In his early childhood, Darry was “Junior”

Once he got to high school, everybody called him “DJ”

It was only when the cops knocked on the Curtis family door that day in January and addressed him as Darrel did he start going by that. Because that’s what he was, he was an adult now, there was no room for silly nicknames anymore. It was only when he was addressed as “Darrel Curtis” and he went to correct them but stopped himself. There was no need for the “Jr.” anymore, as there was no Darrel Curtis Sr. Now.

Darry was no longer the mini-me of his father, he was his father. Taking the place and name of the person he once aspired to be like. Now he had to be like that, always.

It was only when Pony called him “Dad” in his fevered delirium in the week after Windrixville that Darry started to cry.

Do you think any of the gang would be good (or at least decent lol) singers?

I love this question, I’m gonna go through each of them and tell you my singing headcanons

Ponyboy - beautiful voice, but doesn’t like to show off. He was in choir in elementary/middle school and always got solos, but he doesn’t like singing that much (not like he dislikes it, it’s just not his thing) so he stopped when he reached high school. Hums to himself all the time though

Darry - okay voice, not great but not awful. Doesn’t sing a lot, only to himself softly when he’s alone or occasionally if there’s a song on the radio he likes

Soda - best voice in the gang. Sings all the time, mostly to himself, but he does like the attention it brings him. His parents kept trying to get him to join choir but he just wasn’t interested

Johnny - nice voice but really soft. Was in choir with ponyboy but despite having a good voice he never got solos because he was too shy to audition and he’s also insecure about his voice, doesn’t think it’s as good as people say

Dallas - surprisingly good voice. Only sings when he’s drunk, never other than that because he doesn’t think it’s “tough”

Steve - horrible voice and knows it, purposely plays it up being bad so people just think he’s being bad on purpose, but even when he tries he’s out of tune all the time. Doesn’t sing a lot because of it

Two-Bit - horrible voice and doesn’t know it. Constantly singing very loudly and very off-key. He doesn’t care though, he has fun and that’s all that matters. No one says anything to him either because they don’t want to burst his bubble
