North and South Korean dialect differences 🇰🇵🇰🇷! | #2

Hey guys!! It’s that time again!! :))

To start off today’s lesson I’m going to be using another term from ‘crash landing on you’ which is ‘후라이까지마라’ (hu-ra-i-kka-ji-ma-ra) which is a North Korean word that translates to ‘don’t tell porkies’, or in simpler terms, ‘don’t tell lies’. The South Korean version of this word came from Se-ri as she replied to Chi-Su; ‘뻥치지���’ (bbeong-chi-ji-ma) and it is said to translate to ‘don’t kid yourself’, or yet again more simply, ‘don’t tell lies’. As you can see, beside the meaning and the use of ‘지마’ (which is derived from ‘하지마’) for ‘stop’, these two phrases don’t actually have much in common, but from my own research I was able to find two other commonly used South Korean terms (with the same previously mentioned meaning) that are more similar to that of the North Korean word stated above, these two phrases are: ‘거짓말 하지마라’ (keo-jit-mal / ha-ji-ma-ra) which is a more polite version of the saying, where as the second of the two ‘구라까지마’ (gu-ra-kka-ji-ma) is to only be used amongst close friends as ‘구라’ (gu-ra) is the slang word for ‘lie’, meaning it is not suitable to be used outside of casual situations.

In terms of similarity, it can be seen that the two newest phrases have endings closer to that of ‘후라이까지마라’ than ‘뻥치지마’ did, especially within the casual slang term due to the use of ‘까지마’ (a conjugated form of ‘까지다’ which means: ‘to be impudent/cheeky/ill-mannered’, therefore, ‘까지마’ is saying to not do those things, as it literally means ‘do not do that’), which is surprising due to the words more recent creation. This therefore shows an overlap between the two dialects, which is likely to be due to the South still using ‘pure Korean’ (as evidence of Konglish has been prevalent in my past lessons), as although the phrases are not completely the same, the conjugations and grammar rules used to form them are.

Since I’m on the topic of terms and phrases being similar yet different amongst the two dialects, here are some other words that follow that same principle!: (Eng->NK->SK)

Bloom->피여 (pi-yeo)->피어 (pi-eo).

Thankful/Thank you->고마와 (go-ma-wa)->고마워 (go-ma-wo).

Near->가까와 (ga-kka-wa)->가까워 (ga-kka-wo).

Count->세여 (se-yeo)->세어 (se-eo).

Cold water->랭수 (raeng-su)->냉수 (naeng-su).

Woman->녀자 (nyeo-ja)->여자 (yeo-ja).

Toilet->위생실 (wi-saeng-sil)->화장실 (hwa-jang-sil).

Jump->뛰여 (ddwi-yeo)->뛰어 (ddwi-eo).

Hammer->마치 (ma-chi)->망치 (mang-chi).

Theory->릴온 (lil-on)->이론 (il-on).

Summer->녀름 (nyeo-leum)->여름 (yeo-leum).

Worker->로동자 (ro-dong-ja)->노동자 (no-dong-ja).

Vocab summary: (NK=SK=ENG)

후라이까지마라 = 뻥치지마/거짓말 하지마라/구라까지마 = Don’t tell lies/don’t tell porkies/don’t kid yourself.

하지마 = Stop (SK term only).

구라 = Lie (casual SK term only).

까지마 = Do not do that (NK+SK).

까지다 = To be impudent/cheeky/ill-mannered (NK+SK).

피여 = 피어 = Bloom.

고마와 = 고마워 = Thankful/thank you.

가까와 = 가까워 = Near.

세여 = 세어 = Count.

랭수 = 냉수 = Cold Water.

녀자 = 여자 = Woman.

위생실 = 화장실 = Toilet.

뛰여 = 뛰어 = Jump.

마치 = 망치 = Hammer.

Since COVID I’ve noticed more Korean teachers posting lessons on Youtube. A lot of them have criminally low views so I thought I would provide some links as I think they would be useful to many of you. 

While the lessons are mostly in Korean please don’t be put off. The teachers speak slowly and clearly so even low intermediate learners should have no problem understanding :)

아임달imdal Korean teacher

Grammar and vocab videos both TOPIK specific and more everyday content. Beginner through to high intermediate level.  I really like all of the videos I have watched. In some of her videos she sets ‘homework’ and asks viewers to post in in the comments and she will personally mark it for you! 

현명한 선택,知好樂

Mainly intermediate level grammar comparison videos (ie, what is the difference between similar grammar points). She takes requests from viewers.

10분한국어 10min Korean

As the channel name suggests most of her videos are around 10 minutes long. Predominately intermediate and advanced grammar lessons but she also has videos on hanja. 

베이직 코리안 basic Korean

Beginner content from reading and pronouncing hangul through to basic grammar. Videos are in Korean but have English subtitles. 

PARKSSEAM OK-KOREAN

Intermediate level. It seems like she goes through a whole textbook in her videos. There are also TOPIK writing videos.

🏆 Learn How To Be More Productive With Notion 🏆

Notion is not at all an unfamiliar name, as it has been countlessly praised on social media for its aid in productivity. For me, I heard about Notion about a year ago, but only until last week that I started trying out this application (after hearing praises from my boyfriend nonstop) and I have to admit, I’m hooked.

So, what exactly is Notion? And why should you start using it asap?

1️⃣ What is Notion?

Simply put, Notion is a note taking application, just like Evernote. It impresses users with its minimalistic interface and a whole lot of tools waiting to be discovered. But, Notion doesn’t stop at being “just a note taking application”, it’s a solution to better productivity, an all-in-one tool that you need for your personal life as well as your career.

2️⃣ What does Notion offer?

For me, Notion is like an online computer, where you can create an unlimited amount of folders and files. The only difference is that you can access to this computer anywhere you want as long as you have internet.

These are, generally, what Notion comes to offer it users:

- Unlimited pages & Blocks. - Infinite Hierarchy - Pages within pages within pages. - Tables & Databases - Categorize your data exactly how you want, and reference data from other tables or projects. - A web clipper browser extension. - A lot of premade templates. - Sync data between devices. - Native Android, iPhone, Windows, and Mac apps.

3️⃣ Why you should use Notion:

- Not just a note-taking application: You can journal, manage projects and time efficiently, etc. Almost everything is possible with Notion.

- Simple, clean, unlimited: You can create unlimited amount of folders and files and everything is navigatable through pages’ map.

- Quick reference with @: At any point in your typing, you can enter an @ to create easy references to pages, people, and dates.

- Easy embeding with /: The forward-slash ( / ) character works just like the @, but for embeds. You can perform nearly 100 tasks with the forward slash.

- Teamwork 24/7 with a click: You can add people and change members’ roles in each page (same thing as Google Doc). You can also keep a record on all the changes made in each page.

- Drag and drop blocks: In Notion, each paragraph, each header, each picture is consider a block of information. You can drag and drop these blocks wherever you like.

- A lot of templates to choose from: It’s great if you can design your own template, but for someone who knows nothing about designing like me, templates are my life saver.

- Available on all devices: From Android to iPhone, from Mac to Windows, Notion is available everywhere.

- Import/export data easily: Notion allows users to import from various sources (like Evernote, Trello, etc.) and export data as HTML, PDF, or Markdown.

- Reasonable price: For most people only upgrading to “Personal Pro” plan is enough. And this plan is only $4/month, a pretty cheap price compare to what you can get out of this application.

4️⃣ Free Personal Pro plan upgrade

Now that I have done my part introducing Notion to you, I’m going to share a tip on how to upgrade your Notion Personal plan to Personal Pro plan FOR FREE.

However, this tip only works for those who have university emails. For example, my university email is halley*****@kookmin.ac.kr so I am eligible to get the Personal Pro plan for free from Notion.

All you have to do is sign up or sign in with your university email. Then click on “Settings & Members”, on the left side, choose “Upgrade”. Skip all the promotional stuffs about all the plans, scroll down until you see “Students & educators”. Click “Get free Education plan”.

If your email is eligible to get the plan for free, you just have to hit confirm to finalize. But if your email is not eligible then… I’m so sorry it doesn’t work out for you :<

5️⃣ My personal opinion on Notion

I actually started to read a lot more after using Notion’s “Reading List” template. The reason is because I can save the articles I read and kinda… decorate them the way I like. So I read to collect information and to create cool looking archives as well.

I also made a list including all the movies I watched and all the movies I want to watch. Took me a while to list everything out but the result was unexpectedly neat and satisfactory.

Lastly, I planned this post by Notion. From research, draft to official posting, I went through all the stages with Notion and I am 100% satisfied by how much help Notion offered me. I usually draft in Note, which is a mess because sometimes I cannot distinguish the main ideas I wrote down and the ideas that were still in consideration. Notion gave me a template that is clear and easy to follow, my writing had never gone to smoothly before, istg.

My conclusion is, just give Notion a try, I’m sure you will fall head over heel for it soon.

✔️ THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 이미 AND 벌써 ❌

Both 이미 and 벌써 means “already” but they can be used in different situations: - When the speaker knows what was/is going to happen, use 이미. - When the speaker doesn’t know what was/is going to happen, use 벌써.

You can refer to these examples below for better understanding~

Example 1: 그 사람은 이미 학교를 졸업했어요. The speaker has long known about this fact and is only relaying the info.

Example 2: 그 사람은 벌써 학교를 졸업했어요! The speaker, or the listener, had no idea about this fact and has only learned of this shortly ago.

Example 1: 그는 이미 왔다고 했어요. The speaker knows “he” was on the way and has now arrived. This was predicted and not a surprise.

Example 2: 그는 벌써 왔다고요? The speaker did not expect “he” to come or come so soon.

I don’t know what happened to us. Things sort of just fell apart. We were right for each other, and then we weren’t.
