I still forget.” Hudson admitted with a chuckle, although he was sure Penny remembered how absent minded he could be. “Snake plant, huh? What are those? Maybe I’ll get one of those. I like how lively plants make a place look…unless of course you kill them. Lively…not so much then.”

“You know they have apps for people like you, right?” she teased him. “Seriously, you can’t ignore the notification. Maybe there’s one that can bully you into watering your plants.” Penny always had a rhythm for her plant watering. It was always a chance for her to relax for a bit after work. “How do you function when there isn’t someone else there? I have a hard time believing you do.” Penny typed snake plant into her phone and handed it to her friend. “It is a type of succulent, but they’re pretty and near impossible to kill. They grow slow, and they look good wherever you put them.”

He saw this proposal not just as a way to show his girlfriend how much he loved her, but also as something that she would remember forever. Although we’ve shared many important moments at the hospital… it doesn’t really seem like the most romantic place, you know what I mean?”·

“It does. It always finds a way to bring us to the right person.” Penny thought that her time with James was over when he got married years ago. She gave up all hope until he crashed back into her life.·“It won’t be perfect. It doesn’t need to be. Make it meaningful to the two of you. Neither of you will forget that moment.” Penny just let the biggest question in the world slip from her lips that day, but she never once regretted it. She would never do it over again.·“Alright, you can make that work. Is there somewhere in the hospital that’s special to you to? Somewhere you guys go for breaks or spend time together outside of the OR? Look, you can make it cute--hospital or not.”

The older I get, the more amazing living out in the country sounds. You think you’ll ever move out of the city? Owen asked with a quirk of his eyebrows, focused on Penny’s lips. You say that now, that they’re impossible to kill but I would someone manage it. Though- I’m half tempted to drag you off to find one now to see if I could keep it alive. Owen wrote back, enjoying the company of Penny.

“You mean to tell me you can afford a mansion off your nurses salary?” she shot back at him with raised eyebrows before breaking out into laughter with him. Penny did love her job, but she always wondered by she hospitals insisted on making their salaries so low. “I don’t know. I’ve been in Chicago my whole life, and he left for the military, But we’re from here. It’s my home. We’ve never talked about it,” she said with a shrug. One day, Penny saw her and James moving to a little house on the countryside. Her mind wandered for a minute before snapping back to Owen. “Alright, deal. I’d like to see you keep something alive.”

You can kill a succulent.” Hudson chuckled. While he loved mother Earth and nature in general, he couldn’t take care of a plant to save his life. “Some people do, believe it or not. Them folks sure are missin’ out.” 

“What about a cactus? Have you killed one of those?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. She wouldn’t be surprised if he had. It seemed to be something right up Hudson’s alley. “I could give you some plant lessons. I’ll get you a snake plant. I swear you can’t kill one. You can forget to water them for weeks and it won’t die.” She looked at her friend. He always made her days a little brighter. “They are. Pretty sure there’s a million songs about it.”

“Hey, ever since I met you, I figured that you could use a good influence in your life. I’m just glad that you let me be that for you.” He admitted, genuinely. Dimitri had known exactly what he was signing up for when he had decided to be a part of Penny’s life during her darkest times, so to see her like this on the happiest day of her life meant everything to him. Chuckling softly as he pulled back from the embrace, he shook his head. “You don’t have to throw me a wedding. But if you want, you can help me figure out how I’m going to propose to Arden. I’ve got a ring and everything, you know? I’m just waiting for the right time.” 

“I guess the universe knew I needed you.” Penny always thought people came into your life for a reason, and Dimitri was no exception. Penny was down on her luck when they met. She was working in the bar, and she spent more time high than she did sober. “I’ll have to help plan, at least. I’m proposed to James sitting on the floor of our living room. We had just moved into together, and I hadn’t even planned to do it. It just popped out.” She shrugged. her proposal was perfect to her. "I’m so excited for you! You’ll find the right time. How about something where you guys met?”

Although the conservatory wasn’t somewhere AJ got the opportunity to visit as often as he liked, there was something special about it. Like he could feel the energy of all of the plants buzzing through the air or something, giving him a little boost. It was also a relaxing, peaceful place to let his mind wander — or clear. “It really is. Maybe you should tell James you want him to build you one. I bet he could if he tried. It could be a belated wedding gift,” he mused warmly. “I never got a chance to talk to you at the wedding, but congratulations. James is seriously so happy.”

The peace she felt when she was in the conservatory was nothing like she experienced before. All of her worries seemed to wash away with the fresh air and the smell of the greenhouse. “I don’t think it’d take much convincing. I do want to buy a house--maybe we could find one with a house with a big enough yard. Even just a little one.” Penny shrugged before turning back to Austin. Her cheeks turning red at his mention of James’s happiness. “Thank you! He’s been the biggest part of my life for years.”

That made Briar smile and giggle to herself. “Ah. I’ve done that plenty of times.” It was a good thing the other turned to face her otherwise reading lips was gonna be harder. “It’s so calming. You know I’ve seen the little seeds for that plant over there, ” she pointed to what she was talking about and continued, “at the hardware store. I’m sort of a plant mom. I’m Briar by the way.”

“Especially here. I convince myself I’m thinking in my head, but it’s all coming out of my mouth,” she laughed. The plants kept her calm, and she loved to stare at their beauty. Penny turned to face the plant Briar pointed to.·“Me too! I love bringing home new plants. There’s just something about a new plant that makes me so happy. Pleasure to meet you, Briar. I’m Penny.”

Seeing that she was choking back her tears caused him to lean over to press a kiss on her forehead. “I love you, and I’m so fucking proud of you for all that you’ve accomplished.” He told her, and pulled back to smile at her. No more waterworks. “Well, I’m glad you think so. I really wanted to do this for you, Penny.” 

“Me too. You have no idea how much I needed a person like you in my life.” Dimitri had been a shining light for Penny in some of her darkest times. He had been here for every step of her life for the past ten or so years. He knew everything about her, and he knew everything about how she felt about James (even before she admitted anything to her husband). “I love you, too. If you keep carrying on, I’m never going to stop crying,” she laughed, wiping a tear away with her thumb. “I’m going to have to throw you a wedding now, you know.”

We sometimes miss it with how busy we all are, but it’s times like these I like to sit back and enjoy what’s around me. There’s nothing like surrounding yourself with nature and just…letting go of your worries for the time being, ya know?”

“You look like you couldn’t keep a cactus alive, Hudson,” she teased, giving her friend a nudge. “I know. She always has so much to offer us. All of these plants, it’s like a dream in here. It’s the reason you have to stop and look around every once in a while. You can’t miss things like this.” Her hands brushed across the leaves of one plant before facing her friend again. “Nature just knows what we need, you know?”

The conservatory was one of those places that Owen hadn’t been to, despite having lived his entire life in Chicago. So he jumped at the chance to tag along with Penny on her trip to it. He grinned as he watched her lips move, fingers hovering above his keyboard for a second, making sure she was done talking so he didn’t miss anything else. Alright, what’s stopping you from having this in your back yard? I feel like if you asked James, he would agree to it. He typed out, turning his phone to show her with a grin. I tried to keep plants but, without fail, they all die within a week of me getting them. 

Penny raised an eyebrow after reading his message. “The backyard is not big enough for this. Have you ever seen any home in Chicago? Having a yard is a bit beyond a nurse’s salary around here,” she laughed. “One day, maybe. I’d love to move to the country, have a cottage.” Penny nodded because she understood. For years, she had a black thumb. She couldn’t keep anything alive. “You need a snake plant. They’re impossible to kill. You can forget to water them for weeks and they’ll be okay, and they’re pretty.”

I want our own family.” Penny pulled him closer to her, legs wrapping around his waist to keep pulling him closer. She moaned too, head tilted back and eyes falling shut while his lips pressed to her neck.

A whimper fell past her lips the moment his hips rolled into hers. There wasn’t an inch of her skin that he hadn’t left untouched. Her head fell back again and his name fell past his lips as he thrusted inside her. Hands held tight to his shoulder before pulling him in again. Her hips rose off the bed, feeling every single inch of him. “Don’t stop, James. Fuck, James. Don’t stop.”

Charlie smiled at all the greenery and then at her friend. “Honestly, I’ve always wanted some sort of secret garden situation. Doors with vines and roses grown over them, secret keys to hidden garden oasis’. Kinda seems like a far off dream. But I understand. I’d probably want to move away from the city though. Have more room for that sort of thing, you know? Do you think you and James will end up moving out of the city?” she asked.

Penny’s eyes lit up at the mention of vines and roses. “Can you imagine how beautiful that’d be? Or an arch to walk through that’s covered in the vines and roses. It would be perfect.” Penny’s and James’s home was covered in plants, and Penny was always bringing home a new one at least once every other week.  “I don’t think so. We haven’t talked about that, but we’re both from here. We met here, we got married here. I don’t know. It would feel weird to move away.”

Upon hearing Penny’s words, Lauren could not help but roll her eyes. “That says a lot about the priorities of our board, doesn’t it?” She remarked, shaking her head. It was safe to say that the blonde was not all that fond of the bureaucracy at this hospital, especially with how the budget cuts always seemed to impact the nurses and the techs. “We’re already short-staffed, and these budget cuts are not helping. If anything, it’s just more work for us.” 

Penny nodded. “Absolutely. They don’t care about us. Just the money.” The hospital was constantly overflowing, and all of the nurses were running wild every shift it seemed. “They don’t see that. They don’t understand why we have a limit of how many patients we have. Put them on the floor for the day and they’ll change their minds. I can guarantee that.”
