STARTER CALL
– @pearlsbefit
Cecelia has been to the White House before, more than once. But that was different; press pass in hand, she was her own woman; Cecelia Holmes, Vanity Fair. Tonight she didn’t even arrive as herself. She stroked over the embossed letters on her name card, Cecelia St James. Her first dinner at the White House. Tonight she wasn’t a journalist, or an editor, or a model, tonight she was a wife. It was just as hard a job. Some people thought money equaled power, and she and her husband has plenty of that, but it was’t true. Power equaled power, and that’s what a friendship with the president gave them. Or it would, when they had it.
She raised her head and adorned her smile just in time for the First Lady to reach her. “Mrs Kennedy,” she began, offering a hand. “It is so lovely to see you again, and looking so well. Your table is gorgeous.”
❝ IT’S A PLEASURE, AS ALWAYS, ms. holmes. ❞ gently gripping the editor’s hand within her own, jackie feels too pleased to greet the woman as she would anywhere else. to have a fellow writer, one who also know the tug this life often places upon them, is a singular pleasure. her eyes cast over the artfully set table, littered in flowers and priceless china, red painted lips turning up into a smile. ❝ thank you, i wish i could say they were entirely my idea but my chief of staff has a far better eye than i. ❞ dinners could be utterly fascinating or an utter bore, and she strives to keep it the former.
