Dear Mr. Smith,

How time flies that this class of Eng 307 is coming to the end. Going over of the whole process of learning in ENG 307, I’ve made great progress in business writing and been familiar with the professional skills and strategies in business writing. Actually, I’ve been worried about my learning before this class started because I was from China which has a great difference in business culture and I thought maybe it would be a boundary for me to learn different kinds of business mannar and the tradition of writing. Moreover, when I went through the introduction of this class, I was excited because I was really interested in business writing and I hope to improve and enance my writing skills, at the same time, I also worried about those unfamiliar media for finishing homework will be a limitation for me to get a better understanding and performance of this class. Here I sincerely appreciate it for your kindness and patience to me when I got something misunderstood and have troubles in my study, thank you so much Mr. Smith. In the following parts I would like to conclude my outcomes after the studying in ENG 307.

For the Rhetoric Skills, in every project I did rhetoric analysis to exactly focus on the proper audience and figure it out what conscious content will be effective for me to finish my project and achieve the targeted purpose just as it shows in the following picture. 

I think this kind of analysis rapidly enhanced my capacity of composing the multitude of business and be more familiar with the requirement under actual specific business mission, what’s more, this kind of ability can be applied not only in business writing but also in the other academic writings and workings. However, I found that I didn’t do this perfectly every time because of the incomplete understanding of the specific topic or misunderstood, therefore I think I should enhance my capacity of concentrate and comprehensive skills in the future.

After drafting of every project, I did reflections and revision to fit the defect existed in my  earlier work and enhance it to keep it error free and perfect. Here I should say thank you for your setting of the peer review part for every project, Mr. Smith. Because it is obvious that the writer himself had made a great effort for his work so that it is hard for him to review his own work or report in a totally opposite or different view, which makes that the writer himself cannot conclude more creative suggestion for his work to make it better but mostly based on the structure he had built and this cannot make his work be enhanced in a great degree. In other words, peer review is essential and significant as to hear different new voice of my own work so that I can come up with new ideas to revise my fault that I didn’t found before. What’s more, it is really helpful to communicate with my classmates due to their perfect performance and excellent study, I really learn a lot from them. I also hope the advice I given to my classmates will be helpful to them.

In the project 2, my classmate replied to our draft report and gave us really useful advice, according to her suggestion, I developed the main section and conclusion better.

Mentioned about information literacy & management, I have experienced an interesting but meaningful process for the design of information in every project. As to find out the most effective and professional way to express the information I want my audience accepted from my work, it is necessary to design a logical structure in every specific report or even a memo of work. So I always considered it seriously to decide which part of information I should emphasize and attract more attention to avoid my audience losing any significant information. In my reading notes, some of them were written in the form of mind-manage guideline. This is a great tool that can clearly show the logic and the most important part I learnt from the specific material. It also seems vivid and interesting as well as organized.

The multimodal media used in ENG 307 is very characteristic compared to the tradition class and the method of finishing homework. I post my homework through Tumblr, Google Drive Folder, and the Voicethread in UA, which I used it for the first time when finishing the presentation in project 3. Although it is not as convenient as the single method to upload my homework, although I was not familiar with every required tools for finishing homework, and even revised many times to make it right, (such as the Voicethread) but during the process of finishing the four projects, I have become more familiar with the available access to finish a specific homework, which greatly enhanced my learning skills and will be useful in the future study and work. It’s a pity that I didn’t make a perfect ending for my voicethread, but I will enhance it in the future and try to do it much better than the present one as I’ve been more familiar with the usage of it that time than now.

Collaborative work means lots to me in the ENG 307. Because I was worried if I can’t get along well with my classmate and how it will be if there were some trouble among us during the communication and cooperation for finishing the project. So I tried to communicate with my partners a lot and discussed the assignment and details of our project in order to make effort with my partners to contribute more for our team. I sincerely appreciate it that my partners are friendly and considerable, although there were some misunderstanding during the process of completing project 2, we still made a good job in the end. The most important outcome from collaborative work for me is to respect your team members and take your responsibility for your team, these are not only important when I work together with my classmates in school, but also can be applied when I work in a business situation and participant in a group and collaborate with others. Effective communication helped me avoid wasting time on useless questions or potential arguments, every member’s feedback also can be passed to the specific member.

In a formal business writing, a proper genre leads to the success of your work due to its effects on the expression of my opinions and information in my work. As the purposes of writing vary from one to another, it is obvious that the proper choice of genre will totally influence the overall performance and the acceptance of the targeted audience, and this should base on the analysis of the content and targeted audience. For example, in the peer review, I wrote it  in a more casual tone because the audience is my classmates and the aim of this writing is to help my classmate revise her work to make it better. But if it turns to a business purpose, I wrote it in the form of peer review memo in a formal format ( as shown in the picture below) to show my professional attitude and respect to others.

Another example is our project of job application. As I was described as an employee who is find job and want to apply a specific position, I made different kinds of resumes and draft FAQ and so on to enrich my job application documents for this specific purpose.

My last outcome of ethics perspective mainly showed in the citations and the understanding of project 2 as we developed a summer program for the children in privacy in Spain. In my reading notes, I carefully cited the work I referred to in respect to the intellectual property as well as the original copyrights. And this reflected in our project 2 mostly. Due to the research of the current situation of children in Spain and what method can make our plan of summer program for them come true, I did a large amount of research as well as my partners, and some works we should mentioned in our draft for this project. Therefore,  we made cautious effort to keep the citations in a proper format.

The ethic responsibility also means the work produced should be positive and comply with the standard of social moral. Our project 2 aimed to help those children in poverty in Spain to guarantee their equal rights of education and satisfy the basic living requirement and enhance their situation to let them enjoy a better period of growth. I really admire this purpose because I have been taken participant in the public charity found and as a volunteer to teach the children who live in the undeveloped region in China, I know this means a lot to those children and the whole world to help them get rid of limitations from the weak government and serious social situation to enjoy their equal rights and grow happily, which showed our ethic consideration when we decide which topic we should choose for the project 2.

Dear sir, thank you for your effort and contribution for this class as well as for all of our classmates. It is  my honor to have the opportunity to get access to business writing with the direction of you, I’ve been enhanced a lot compared to what I used to be, not only in my academic writing skills, but also the proper way of analysis questions and work out them, which can be  a lifetime guide for me in the future. Although I didn’t perform perfectly all the time even made mistake that bothered you, I still appreciate it for my improvement under your teaching. Thank you again Mr. Smith! I’m looking forward to have a next chance to get in your class and I will do a better job in the future.

DD14_ Reformat Tumblr

#How I reformat my Tumblr#

Because I have not ever made any special design for my Tumblr page, this time I try to make some thing new as well as finish this part of homework.

First, I choose one of my favorite color- Blue as the background and the color of my name.

I viewed different themes, and applied those I prefer to in my tumblr. The first one I chose is Defensive, it seems really simple and elegant and I thought it would be suitable to show my works in this semester as well as the portfolio of project 4.

So I applied it and edited.

But it worked out not like the sample and seems a little boring.

Then I chose another theme, which can let my posts be exhibited like books in library.

There was still a problem: my posts can not be shown completely because of the limitation of size and length of posts.

Finally I chose the following one

I really like this simple design, the choice of colors also seems harmonious, which can let the readers go over my posts more easily.

What do you need to watch out for?

I need to pay attention to finishing the task assigned to me seriously, not only be honest but also be responsible for the whole work. Especially I should be careful when mentioned copyright issues during the research of information and draft proposal and report.

How will you make sure you double check?

I will check my work first according to our purpose in the project and proposal to make sure if there is anything went opposite to our original imagine. Next I will turn to my partners to help me check it.

Project ahead to your future profession; what ethical issues do you think you will need to be concerned about then?

I need to be concerned about the legal issues such as copyright because during the process of finishing our project, we need to do a lot of research and reach some conclusion based on others’ work. So if we quoted some works for profit or not, we should pay attention to the copyright and other intellectual rights of the original author.  

What will you do to make sure you remain true to yourself, your company, and your profession/discipline?

Be sure to explicitly discuss how documents, and parts of documents, are recycled and reused within your profession/discipline and how issues of authorship and plagiarism are potentially handled.

Virtual worlds are social networks facilitated by online computer based simulated environments. Second Life is similar in some ways to online games. However, these features can be used in a global business for video conference among people located in different regions and save time greatly, which is valued much by the bussiness people.  “ In Second Life, professionals can create online avatars to represent themselves in meetings, training sessions, sales presentations, and even casual conversations with customers they happen to bump into.”( Bovee, Courtland L., and John V. Thill. Excellence in business communication. Pearson Higher Ed, 2012. ) Second life make it ture to achieve business purpose by a vivid form thanks to the internet technology.

Although the reviews of Zoho vary from person to person, we can not deny Zoho has already made a great progress to adapt the development of business in last decades.

Title: Reading Note on the Study of Ingratiation’s impact on job applications

 Purpose of the article

One of the most important objectives of an applicant is to convince the decision-maker or the interviewer that he or she is the best candidate for the position.[1] The purpose of this essay is to examine the influence of impression management tactics (e.g. ingratiation) applied in job application letters on perceived qualifications and hiring recommendations. The study aims to build on recent research done in the interview context, by studying impression management specifically in the written form pertaining to a job application.

 The present research is guided by the following specific key research questions:

(1) Do written four types of ingratiation influence selection decisions?

(2) How effective are each of these ingratiatory tactics relative to each other in influencing selection decisions?

 Types of ingratiation in job applications

Four types of ingratiation in job applications are (1) self enhancement; (2) other enhancement; (3) opinion conformity; and (4) rendering favors.

 Methodology

Impression management was manipulated through the cover letter, such that, each subject received five cover letters, four of which engaged in ingratiation and one that had no ingratiation. Participants were required to evaluate the applicants’ qualifications and make selection decisions

 Result

The finding of the study is that ingratiation led to significantly higher ratings of applicants, and self-focused tactics were more effective than other-focused tactics.
