I think my favorite thing about warhammer 40k just having the setting as a back drop for quieter moments. A guardsmen sitting in the dirt and enjoying a ration, or a child handing a space marine a flower just feels so much more real and impactful when you have the image of eternal war in the back of your mind. Like there is an unimaginable level of death and suffering in the imperium alone, but its still a place where people live. And sometimes nice things still happen.
