As an avid adult romantasy reader, the read gave me similar soul gut feelings as reading Rhys’ confession in A Court of Mist and Fury. It gave you the feeling every little detail the author puts in the lines might come back later for a larger purpose, and the hope the enemies-to-lovers trope will have some pay off. This read had me hooked just from the approach that the MMC wasn’t shoved down. Your throat in the first three chapters and the world building was comprehensible.

First and foremost, there is nothing too bold in the story, plot, or world building that we haven’t already seen and does have a predictable theme. As that would normally deter me from giving it a strong score/review, I find in this case that didn’t sway me from the overall feelings this book brings me. Every chapter. Brings something of importance to either the character development or the world building. The supporting characters add humor and found family wariness. The world building was written where you felt like you were watching a well produced Hulu tv show and the MMC wasn’t forced on you to love.

The writing did lack in some consistency - where the MFC is projected as this badass female who fights like Yuji Itadori (Jujutsu Kaisen) but has an issue when she cuts her finger, etc. And in what began like a well written enemies to lovers banter can at times turn into forced and unnecessary conversation.

Overall, I do think this book deserves the hype that BookTok tends to bring forward. I sincerely look forward to the next book and hope more people read this so I can indulge in the fanart created (trust me, it’ll be saucy).
