S. (2015, January 07). Sia - Elastic Heart feat. Shia LaBeouf & Maddie Ziegler (Official Video). Retrieved April 19, 2016, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWZGAExj-es
This primary source was perfect for my final paper because it showed how SIA uses proxies in her music videos. This was a music video of Sia’s famous song Elastic heart where Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler dance in what looks to be a cage/jail. Sia says this music video was supposed to represent demons and overcoming the darkness of evil. The child dancer Maddie was supposed to represent Shia LeBouf’s inner demon or childhood past or inner child.
I think I can use this music video as a primary source because it shows the use of proxies and how Sia is hiding in a corner overlooking these so called “demons”. I feel like all of this is evidence that can be used in building her identity. Her music video is a huge characteristic of herself.

H. (2016, February 01). Sia Furler Interview : Reveals Why She Hides Her Face, New Album, Love Life & More. Retrieved April 19, 2016, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iaB7gOGD1Q
I used an interview with Chris Connoley and Sia for one of my primary sources. Sia had her body faced away from Connoley and her back was facing him. Sia explains why she chooses to hide her identity and says that it is purely for personal reasons. She wants to be able to go to Target like a normal human being without feeling harassed by the paparazzi. In the interview Sia also discusses how her music has a dark/sad undertone which relates to her identity and past experiences.
I like this interview because Sia shares her personal identity and describes her choice in lyrics. She chooses one solid concept, such as a chandelier, which would make a great title and then begins to write. The words just come to her naturally and in the matter of minutes she has a whole song completed. Somehow the song relates to her life. She can relate these objects to her identity. Sia battled alcoholism, drug addiction, and depression which is what helped shaped her identity today. I really liked this interview because I knew that these facts were accurate because they were coming straight from Sia. I felt as if I could trust this source more than some of my secondary articles.

I love the podcast idea and find it very creative. I love being active and hands on activities because it keeps me more focused and engaged so i think this is great for students! Alternative assignments is something every teacher should think of. Good source for your final paper for sure.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtXCAtzlg1c
This is podcast video that two students completed for their Literature class. In the podcast, they compare and contrast The Great Gatsby and Macbeth. This podcast consists of multiple modes including audio through voice overs and music, visual through pictures, video, and colors. What is usually a written assignment has been completed through a very short video and the main themes, meaning, and other elements of writing were discussed and demonstrated in this podcast.
I can use this source or my paper as an example of how multimodal composition can be used as an alternative for writing. I think projects like these are great for students who struggle with writing. For those students who are better at saying things than writing it, this is a perfect alternative assignment. Assignments like these allow students to be creative, have more freedom and requires them to be concise and straight to the point. I believe assignments are more fun and interesting for young students compared to writing a traditional essay. Most importantly, the students were still able to show that their competence on the subject.
This is my favorite primary source so far because I love the simplicity of it. In less than six minutes these students were able to identify and discuss the important themes of these literary pieces instead of writing a five page paper about it. I honestly think that multimodal composition will become the future in writing and English classes because I think students would much prefer to do these type of assignments.

This seems like a good article for you however it seems like it is somewhat repetitive. I know that pencil grasping is very important for students because I see this in my student observations now. Some students prefer to write with a fatter pencil because it is easier for them to hold. This pay be something you want to research. The size of a pencil may help a student learn to write better!
Pencil Grasp Development for Writing
Greutman, Heather. “Pencil Grasp Development for Writing.” Web log post. Growing Hands On Kids. 28 Sept. 2010. Web. 19 Apr. 2016.
This blog article is something I can use for my final paper. The author talks about the different development stages of pencil grasp, before a child gets to the correct pencil grasp. I talk about how handwriting has to come first before a child can learn to properly write. Each of the different stages of pencil grasps show improvement and movement towards the final end goal of correctly holding the pencil. By being able to tie in the different stages of pencil grasp I can talk about how students develop leading up to writing.

D. (2014, February 10). Daft Punk Icelandic ELECTROMA Interview 2006 RARE. Retrieved April 19, 2016, from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eEanxKIYXM
Since my final paper discusses how musicians use identity in their music I decided to watch a rare interview with Daft Punk. For this interview they decided to wear paper bags on their heads to hide from the camera. This interview was rare because Daft Punk normally does not agree to doing interviews or anything that involves the media. Daft Punk says that they chose to hide themselves because it was an idea to put a different approach/creativity to their music, and give a new visual approach to music. They wanted to separate the physical image with the creation of creativity. Daft punk also discussed why they chose electronic dance music. They chose this type of music because they felt that it was more creative and was something they could do as a duo.
This primary source was probably one of my favorites because it was roughly five minutes but extremely informative. You could visually see how and why daft punk chooses to hide themselves. They discussed the use of paper bags and helmets that is commonly used as a disguise in their music videos and on stage while performing. It all came down to the choice of wanting to become famous or not and they didn’t want to be. I think this primary source was really helpful for my final paper because it compared reality and fiction. It also talked about today's society and how social media plays a huge rule in ones identity.

Morrissey, T. (2014). The New Real: Iggy Azalea and the Reality Performance. PORTAL: Journal Of Multidisciplinary International Studies, 11(1), 1-17.
In this academic journal article Morrissey discusses her study of black masculinity and how different places have their own meanings for certain sayings and words. For example the term “dirty south” may mean different things to people. Words can be used in different contexts and this goes for music as well. Morrissey also discusses how many rappers assert an identity to their music. They have their own unique way of rapping which builds their identity.
The article then goes on to discuss the controversy of Iggy Azalea. People claim that Iggy Azalea has rejected her Australian identity or failed to properly embody it. I think this article will be helpful for my final paper because it discusses what is considered to be “realness” in black and white cultures. I found this article interesting because it talked about how different cultures embody different identities. Iggy Azalea claims that she can have her own identity regardless of her race. She expresses her identity through her music and thinks that her background should have nothing to do with her choice in music. Although I liked reading about pop culture, this article didn't give me as much information as previous sources have. From this source, I will only be using two facts in my final paper.

Ganeri, Jonardon. “Identity As Reasoned Choice : A South Asian Perspective on the Reach and Resources of Public and Practical Reason in Shaping Individual Identities.” Web. 3 Apr. 2016.
This was an academic journal article about the history of creating an identity through music, story telling, and dance. It talked about the origins of masking an identity and hiding yourself from reality. The author of this article studied African and Indian philosophy. The author discussed how “identity has become something actively chosen rather than merely acquired at birth”. He goes on to say that “ identities are constructed from exercises of reason as derivation from exemplary cases".
I liked this article because I had heard that my topic dated back to ancient Greek times, but it also has its origins in Africa and India. I found this article really interesting because it focused more on the philosophical side of my topic. I did find this article somewhat short though and repetitive. I didn’t use much from this source for my literary review and probably will not use much for my final paper.

“BBC to explore how our Identity is being changed by globalization.” Web. 7 Apr. 2016.
This article discussed how BBC World News is going to be starting a TV show documentary that explores how our identity is being changed by things that are constantly changing in our lives. The channel is releasing a documentary that is set to explore how our identity is being changed by globalization. The channel is examining how individual identities are changing as our generation becomes more and more electronic and connected to social media. The show takes into consideration the technology we use, music we listen to, our looks, language and gender and many other things. It then combines these factors together to see how we have changed the world and looks at how these factors are effecting us.
This source was definitely helpful for my final paper. It just serves as more evidence that our identity can be created through music and technology. It showed how our habits can influence our identity.

Amir, Dorit. "“My Music Is Me”: Musical Presentation As A Way Of Forming And Sharing Identity In Music Therapy Group." Nordic Journal Of Music Therapy 21.2 (2012): 176-193 18p. CINAHL Plus with Full Text. Web. 6 Apr. 2016.
This was another secondary source from Ebsco Host that i found useful for my paper. This article discussed a therapy group that uses music to connect oneself to their identity and to help face their past. The source said “by choosing and recording specific musical pieces on a CD in a specific order the client/student creates a personal and meaningful musical collage, which enables her to create and share her personal and musical identity”. I found this whole article very interesting because i have never seen music be so effective before for someone or even related to therapy before.
I learned a lot in this article that can be used as evidence as to why creating an identity through music can be so beneficial to a person. The source discusses how the activity of creating a cd/playlist and sharing your music with others in the therapy group doesn’t just reflect our identities but is a way of performing and showing our sense of our identities. You can see how the music effects someone by their emotions when the song is being played.

In my paper I discuss writing being linked to identity and how you can tell someones identity from a list that they create. I feel that this would work well because I found 2 sources that incorporate shopping list surveys and studies.

I really like this topic and truly believe that teachers can effectively use computer games in their classroom to help their students better learn. I think its a great way for students to stay active and have fun while also learning. Even though your topic is about texting this source seems to be informative. Just make sure you pick out the important bits to use!

A Pedagogy of Play: Integrating Computer Games into the Writing Classroom
Computer games are something that is not are typically used in the classroom. Research has said that various ways that contemporary computer games influence learning and literacy (Colby &Colby 2008). Games are productive in helping students apply, synthesize and think critically about what they have learned through active and social participation (Colby &Colby 2008) Work and play are something that Colby says when describing computer games in the classroom. Kids are always being told that they need to get their homework done before they are allowed to “play”, but the ideas of putting play with homework is something that will get the kids excited about learning. Gameplay and education have a similar history and having the students learn this maybe will get the view student education in a different way.
I could use this in my final paper because i can show that not only texting can be brought into the educational world in a good way by also gameplay can be brought into the world in a great way.

BATTAN, CARRIE. "Hidden Wonders." New Yorker 92.1 (2016): 94. MasterFILE Premier. Web. 6 Apr. 2016.
This was one of my secondary sources I found on Ebsco Host that I really liked and used to start off my research because it was all about Sia. In the beginning of the semester when this paper was introduced to us I had originally decided to just write about Sia and her identity through her music but throughout the semester I have found many more concepts to discuss in my paper.
I used this source in my literary review and my final paper because it answered a lot of questions for me that I had. It gave examples of when Sia has hidden her identity from her fans and discusses why she chose to do this. This source also goes into Sia’s background discussing her past with battling substance abuse. This source was able to provide me as sort of a timeline of Sia’s life which helped me better understand her as an artist. In this source Sia claims she is ambitious and does want a number one album but just not the fame that comes a long with it. She hides as a protective measure and so that she can easily perform daily tasks as a regular human such as going to the grocery store, etc. I really liked this article because it even discusses the idea of anonymity and how it can be used to benefit musicians. I discuss this concept also in my paper.

I think this is the middle ground you have been looking for. Your topic is really controversial therefore I’m sure you already have tons of information on whether or not religion should be allowed in public schools. I don't necessarily agree with the values part, I think an individual can have great morals and values that aren’t derived from religion. You don't need religion to give you morals....however i think you could still use some of this information! Good luck with your paper!
Christian Teachers Want More Religion in Schools
Nguyen, Gary. “Christian Teachers Want More Religion in Schools - World Religion News.” World Religion News. N.p., 18 Mar. 2016. Web. 18 Mar. 2016.
In Gary Nguyen’s article, “Christian Teachers Want More Religion in Schools, he goes over a few brief points about religion. He states that proselytizing is illegal but a Christian group called the “Christian Education Association International is trying to press to have more religion in schools without crossing any borders. The group states that not teaching religion in schools leaves kids with no morals. The group also trains their teachers in how to effectively teach their students religion without crossing any lines and starting any controversy. This is a tricky situation because the First Amendment states that the government can’t force religion in schools but they also cant control the right of freedom of religion in public places.
This article will work well in my paper because it brings up an interesting controversy. All the articles I’ve read so far have either had a very clear “yes” to religion or “no” to religion. Nothing really in the middle until I came upon this article. The group discussed in this article wants more religion without crossing any borders which is an extremely difficult task since America has such a diverse group of religions nowadays.

I think this interview is really interesting. I never really thought about my first english class as a freshman in college. I do remember learning how to outline/plan a paper much better than I had done previously in high school. I also learned how to revise much better. I felt as if teachers paid more attention to my introduction and conclusion paragraphs rather than the body of the paper. I think this source will be great for your topic and will give you facts for your claims.
Assessing the Writing Process: Do Writing-Intensive First-Year Seminars Change How Students Write?
Kolb, Kenneth H., Kyle C. Longest, and Mollie J. Jensen. “Assessing The Writing Process: Do Writing-Intensive First-Year Seminars Change How Students Write?.” Teaching Sociology 41.1 (2013): 20-31.
In “Assessing the Writing Process: Do Writing-Intensive First-Year Seminars Change How Students Write?” the authors evaluate if what students learn in a first year writing course lead to changes in the way they write. There were pretest and posttest interviews of 34 students. The interviews showed that the classes had little impact on the way they prewrite and draft, but they way they revise and plan were impacted. There is a clear increase in the scores for planning in revising. In the prewriting and drafting scores there is very little change. Some students felt that there was more emphasis put on the very beginning and end of the writing process in their first year writing courses rather than what comes in the middle or what really leads up to the paper.
I can use this for my paper because it provides me with substantial evidence to back up any claims that I may personally make or either provide evidence to oppose what I may say. Also, since it was actually at study that was done on my exact topic, it will help me lead myself in the right direction for an answer. It isn’t just opinions, it is actual facts.

Out of all of the websites I have come across for my topic this has by far been one of my favorites. This article has sparked my interest in my topic even more now and has made me want to research more on multiple concepts such as culture and social media. This author discusses how the internet and the use of social media has made anonymity scarce. Anonymity “is tied to the subversiveness that that culture starts with,” says Kerr. This article discusses how many artists hide themselves because they want people to focus on the music more and less on themselves. I will definitely be using this article because it has given me great information as to why people hide their faces and/or use a different name. This article also talked about how our society now uses the internet so much that many artists don't want to hear criticism. They fear failure. Although this isn’t a secondary source that i could use in my Lit Review, I loved this article and found it very helpful.

APA: BATTAN, C. (2016). HIDDEN WONDERS. New Yorker, 92(1), 94. MLA: BATTAN, CARRIE. "Hidden Wonders." New Yorker 92.1 (2016): 94. MasterFILE Premier. Web. 21 Mar. 2016. Hidden Wonders by Carrie Battan This article I found on ODU’s online database, EBSCO host was very helpful for me with my paper. It discussed how Sia, the Australian pop singer hides under her “oversized wig”. The article also addresses how the artist uses proxies to protect her identity and privacy. She often uses actors or models to perform while she sings, hidden on stage. I learnt that before Sia started to perform she wrote songs for other artists such as Katy Perry, Beyonce, Brittney Spears, and Rihanna. After writing her hit song “Chandelier”, Sia was nominated for four grammys which is exactly what Sia didn’t want to happen. She hated the fame that came with making music but clearly has a passion for it. She hides herself with wigs and paper bags to protect herself from internet commenter’s and public attention. I think that fact alone is great for my paper because it shows the negative side effects to the internet. Sia often names her songs after the way she feels. Her lyrics in her songs portray her emotions with battling her long past of drugs and alcoholism.
I think I can use this article in my paper because it talks about the background of Sia and how she emerges as this artist and her history with shape-shifting. It goes into great detail of how anonymity can be good and generate interest in music for the listeners. The article discusses how listeners like to feel a sense of victory over the real or imagined.

I liked reading your post and actually read your article that you did your annotation on. You never really think about the negative side effects to using social media. I feel as if we have been focusing so much on the positives that we tend to forget the consequences to using social media. So many of us use technology as a barrier to hide from the reality of things. I think you could find many more articles that discuss the cons to using technology/social media and really have a strong argument/paragraph to add to your paper!

Rachoene, Matjorie, and Toks Oyedemi. “From Self-Expression To Social Aggression: Cyberbullying Culture Among South African Youth On Facebook.” Communicatio: South African Journal For Communication Theory & Research 41.3 (2015): 302-319. Communication & Mass Media Complete. Web. 3 Mar. 2016.
This article discusses a study that was performed on how the South African youth express themselves on Facebook. This study was done as a determinant on how much cyber-bullying occurs among the youth in South Africa. The researchers observed daily postings from various individuals from South Africa. The research was done because of the amount of self expression through social media that is now celebrated. The pattern of cyber-bullying was identified through a non-participatory study in which researchers daily observed six different Facebook pages.
I found this article interesting because it focused more on the disadvantages of social media. It discussed how cyber-bullying is an effect of students expressing themselves.
