Choosing the Right Size of Dog House
When purchasing a house, a lot of important features may be required for consideration, such as the size of the house to buy, the quality of construction, and upgrading features. These same factors apply when purchasing a dog house.
The size is crucial because the dog might end up not fitting comfortably in a rather expensive and quality home. It is important to measure the size of the dog using a tape measure before going shopping. This assists you to ensure the height, length, and widths are accurate. The measurement is not only for the dog but also the space that it occupies as well. Take the measurements when the pet is resting.
For puppies, it is critical to estimate the size it will acquire at maturity. If you are not sure about the adult size of the pet, it may entail some search on the breed. Ask dog specialists such as a local veterinarian or searching the internet for the breeds, so as to find out their full length. For example, the American Kennel Association can be an excellent resource for information on dog house sizes. You can also consult other owners who have the same breed.
Dog houses come in ranges of sizes. However, it might still hard to buy one for larger dogs. This may require the owner to consider customizing to be able to cater for its other special needs such as stretching and small movements or walks.
On the other hand, it can also be tough to buy houses for smaller dogs because the sizes of the houses may not be available. The average sized house might be too big for the little dog. One might purchase it only to realize that it is way too big for the pet. Such a house is not adequate for the dog since just like the human home it can be tough to warm especially during cold weather.
A small dog house is easier to keep warm by use of the pet's body heat and the bedding or straw. Thus proper sizing for dog houses is necessary.
Another important thing to do is have a quality house as opposed to spending a lot of money on improper housing. The quality is at all times worth the efforts and time that one inputs.
A real pet house will include a good constructed floor and rooms for the puppies, their food and water bowls, just as a personal house would have various places. It must also have a same good mechanism for cooling and heating by the climatic conditions.
Today, most houses will be equipped with special heating and air conditioning units manufactured especially for dog and cat houses. These are houses that can be ordered through the net.
One of the main determining factors for acquiring something is the budget. An excellent buyer will try to stick to their budget regardless of what is offered in the market. Arguably, budget and affordability are some of the critical factors for purchase, but they should not be the only primary consideration in decision-making.
You can buy a cheaper house but deteriorate fast and fall-off easily thus you end up spending more. It is important to spend wisely for a high-quality home. Well-insulated pet home is an investment that will pay off in the long-term. It is more important to make wise decisions over necessary purchases for better and satisfying outcome.

What Is an Underground Dog House?
The name pretty much says it all. An underground dog house is a house for your dog that you build outside of your home at least 3 to 4 feet below the ground. Many call it dog den too.
An underground dog house is made for two reasons. The reason behind thinking about a dog house is because you do not want to keep your dog inside which is fine. Now, you do not want your dog to get affected from heat when it is staying outside. At the same time, you do not want your dog to face cold wind on winter either. These are the two reasons that why underground dog houses are becoming more and more popular.
You got nothing to worry when the earth itself works as an insulator and wind protector, right? That’s exactly what you get with a properly built underground dog house.
How Do I Build an Underground Dog House?
In theory, the process of building an underground dog house is a lot like building a basement parking lot for your home. Obviously, you do not need to dig a hole that big when it is only a dog house, but the chance is very less likely that you can do it on your own.
To build an underground dog house, you first will have to dig a whole which goes at least 4 feet deep into the ground. This is important because you want to give your dog as much room as possible. Apart from the depth, the width should also be big enough so that your dog feels comfortable inside. The width will always vary depending on your dog’s size but always try to keep as much extra space as possible.
Now, in an ideal scenario, there will be a stair at the top of the surface area which will go down to the underground dog house door. There should be a door which is easy to open. Do not lock the door in a way so that you have to look for keys in times of emergency. The door will be used as an entrance and exit point for your dog. If you don’t want to go inside the dog house yourself then make sure that the door is not super big.
Whenever you are building an underground dog house, you should remember that the dog house should have a downward slope towards the entrance so that nothing wrong happens if there is rain or flood. Only tell the workers when they are digging for the dog house, and they will know what to do to make it happen.
Always keep enough vents at all the walls and the top of the underground dog house. This is important because you are building this house for both summer and winter. The vents will allow you to control the weather inside on your own. For example, if it is a hot day, you can remove all the vents to make your dog comfortable and vice-versa.
One good idea is to use an easy to use flap on the door so that your dog doesn’t face any problem in going in and out of the house in case if you do not want to lock it. Many use this strategy, and it works fine.
If you do not want to do the whole thing on your own, there are readily made fences that you can buy from places like Amazon to prepare your dog den. This will be cheap and efficient. However, you will get limited regarding the size of the dog house and the material of the frames. If that’s not a problem for you, then it is a good idea to go for a ready-made unit just to escape from the hassle.
Why Should I Build an Underground Dog House?
This is a good question, and we feel, it needs to be answered. If you do not know the reason behind going for something, you will not be able to go at it with full forces.
The main reason that why people go for underground dog house is natural temperature control. Whether it extreme hot outside or very cold, your dog will have a decent atmosphere inside. It is a lot cheaper than setting up a real thermostat in your dog house if you think about it.
Another reason that why people go for underground dog house is the safety of your dog. If you live in an area where there are dangerous predators out there, it won’t be safe to have a regular dog house in your yard. When you have an underground den for your dog with doors and fences around, it is a lot safe if you think about it.
Before we end, you should also know about some of the disadvantages of going for a dog house so that you don’t regret later. If you are not careful about the ventilation, your dog might have to suffer for lack of oxygen inside. Ventilation is a key part of making sure that the dog house is properly maintained because, without proper air movement, the house will get damp too.
Also, cleaning might be another problem. Cleaning a regular dog house itself is a tough task. Now think about the same work 5 feet under the ground. It gets even more challenging as you do not have the option to go inside. You have to perform the whole cleaning process from outside the dog house.
Keeping everything in consideration, building an underground dog house is a good idea. At the end of the day, it helps your dog live a comfortable life which is more important than anything else. Keeping your dog indoor is a good option but if you do not have the luxury to do that, keeping your dog in an underground house is better than a traditional dog house.

Ways To Insulate A Dog House
It's estimated that 44% of all U.S. households own a dog. (Although if we're honest, most of those dogs own their houses.)
Some of those dogs have an owner that stays with them all day while others are taken to daycare. Some dogs though are left out in the backyard until their person returns home from work.
It's critical that any dogs who spend a good deal of time outside have adequate shelter from the elements. Ideally, they would have an insulated dog house.
Let's go through 7 ways that you can create an insulated dog house for your furry best friend.
Before that though, you've got to make sure that, just like you and your dog, your pet and their house are a perfect match.
Room to Move
I know it's tempting to get him the biggest house you can afford, but unless he's planning an epic house party, he doesn't need all that space. Besides, a smaller house is easier to keep warm. They'll have their body heat to maintain the place nice and toasty.
Now that you have a dog house, how can you keep it warm?
Get It Off the Ground
You don't need to install Pergo flooring in the dog house but getting the house off the ground will remove the radiant cold that can rise. It will also help keep the interior dry.
The easiest thing to do may be to grab a couple of wooden pallets. There is a home improvement store near us that puts unneeded pallets out for people to take.
If you can't curb shop like this, just ask a store manager. You'll want one pallet for your base. From the second pallet, take the pieces of wood off and use them to fill in the open spaces on your base pallet.
Take this base to the area where the dog house will go and then level it into the ground. You'll put the doghouse on top and re-level things.
You'll also need to affix the house to the base. If you don't your dog will start fighting an itch and wind up knocking his home over.
Note: don't affix the house just yet though. You may need to get access to the insides depending on what other steps you take to keep your pup comfy and cozy on a chilly night.
Say Goodbye to Cracks
Like any house, your dog house undoubtedly has some cracks or areas where the wood doesn't fit together correctly. In these cases get some exterior caulk or weather sealer and close those cracks down to ensure a dry, wind free interior in your insulated dog house.
See Who's At the Door
You don't need to be too fancy about this, but a door will keep the elements out and heat inside. Use a piece of thick vinyl as that will work to contain heat/cold from exiting/entering but also be easy enough for your dog to get through.
Comfort in an Insulated Dog House
You want your pooch to be comfortable and warm. Remember that pallet we started this insulated dog house project with? How could you forget?
Well adding a covering to that can increase comfort and warmth. Straw is a popular choice while some people drag the old baby crib from the basement and use that.
It's a great addition, but you'll have to be sure it fits. If you are crafty and can sew a mattress filled with batting awesome but if that's not your thing, there are other options.
Like an egg crate mattress. These are relatively inexpensive and can be cut to fit.
"It's Electric"
Do you have a heating pad on your bed for those chilly nights? Ever considered putting one outside?
There are some heating pads that are available in pet stores what are rated for use in dog houses and kennels. They're a great option to keep your pet safe and warm.
Cover It
It's the most common advice we give to people going out in the cold - "Dress in layers." Why not transfer that information to your dog's house?
If there is a particularly rough patch of weather coming through, consider adding a covering to your dog's house. Some tarps across the roof can help keep heat from filtering through the ceiling too quickly.
Insulation
Of course, the best way to create an insulated dog house is to add insulation. It's a relatively easy process (with a little planning).
First, you'll need to measure the dimensions of your dog house. Don't forget the roof.
With those numbers in hand, it's time to find the insulation that will work best for your situation. Some people prefer rolled insulation because it's easy to handle and relatively easy to install.
Others suggest styrofoam or polystyrene foam. These are lightweight materials that you can buy in sheets and then cut to fit.
When installing your chosen insulation, you'll have to make a choice - affix it directly to the interior walls or remove the wall paneling and place it between the interior and exterior walls. The right answer?
Well, there isn't one. At least not an absolute right answer.
You'll need to do what you feel most comfortable doing. Take into account your dog though.
Are they a chewer? Do they like to destroy?
If yes is your answer to both questions, then making the installation between the walls may be the smartest, and safest, option. You don't want to put your canine in any danger because the ate something that was in place to keep them safe but when ingested could prove fatal.
And there you have it, an insulated dog house! You no longer have to worry if your dog is safe and warm on those chilly nights. Both of you will rest easy now in the comfort and warmth of your homes.
If you have any questions on creating an insulated dog house, you're welcome to post it in the comments section below!

From the Big House to the Dog House - Finding the Right Home for Your Dog
Finding the right dog house can be difficult. Sometimes it is difficult for dog owners to predict the actual size of their puppy until it matures into an adult dog. When this finally happens, most dog owners will realize that the house isn't big enough to fit the entire family and the family pet, or pets.
Breed of your dog
Of course, if the actual dog breed is already known, then it is easy to figure out when is the right time for the family pets to move outdoors into their home. It is probably the best thing to do for your dog anyway since he will be getting plenty of fresh air and yard space to run around and exercise in.
So, where do you begin when it is time to move your dog outdoors? Here are some important facts to consider when looking into buying a dog house.
Size of Dog House
The first thing that needs to be taken into consideration when it comes to shopping for a doghouse is size. How big is your dog, and will he need more room to grow in the future? Also, how many dogs do you have? It's only common sense that if there is more than one dog, or if you plan to breed more dogs, that you will need a very sizeable dog house to avoid any cramping living conditions.
Budget
Next thing to consider is your budget price- do you have a limited budget to work with. If so, how much time do you have to work with before you need to move your dog outdoors, and what type of doghouses falls within your range of affordability?
Material
There are many different styles and options for doghouses, and really, it's all about what you're comfortable in purchasing as well as your dog's comfort. Doghouses usually range from traditional wood doghouses, to wire fenced kennels. Other types of doghouse include- plastic, metal, tents, fiberglass, inflatable, etc.
Again, what you want to pay attention is construction, material and weather durability, and comfort. If you're not too concerned about the looks appeal factor of the doghouse, then you are one-step closer to making your final purchase.
Environment
Lastly, what are the environment and weather conditions like in your area? Does it rain frequently, or is your location in a desert type of climate? Also, is your town or city prone to certain weather conditions such as- floods, hurricanes, or earthquakes?
Making sure that your doghouse has a strong and stable foundation, base, and structure is a key element in selecting an appropriate doghouse. If your property is located within a flood zone or area, be sure that the doghouse will have all of the right supports to keep your pets safe and clear of any flood waters.

Modern Dog Houses
Today's dogs are more than spoiled in many different ways. They have gone from a free farm animal to the indoor, man's best friend, pampered pets of today. While some people still have dog houses outside, others keep their pals indoors for more comfort and quality time with their pets.
There are now however also the alternatives which include a "doggy room," "indoor doggy cabin," and many other options that add the dog house to the residence or inside the home. This can be and expensive alternative to the original outdoor dog houses that we think of when we think of a dog house, however, the traditional dog houses are also beginning to transform.
As people become more attached to their pets and start to pamper them, it is becoming more common to see modern dog houses that are included in many different ways. One way is to take a spin and add things such as central heating for dog house, cold water dispenser, messaging bed, doggy TV, and even their personal pool.
Another way is to create a house inside your house that includes many amenities that we have in our homes, only that it is inside our home and brings our dogs closer to us, for a spin on an indoor dog. Another form of a luxurious dog house is actually to add a room onto the house, but to make it "dog sized" and include things like a bed, and television.
For expensive dog houses, the outdoor house has become more like a guest cottage than a dog house. People are adding central heat and air, television, pools, messaging beds, automatic food dispensers, automatic opening doors, and many other things that add the overall price and comfort of the house.
Other people are adding the best dog houses to the inside of their homes, and yet others are adding onto their homes to give their little pals a place to live. The price continues to go up and is around the same price as a home remodel. Some people have even gone as far as to add an upstairs exercise room to their dog houses.
It stands to reason that as long as people have money to spend, and love their pets, they will continue to find new ways to pamper their pets and new things to spend money on. From designer clothes to spa visits, and private pools and chefs we will continue to treat our pets just as we love to be treated, in style and comfort.
These houses show contemporary style with some charm that can add to your home or even look just like a tiny version of your home. You can take these little homes and add things like central heating and air and many other comfort items to them.

5 Tips For Building A Dog House
Are you interested in building a dog house for your best friend? Here are some easy tips to think about when considering the type of shelter you want to provide for your dog.
Proper Size
The first thing you need to think about is how big you want your new shelter to be. The house needs to be big enough to accommodate the size of your dog. We as humans are comfortable with about 2 feet of air above us in a room. This allows us to not feel claustrophobic. Your dog will most likely enjoy this same comfort in his new environment too.
In order to determine how much room your dog will need you will simply need to measure him. You want to measure him while he is standing up, sitting down, and also measure him while he is stretched out and relaxing.
He needs to be able to see out the front of the house both while sitting and while standing. If the entrance is not high enough, your dog will have to lower his shoulders and may even scrape his belly. Be sure to measure the width of the widest point of his shoulders.
Elevation
When building the dog house, you want to make sure that it is raised several inches from the ground. This allows air and water to flow underneath the house. You also want to make sure to ventilate well by putting holes underneath the eaves of the dog house. Make them small, about the size of a nickel.
Wind Blocker
If you live in an area that is prone to high winds and extremely cold weather, consider installing a wind block. This will allow your dog to warm the area inside the dog house with the heat of his own body.
It is also a good idea to slant the floor slightly toward the doorway of the house. This will help avoid rain from coming in.
Positioning
Consider the direction that you build the dog house facing. Most storms come in from the West and the South. You want to face the house in a different direction. Most professionals recommend facing the house to the East. This will prevent cold air and rain from coming through the door of the dog house.
Detachable Roof
Finally, it is a good idea to put hinges on the roof of your new dog house. It will make it easy to clean the inside and change out the bedding. It is always a good idea to keep your new dog's home clean and tidy.
Summary
Remember that you want your new dog house to be a comfortable place for your dog, and one that provides protection from the harsh weather. Follow these simple steps on how to build a dog house and you are on your way to building the perfect new home for your dog.
