would it be to do that? would it mess with the lumpiness/consistency of the braid?

Yes. It's actually integral to African and Black American history and culture; our ability to use our hair for more than just artistry, but to send messages and maps and save rice and seeds for escaping slavery. White women were so jealous of our hair, believing it would "lead white men to sin", that we had to cover it even!

There are entire competitions on Black hair styles and what we can do with our hair, so the options are limitless!

As for how hard it would be to do, I don't know. I'm not a Black braider or a hairstylist, it's not like I can speak on the true skills of how to braid hair more than generally. Again, Black hair is an art, and a honed skill!! But if you're with a professional who knows what they're doing, I'm sure your scalp and the texture of the braids would be just fine.

Miracle x Magical: They literally cannot be ‘magical’ without holding hands 🥺 / It’s canon they literally kiss in the manga (yes, it was to break a spell but after Liko pulls Mirai closer, the romantic implication is pretty clear, and I believe one of the promo images for Mirai Days features them looking longly into each others eyes as they hold each other close with Mofurun looking up at them like “yep, these bitches gay”

Do you (or anyone else) have any tips for drawing flatter noses specifically at different angles? I’m confident with drawing face on and side profiles, but I feel like I can never get the perspective right with a head that’s slightly tilted or angled up, and a lot of the tutorials online are either just for the head base or are for pointed noses.

My only suggestion here is to study real world pictures of Black people in those poses until you get familiar. But I am not a phenomenal artist with efficient technique, SO I shall leave the floor open for folks better than I to help!

... You may have made me want to get into Monster High a little. I was never a doll kinda person, but some of the MH designs are really appealing. Which are your favourites?

*shoves the reboot off of a cliff* 

Oh, anon! Oh anon! You have given me a gift! Oh, I could talk about – G1 – Monster High and the character designs for hours! 

And I personally didn’t even actively collect the dolls. The only ‘High’ (Monster High and the ill-fated fantasy spin-off Ever After High) dolls that I own are an ‘Art Class’ Abbey Bominable and the ComicCon Collector’s Edition Cerise Wolf. 

But my overall favorite designs from Monster High are as follows:

Abbey Bominable, the daughter of the Abominable Snowman

Clawdia Wolf, a werewolf writer (doesn’t take two guesses to figure out why I loved this character despite the movie she appeared in being AWFUL…)

I also loved what they did with her since, being a writer, she moved to the series’ equivalent of England (Londoom) to study. So she was literally an American Werewolf in London.

Avea Trotter, one of the ‘Hybrid Monsters’ introduced during the Freaky Fusion movie/campaign. She’s the daughter of a centaur and a harpy.

Honey Swamp. God, her hair is to DIE for. She’s the daughter of a swamp monster from Boo Orleans. 

… Yeah, when it comes to the locations in the Monster High franchise, they’re all puns.

Casta Fierce. This design, that name! 

Kiyomi Haunterly, the daughter of the Noppera-Bo, or ‘faceless ghosts’, of Japanese mythology.

Isi Dawndancer, an exchange student introduced during the Monster Exchange program. She’s a deer-spirit from… *sigh* Boo Hexico…

Operetta! G1 Operetta was a fucking QUEEN in regards to her design and I will not hear otherwise! She’s the daughter of the Phantom of the Opera who’s going through a bit of a Rockabilly counterculture phase.

Marisol Coxi, another Monster Exchange foreign-exchange student. She’s the daughter of the Maricoxi, a sort of South American (’South Scaremerica’ in MH canon) version of Bigfoot from Monster Picchu (PUNS!!). There was a bit of a kerfluffle with this character’s design when her doll launched because, I shit you not, people didn’t like how big her feet were. 

Despite the fact that her whole character motif is being proud of her extravagant height, hair, and feet as well as the fact that SHE’S LITERALLY A SOUTH AMERICAN BIGFOOT!

Neightan Rot, another hybrid monster. He’s the son of a zombie and a unicorn and he is gay, Mattel, you are not going to lie to me and tell me this boy wasn’t gay, MATTEL!!!

Vandalla Doubloons, who I believe was the daughter of the Flying Dutchman.

River Styxx (GET IT?!), the daughter of the Grim Reaper who was one of the Monster High franchise’s 3 or so answers to characters like MLP: FiM’s Pinkie Pie in regards to her personality. 

In the movie she appeared in, Haunted, she had even fitted her father’s spectral boat with party cannons.

Gooliope Jellington, a 15-foot slimegirl created in a lab to be a circus performer. Introduced during the circus-themed Freak du Chic campaign. Interesting tidbit about her (dollwise): her doll, to keep the theming of her character, was 2-3 times as tall as any of the other Monster High ghoul characters.

Honestly, though, if you have Netflix the best way to experience Monster High is through the movies. I would say through the G1 webisodes as well, but the official Monster High YouTube channel is so chock-full of spam reuploads of crappy stuff from the remake that I wouldn’t send anyone to sift through that mess. 

If anyone is interested, I can post a guide of what movies are worth watching in response to another ask. This post got pretty long – Oh GOD, I JUST REMEMBERED THAT ALL OF THESE EPIC DESIGNS GOT RETCONNED INTO THE ABYSS THANKS TO THE SHITTY FUCKING REBOOT..!!!

There was a beautiful era in the 90s/early 00s of fun, female lead teen movies that just hit different, were like this golden age of girls just being girls and celebrating that feeling, and no matter how Hollywood tries they will never replicate it.

I'm talking "She's the Man," "Bend it Like Beckham" "Princess Dairies" "St. Trinian's" "What a Girl Wants" "Clueless" "Uptown Girls" "John Tucker Must Die" "DEBS".....obviously there's probably a few I missed but you get the idea. Maybe the stakes weren't as high as saving the entire world, but they were important to the characters and had friendships and silliness and the goal was almost never to get the guy and you just don't get to see that anymore. Also almost all of them had banging soundtracks.
