Assignment 1: Critical Analysis
Bostrom, N. and Yudkowsky, E., (2014). The ethics of artificial intelligence. The Cambridge handbook of artificial intelligence, 316, p.334.
I chose to critically evaluate the article “The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence” by Nick Bostrom and Eliezer Yudkowsky. Bostrom is a Professor, Director of the Future of Humanity Institute, Oxford University. Eliezer Yudkowsky is an American writer on rationality, known for his view that the invention of Artificial General Intelligence. I am particularly interested in this article as it mainly focused on some of the ethical ideas of artificial intelligence, which is a very important aspect of my major. A question that triggered e in this article was artificial intelligence (AI) error, who is responsible for it? The book was published in the Cambridge University Press in 2011
The first paragraph refers to a hypothetical scenario of the process of the applicant’s mortgage loan in the bank which needs to be approved or not by an artificial intelligence algorithm. The bank has a lawsuit from a rejected mortgage applicant who says the AI algorithm has racial discrimination in the approval process. But the bank argues that this is unlikely to happen because the AI algorithm is fair and it knows nothing about the applicant’s race. But in reality, this is partially true. Statistics showed that the bank has limited approval rates for black applicants. However, a panel of judges who are not artificial intelligence algorithms approves 10 applicants with the same qualifications. This panel has been formed in order to find out what might have happened to the AI algorithm in the process of accepting white applications and rejecting black applications. Nevertheless, it is not a black or white process, it should be taken into account the favorable parts of an AI algorithm in bank procedures. I think the use of artificial intelligence algorithms in banks can efficiently complete the entire process of signing borrowers from face-to-face to online electronic contracts. This means that users who need a loan can complete the entire loan process in one machine, greatly reducing the loan process and shortening the loan cycle to give customers an excellent experience; for banks, it can reduce a large number of labor costs, while using a series of intelligent tools to effectively avoid risks and increase the safety of lending. It also brings an updated sense of experience to the applicant. Artificial intelligence has played a more and more important role in the development of modern society. Although there has been a decline in black applications, there is no denying the positive role played by artificial intelligence. As for a small number of cases, I believe that an artificial confirmation check can be carried out. Therefore, the application of artificial intelligence in a large range occurs only after a human program them to work properly. After all, it is a combination of both, humans have a more flexible brain, and artificial intelligence was created to facilitate modern life.
As the authors suggested, the challenge of machine ethics is similar to many different challenges that exist when designing machines. Robot arms are designed to avoid harming humans. Researchers determine the limits of the robot’s speed and acceleration, as well as the ideal size and shape of the tools they use so that they can safely interact with humans. Pain is subjective. When a robot hits you, no one cares if you have a sting.
The authors also mentioned that transparency is not the only feature in AI. Predictability is an important element in artificial intelligence algorithms to take over social functions for people in management. Judges can follow past precedents, and legal systems can be predictable as if they were writing a rule and implementing it. It also provides a predictable environment for citizens. But it is not always good for engineers to follow past examples as technology is improving. However, predictability is really important for artificial intelligence algorithms. The paper also referred to a new study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that shows that algorithms can predict someone’s behavior faster and more reliably than humans.
Maneuverability, one the other hand, authors noted that is very important and powerful for artificial intelligence algorithms as well. For example, aerial bomb-scanning machines with visual systems do a good job of preventing some of the man-made loopholes. Just like the shape next to the pistol, it neutralizes the recognition. The general standard of information security is the robustness of anti-manipulation, which is not the standard that occurs frequently during machine learning; but essentially, how to expand the system.
The authors mentioned the anecdote presented by Wendell Wallach and Colin Allen in their book the “Moral Machine” (2008). One of the authors left on vacation, and when he arrived abroad, his credit card stopped working. While confused, he called the bank and learned that an automated burglary scheme had determined that he was trying to make allegations and it was very likely that someone had stolen his card. To protect him, the machine refused his credit card transaction. In such cases, an information technology is determining the likelihood of malicious activity, which can result in minor harm to the person that it was initially trying to help. Machines are allowed to change financial decisions about people without the excessive supervision of manual agents. Whether or not you get a credit card, a mortgage, the insurance price you have to pay, etc., are usually determined by the machine.
In the last paragraph of this section, the author mentions that robust manipulation is a common criterion for information security. But it’s not a common standard. In this case, I think the author is flawed, and no examples are given for other criteria. Further, in the article a question has been posted; when there is an error in the AI system and the task fails, who will bear the final result? In my opinion, one of the purposes of AI in medicine is to reduce the number of misdiagnoses, and in some cases, technology has approached or even exceeded the success rate of human doctors. Charlotte Tschider, a researcher in health and intellectual property law at DePaul University said: “these devices are not yet a substitute for human knowledge. ”. This, in turn, means that healthcare providers using artificial intelligence [doctors] remain responsible for all possible problems, with the exception of a few cases; at least, from a legal point of view. They expect doctors to weigh AI findings and recommendations against other evidence, such as traditional diagnostic tests, medical histories, and advice from other doctors, to carefully examine patients. So AI is just an accessory to facilitate the procedure rather than take the actions by itself.
To my point of view, artificial intelligence algorithms have many benefits for humans, even if there are some ethical aspects which will always need to be taken into consideration. But artificial intelligence as a whole is an aid. Like application in medical treatment, in order to improve the accuracy of diagnosis, there is a large number of examples, algorithms can rely on precedents for prediction. The most important thing is that humans need to make critical judgments and machines to assist them.

Assignment 1: Annotated Bibliography
1.
Martınez-Miranda, J. and Aldea, A., (2005). Emotions in human and artificial intelligence. Computers in Human Behavior, 21(2), [Online] pp.323-341. DOI: 10.1016/j.chb.2004.02.010
This article discusses the importance of emotion in artificial intelligence (AI). It also shows how computers express emotion which is part of a human’s behavior. Different emotions can affect a person’s behavior. When a computer is mimicking human behavior, the computer cannot only think and reason but also correctly express emotions.
I’m interested in this article because of the huge difference I how humans versus machines express emotions. The fact that computers can express and potentially understand emotions was a very intriguing aspect of why I chose this article. In my future projects, I will be able to better understand the emotional sources of the AI settings
2.
Mateas, M., (2003). Expressive AI: Games and Artificial Intelligence. In DiGRA Conference. [Online] Available at:http://steel.lcc.gatech.edu/~mateas/publications/MateasDIGRA2003.pdf
This article examines the combination of games and artificial intelligence. Game designers are beginning to shift their focus to artificial intelligence, linking game research/design practices to technical research. The authors called this new era of research expressive artificial intelligence. They provide a language to talk about “readable” behavior, in other words, the player can read the behavior.
This article is relevant to my interest topic as I designed a game in my project. But also, in modern development, artificial intelligence is a trend. This article can help me to better use this technology in the development of the game process in the future and make it more interactive.
3.
Drachen, A. and Smith, J.H., (2008). Player talk—the functions of communication in multiplayer role-playing games. Computers in Entertainment (CIE), 6(4), [Online] pp56. DOI: 10.1145 / 1461999.1462008
This article is a comprehensive study of the role of interpersonal communication in digital and desktop role-playing games. The author also starts a series of empirical game experiments. Also, the player in the game communication is analyzed. Additionally, he mentioned how the media affect language communication in multiplayer games.
This article can help me notice details that did not fall on my attention so far, for example, the author has carried on the experiment to the player’s speech communication in the game. In future design projects, I can make a major difference, pay more attention to the increased interactivity in multiplayer platforms.
4.
Megill, J., (2014). Emotion, cognition and artificial intelligence. Minds and Machines, 24(2), [Online] pp.189-199.
This article analyses emotional research (cognitive science, neuroscience, and philosophy), which shows that emotional storage plays a different role in cognition. The authors ask the question and also try to reply it throughout the paper: is cognitive ability a necessary part of responding to emotions? The paper also puts forward questions from multiple positions and concludes that emotion does play an important role in human cognition.
This article helps me understand more deeply why machines lack emotion but how they also overcome this lack. “Artificial intelligence lack human intelligence”. This is a statement under question as a lot of controversies has been placed around this topic. Overall, this article gives me an additional theoretical basis in the process of future practice.
5.
Velásquez, J.D., (1998). When robots weep: emotional memories and decision-making. In AAAI/IAAI [online] pp.70-75. Available at: http://www.aaai.org/Papers/AAAI/1998/AAAI98-010.pdf
In this article, the author proposes a flexible agent architecture that integrates drive, emotion, and behavior in order to gain emotion. The authors also study how machines select and control behavior. It also shows how the mechanism of the original emotion is included in the proposed model. Machines may act as a bias mechanism and select actions in the decision-making process.
The authors show how the emotions of the machine are in the process of selection and control. This article could play an important role in the development of my future projects. It gave me a deeper understanding of the theory of artificial intelligence. I may not be an inventor in the future but this theoretical knowledge and research results can play a role in my future related projects.

LaChat, M.R., (1986). Artificial intelligence and ethics: an exercise in the moral imagination. AI Magazine, 7(2), [online] p.70. DOI:https: //doi.org/10.1609/aimag.v7i2.540
This article discusses some ethical problems caused by artificial intelligence. Machines are unable to calculate and understand human experience because many of human behavior is sudden. Dealing with some of the behaviors produced by artificial intelligence can be good or bad. The author believes that we should be more thoughtful and careful with regards to AI.
This article is relevant to my interests and helpful for my understanding since I’m also focused on the ethics of artificial intelligence. This article gives me more ideas for future research.
7.
Bostrom, N. and Yudkowsky, E., (2014). The ethics of artificial intelligence. The Cambridge handbook of artificial intelligence, Cambridge University Press 316, p.334.
This book discusses the possible problems of artificial intelligence in the near future, the challenges and ethical issues that artificial intelligence faces as it approaches the human race. The author also points out that artificial intelligence is different from human beings in some basic aspects related to our ethics and morality.
I am very interested in this book, as, for example, the article talks about the use of artificial intelligence by some banks to approve the results of the loan. This shows that artificial intelligence in future development is an inevitable phenomenon. It is able to improve efficiency and reduce errors. It reflects more of the benefits of AI and strengthens my confidence in the field.
8.
Tegmark, M., (2017). Life 3.0: Being human in the age of artificial intelligence. Knopf.
This book explores the areas where artificial intelligence affects; such as work, society, war, crime, etc. It also addresses issues such as how do we ensure that people do not lose their jobs and incomes. How can we, humans, avoid the global crisis caused by intelligence? How to ensure the safety of artificial intelligence. This is one of the most popular among artificial intelligence books. It gives me a better understanding of AI and its impact on humans’ life. Artificial intelligence will be the best or worst thing that people will ever encounter? The authors let the reader come across this question and they really look at artificial intelligence in an objective way where they try to calm the audience.
9.
Bostrum, N., (2014). Superintelligence: paths, dangers, strategies. Oxford University Press
The book explores the future of artificial super-intelligence: machines (or other artificial intelligence means) capable of performing general cognitive tasks that, once they only performed by humans The technology will grow at an ever-increasing rate and posit machines to deal with cognitive tasks as well. The authors argue that while this future is far from inevitable, super-intelligence is a threat worth taking seriously.
The book is also relevant to my research and gave me an update on research and theories that I was not aware of so far, such as the intelligence of super-intelligent machines that already outstripping those of humans. Humans should master it well and never forget that, no matter how AI develops, it’s just an aid!
10.
Liu, L.H., (2010). The Freudian robot: Digital media and the future of the unconscious. University of Chicago Press.
This book shows how early experiments in avant-garde literature used alphabetic writing and psychoanalytic word association games to promote the mathematization of digital media. The authors argue that this not only changes the perception and pointless threshold of communication but also forces a new understanding of human-computer interaction at this level.
The book deals with segments of the unconscious which interests me; the manifestation of Freud’s unconscious theory in today’s digital media. The experiments and results in the book gave me a deeper understanding of the unconscious which can I use for my future project development.
11.
Breazeal, C., (2003). Emotion and sociable humanoid robots. International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, 59(1-2), pp.119-155.
This article focuses on the interaction between human and humanoid robot. The authors also did experiments to simulate the ability of robots to recognize emotions through the use of psycholinguistic intonation. They evaluate the emotional behavior of the robot as a whole and noted that robots can perform facial evaluations (such as eyebrows, smiles) therefore they can interact with humans.
This article is relevant to my topic. I have been investigating recently whether AI has the same emotions as humans. Many articles show that some machines do have emotions. We can analyze robots’ human facial expressions that they use to interact with humans. I think this is a very big improvement. This article helps my research and future ideas for projects.

[Research] VR Travel Games-Titans of Space 2.0
In my course, I have studied virtual reality. In this field, I am very interested in virtual tourism. First of all, virtual travel is a great way. It can avoid and solve many problems. For example: People who are busy can use this virtual tour to relax. Virtual travel is more cost effective.
Outer space travel can be said to be the ultimate goal of many people, but the price of each space flight exceeds 20 million US dollars (Crouch, 2001), and the price is expensive,
I read the relevant literature on virtual reality tourism. The literature confirms that virtual reality tourism is more support and benefits (Guttentag, 2010).
This app offers theme park rides through our solar system (and others). It allows the user to control the rhythm of the experience. The immersive virtual reality experience is even more shocking.

[Research] 3D Projection-Le Petit Chef
youtube
Le Petit Chef, this work combines projection and food to present a short story to the guests. In the expected content, a little chef grilled steaks and chefs for guests who grow vegetables. The narrative part of the work itself is very cute.
Holographic projection technology is widely used in this way, games, computers. Holographic projection technology has advantages over other projection technologies. The most direct advantage is that you can watch the virtual things directly through the naked eye, and no longer be restricted by the traditional 3d sound and light. The projected picture is very clear and vivid, the definition is very high and the colour is especially vivid, which makes people feel shocked. Whether it's a birthday party or a wedding celebration, this technology is very widely used to make the theme of the scene more vivid.
So in the future, I also pay attention to holographic projection technology.

[Research] Arduino Electronic Board Game
youtube
While I was doing my research I found that I am deeply attracted to ARDUINO for instance, the pyramid’s secret: ARDUINO Electronic Board Game which is an Egyptian electron chess game. In my opinion, this game can be the ice-breaker for many occasions which is a good way for friends gathering.
The following is the ARDUINO tool which I found very useful when I was doing my project: The board chosen for this project was Arduino Nano, that controls some other modules and circuits (display, MP3 player, buttons, and LEDs). In this game, the most fun part is that the electron handle should not touch the electron wire, what inspired me is the program within whether it is the graphical display or the mapping, it contains 24 LED lights.
Because there is a limit in ARDUINO 2KB RAM as it needs a large amount of storage in order to test its characters and figure, this is not done by the program. It needs to be stored into the external storage of 32KB EEPROM (Microchip 24LC256). This technology is worth studying, and one thing I most admire ARDUINO is that it gives opportunities for players to communicate and it is suitable for children.
Because of my limitation in tools and techniques, I could not reach to such effect. In the future, I will be more positive and willing to produce an interesting game just for children.

[Research]Augmented Reality Sandbox
When I searched for examples of interactive devices, I accidentally discovered an AR sandbox interactive device, which made me very interested, and this device has been commercialized and become a toy for many children.
For this I did some research on this device. The size of the interactive sandbox is approximately 100*75cm (which can be scaled up within a certain degree of magnification), with the projector and sensor placed directly above. How to arrange a complete sand table, firstly, sand is placed in the sand table. When people change the height of the inner sand, the different patterns corresponding to the height are projected in real time on the sand surface. In addition, if the handle is placed on it, the effect of rain can be generated in real time (the rain has the effect of physical simulation, it will automatically flow to the lower part, and has inertia. There are certain requirements for the computing power of the computing device, which will increase the cost)
I personally like this sandbox device. The overall experience feels very good. I think I will search for more literature and tutorials on sandboxes.

[Research] immersive experience
“4 interactive e-learning activity examples to enhance learner participation” When I saw this article, I got a more comprehensive understanding of interactive. First of all, this article introduced in detail the interactive game for learning. What are the uses and the elements that are needed, For example, to deepen the impression of the participants, feedback questions in time to enhance learning, a correct story background, interesting interactions, and so on.
The words “Immersive Experience” and “Interactive” are the words that I hear most in my graduate studies. I am very happy to have access to this knowledge, which is very helpful for my future employment. In virtual reality, there is a difference between semi-immersive and immersive. The immersive experience is better able to help participants fully enter the entire environment. I think I will pay more attention to the literature on immersive experiences in the future. This is a field of knowledge that I am very interested in.

[Research] Terrell Place Video Wall
The project changes space by treating it as a single media canvas. Diffuse LED displays in halls and corridors are activated by passers-by through infrared camera systems to create beautiful scenes.
Three custom content modes-season, Color playback, and Urban Landscape-are programmed in different durations and orders to ensure that visitors never see the same scene twice.
vimeo
Season shows the life cycle of the iconic cherry trees in Washington, D.C., from spring flowers to snow-covered branches
I can see very good examples of LED scenarios in this project, alternating scenarios, which is exactly what I need to learn. This is a good example for me in the development of my project.

[Research]Interactive wall from the subway station
This is an interactive wall at the subway station to show the teamwork information and brand content needed to demonstrate the marathon. The device is also tracked using Kinect. A Kinect is placed on top of each electronic screen. When people pass an electronic screen, the upper Kinect will start to track the pedestrians and play the video to follow the movement speed of the pedestrian. This is a classic interactive device and one of the inspiration for my final project.
I will collect this device on my computer, this is an interesting interactive device I saw for the first time.

[Research] mini-game -Shadowmatic
youtube
Shadowmatic is a puzzle mobile game released by TRIADA Studio LLC in 2015.
The form of the game is similar to a mini-game. It requires the player to rotate the model with a single finger or rotate the projection with two fingers. Its task is to make the projection conform to a specific shape. When the projection is close to the task request, the white spot below the screen will flash, and when all lights are on, the task will be completed. If the player thinks this level is difficult, he can click on the H in the upper left corner to get help, which reduces the difficulty. By completing the level, more game routes will be unlocked, such as the theme of animals and children's toys.
The curtains are fluttering, and the details of the leaves bring a quiet and serene beauty to the game. In addition, these scenes are typically associated with target shadows, such as an outdoor environment corresponding to the animal route, a children's room corresponding to the toy route, a blackboard corresponding to the Numbers route, which is also a small reminder to the player.
This game is simple and easy to understand. The level of difficulty rises and is suitable for beginners who like puzzle games. And the game has different branch routes, which allows the player to feel a mysterious atmosphere.

[Research]Interactive wall from the subway station
Reigns: Her Majesty the Queen is publishing strategic video game development by Nerial and Devolver Digital. This game is an independent sequel to Reigns in 2016. The background of the game is set in a fictional medieval world, which brings a new era of knowledge and enlightenment to the world, but greed and jealousy still conspire against the queen of kindness. Players need to play the role of the Queen and the strategy to solve the problem, and try to make fair or unfair decisions with wisdom, balance the most powerful factions in the kingdom, use their objects and mysterious objects in the list, control The increasingly complex political and personal relationship of the dynasty.
youtube
The biggest feature of the game is its way of interacting. Players need to swipe left or right to make a branch selection to accept or reject suggestions from other characters. Every decision will change the balance between the four pillars of society: church, people, army and economy. Once one of the four indicators becomes too high or too low, the Queen's rule ends. After the queen's death, the player will enter the loop, play the next generation of the queen, continue to play the game. This type of left and right sliding screen interaction is smart because it can be supported on any gaming platform, without the need for high device configurations like shooting games, or the need to sit in front of a computer like a video game for a long time. Mobile phones, computers and even large interactive devices can be used as gaming platforms, and this highly compatible design helps the game's distribution channels.
In addition, the game screen as a whole uses a relatively simple painting style, similar to the low poly style, but does not mean that its design is not refined enough. All characters and events are basically presented as cards. This makes the interface look less complicated.

Development project (Arduino LED Matrix Game of Life)Arduino [research]
This project. I like it very much. Let me remember when I was a child. My brother and I often play gobang on paper.
I met with my tutor and my idea was about the “memory following” project. But the only interactive thing is the “button” which seems a little boring. I’m just looking up Arduino memory tags on youtube. I should change the way I interact. Like touch and so on. Make the interaction more abundant.
Well, I think that’s a good example. I think it’s a good way to interact.
But this project needs A 2.8 “Touch Screen. I don’t have this tool. I think I should borrow one or buy one on amazon.
I think I will do a project about the display screen. I think it’s more interesting.
I like the way this project is presented. It’s interesting. Give me a lot of inspiration. In my future projects, I will try to apply these elements.

Cool Brain Games That’ll Blast Your Logic[Research]
youtube
I feel very good about the picture of these games. And the logical thinking in the game is also very good. Who is lying? This is an interesting visual test to test your logical thinking ;) 04:23 - Check out this cool trivia! Have you heard these things before? Which one is the most amazing for you?
I always wanted to make this kind of game. I find it very interesting. The sense of picture and experience is very good. You can also exercise your brain thinking.
I think games like this type should be very popular because they can exercise brain thinking. And it is suitable for casual games when several friends are gathering together. I think a good game, first of all, the game itself is attractive. And the game is also free to download and play. Otherwise, paid games are not very well developed in the current market. After all, I don’t want to play.

“Research” Crossing the Pit (game )
In the second phase, two of the seven projects were selected. I have two projects, one of which is a game. So I’m looking for some relevant information, some projects.
I’m at Session 4: Gamification Narrative and Control. Mainly play a game.
I’m interested in word games. I mean, for example text selection. Choose one thing and get a different result.
Crossing the Pit is a movie/game created by Puffballs United and the game that served as a prototype for Henry Stickmin series. It was uploaded onto Newgrounds on December 16, 2007.
Description
The game is about an unnamed stick figure (a prototype for Henry Stickmin) trying to cross a pit. He can use leap, teleporter, cannon, rocket, bridge, pole vault, ramp and catapult. Each of those choices results in a fail however.
This kind of game is to choose different objects, get different results.

This game gave me some ideas about the game . It’s not like modern games, like adventure. It’s a relatively easy and short-time game.

Development project (twine) work is in progress
youtube
I developed my word game.
On the basis of the original. I added the image.
I searched the tutorial on how to add images in twine.
https://twinery.org/wiki/twine2:add_an_image_movie_sound_effect_or_music.
I need to put the pictures in a public album. Then put the link in the code.
The public photo album site I use is Flickr.
I will continue to improve this week, adding some sound and music. Make it feel better.
Twine is an open source tool for telling interactive, non-linear stories.
You don’t have to write any code to create a simple story with Twine, but you can use variables, conditional logic, image, CSS, and JavaScript to expand the story in preparation.
There is no better tool for making interactive fiction (games) than Twine. It is probably the simplest form of game making tool and it has a very simple visual editor.
It is a very good choice for me not to write code for me to choose that game
