Day one of Avian August. Which means a month of drawing a new bird every day. This years theme is Hawaiian birds! Though I'm a day late to the game, here's my drawing for August 1st's bird, the iʻiwi, AKA scarlet honeycreeper, AKA Drepanis coccinea. What a looker! That red makes it one of the easier birds to spot on the islands of Hawaii, and the extra curvy bill is made for those flowers with the hard to reach nectar. Though this bird is perched on an ʻōhiʻa lehua, it's main meal source. *Plant featured is the native Hawaiian species, ʻōhiʻa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha)

PSA: we need to save the bali myna
today i got really mad out of nowhere about this and decided that if nobody is going to talk about these birds and their conservation, i will. the bali myna is a small bird found only in bali. they are critically endangered - fewer than 100 adults exist in the wild. (and there’s around 1000 in captivity) the biggest threat towards the bali myna is likely its demand in the captive bird trade - they can fetch extremely high prices on the black market.’
plus, they look like this

so how can you help?
donate to bali safari marine park - currently maintaining a captive gene pool of bali mynas + boosting their population
donate to begawan foundation - breeding and releasing bali mynas, and educating local communities on these birds
educate others on responsible pet purchases + avoid feeding into the pet trade that endangers so many beautiful species.

FTM PASSING ADVICE
- start wearing typically masculine clothing, like suits with wide shoulders
- people will tell you to not wear pinstripes because it'll make your chest and curves more obvious but think of it as a disguise to throw off their scent, like a zebra. it's urban camouflage
- start callin other men "boss" as a sign of respect
- always make sure to stay safe, keep a switchblade on you or a handgun or something
- consider your diet, work some carbs and fat in there for when T starts workin it's magic. im talkin pasta, pizza, lasagna
- tuck your hair up into a fedora if ya can't cut it
- remember to voice train, if you layer on an accent maybe it'll be less obvious, like a Brooklyn one if you're not already from there
- start snappin your rhythmically and intimidatingly when you find the poor bastard that owes the big man up top that several hundred grand who hasn't paid his dues yet. that'll show em who's the dominant man in the situation
- put a playlist of noir jazz music together and have it playing on your phone in your pocket so it follows you at all times, this is crucial to exuding masculine energy
- don't bind for more than 6-7 hours straight
