‘We need more loud, unashamed queers’ yes but some of you can’t even seem to handle a bisexual woman liking men.

if you don't do anything else today,
Please have a moment of silence for the people who were killed instead of freed when news of emancipation finally reached the furthest corners of the american south.
have another moment for the ledgers, catalogs, and records that were burned and the homes that were destroyed to hide the presence of very much alive and still enslaved people on dozens of plantations and homesteads across the south for decades after emancipation.
and have a third moment for those who were hunted and killed while fleeing the south to find safety across the border, overseas, in the north and to the west.
black people. light a candle, write a note to those who have passed telling them what you have achieved in spite of the racist and intolerant conditions of this world, feel the warmth of the flame under your hand, say a prayer of rememberance if you are religious, place the note under the candle, and then blow it out.
if you have children, sit them down and tell them anything you know about the life of oldest black person you've ever met. it doesn't have to be your own family. tell them what you know about what life was like for us in the days, years, decades after emancipation. if you don't know much, look it up and learn about it together.
This is Juneteenth.
white people CAN interact with this post. share it, spread it.

Look y’all. Tecahing is the fucking trenches, no matter where. I’m in deep south. I’m nonbinary. My kids call me Mx. Every day, I grow more concerned for my current third graders (8/9 year olds).
Many NEED to be retained. They needed to be retained far before now. But penalizing schools for retained students creates an uneducated society- because schools rely on that funding to be successful,
Poor socialization, reading, and writing skills is killing teaching. It leads to behaviors. Unengaged parents is killing teaching, because the kids know they won’t be in trouble.
Parent kids.
Count with kids.
Read with kids.
Or we are done. The world will grind to a stop and go downhill faster than you can say “Oh shi-“.
I used to be mad about "whole language" reading approaches in theory but now I work with school-age kids and I am mad about it in practice.
#personal rant#as a teacher#PARENT YOUR FUCKING KIDS#i adore my kids#dont take this as not Im a teacher for a reason#but kids need parents not ipads#not social media#not tv#be a family and make them want to learn

Check out this upcoming indie game - Kun'tewiktuk: A Mi'kmaw Adventure
youtube
A fantasy adventure game inspired by Mi’kmaw legend and folklore. It chronicles the adventures of siblings Wasuek ("Flower") and her brother U'n ("Fog"). They get separated one summer morning and they go on an adventure through the spirit world to reunite.
The game is produced by Green Robot Studios and Kji-Wikuom Studios (the later of which is located in Eskasoni First Nation).
The creation of the game primarily stemmed from a desire to preserve Mi'kmaw language and culture.
There will be a version that is all in Mi'kmaq.
The game's villains and adversaries are inspired by Mi'kmaw legend and folklore. They include ogres, ice creatures, giant spirit animals, and much more.
The game features art from Loretta Gould.
All voices are performed by Mi'kmaw speakers.
Upon release it will be available on Steam and Epic Games.

Random thing I’m thinking about today is that there used to be a solid effort to preserve Louisiana French but then it got legally attacked in the 1920s when they banned French speaking schools and French speaking people from Louisiana were really important for communication and translation during WW2 but French still kept declining and French schools are legal again now but a lot of the teachers in those schools are from Quebec or France so the kids aren’t learning Cajun French and French is still on the decline in Louisiana and like that’s supposed to be where you can hear French in a swamp we need to keep that going like at one point half of people in Louisiana spoke French and now that number is down to like six percent or something

Hey friends. I wanted to be transparent. I don’t repost requests for money from my asks. I don’t have the time or spoons to verify those asks, and as a teacher I refuse to risk someone underage being scammed. I wholeheartedly hope you get the support you need!
