Assignment 4: Graphic Score

The assignment is a fun exercise to get to know more about graphic scores and what role it plays in the history of sound art. I felt it very complex before I started to draw my own score and try to performance it because there’s no specific theme for the project. I was confusing about how to start the making process. Later on, I found that the process is very random, just like creating an abstract oil painting, even though there’s no clear pattern and melody and the outcome might not be very amusing, there are still rules to follow.
To talk about the creating process of my piece, I, first of all, defined several shapes into different sounds that I am going to make using the human voice. Some sounds are short and powerful, some are long and soft, and some are strange. I think the combination of them would be enjoyable to hear. I drew several straight lines with little marks to state the time scale and provide convenience for later works. After that, I randomly put the shapes I defined earlier into the score and record me pronouncing it.
The finished piece sounds wired to me at first, while after listening to it a few times, I gradually sense the charm of this randomness.

I tried to address the concept of Psychoacoustics as well as The concept of Decay in my piece. I completed the piece with the help of my friend. First of all, I sent him an audio message on WeChat, a chatting app. The message contains not only my voice but also the sound of my space. Then he used his laptop to play it and sent another audio message recording the audio he received to me with his phone. After I received the message, I did the same thing and send the message to him. We repeated the process for about 10 times and the audio became distorted and blurry.
Psychoacoustics, as well as The concept of Decay, are abstract ideas to me when they were introduced during class, while later on, I found that even though I couldn’t hear precisely the words that I said in the first message, It was still able for me to sense and feel the space. The audio blurred the human sound but maintained the sound of the environmental space, for example, the ai5r flows. The activity was quite amusing because the outcome sort of displayed a combination of the sound in his environment or architectural space and mine. Since we are living in two different cities now, the activity in some ways made a connection between our two countries, which made it meaningful. Psychoacoustics, as well as The concept of Decay, are abstract ideas to me when they were introduced during class.

If You Are the One
My art piece, as its title displays, is about a Chinese movie named “If You Are the One” (非诚勿扰). It is comprised of 5 small sections of dialogues and a piece of music from the movie, and a background sound that I recorded.
Through the process of selecting the dialogue sections, there was a utilization of chance operators. I cut about 20 short lengths of dialogues in total and used random number operators in a calculator to make the choice. It was the same process to choose the music. I then rearranged the sequence of the sections to make them logically work so that they briefly summarize the movie.
To further introduce the background sound that I mentioned, it’s not hard to recognize it as the wind. By repeating the action of opening the window and closing it, I got audio with plentiful variation in volume and frequency. I added the audio into my piece because I feel that the action is a great metaphor for the relationship between two main characters in the movie.
In the piece, I tried to convey the concept of Phonography by re-editing several existing sources to create a new piece and adjusting the speed and pitch of the music. I also added effects to enlarge the sense of space of the dialogue audios. In this way, the concept of Acousmatics is combined as well since the actual melody and beats of the music were largely blurred and distorted.

This piece is made from two pre-existed sound sources, “Vincent” and “everything 4 u”. By making the new piece with the concept of vaporwave and plunderphonics, I tried the change the speed of the audio and add some noise to it to make it sound industrial and cheap.
I feel that the practice is very intriguing because making this piece of art isn’t making a completely original work, or to say, if we are making our original work, it doesn’t fit to the concept of plunderphonics, since the concept means to use sources that are already existing and turn it into another style. Vaporwave was very popular around two thousand. I remember that I’ve read a description of doing sampling, “a sampler, in essence, a recording transforming instrument, is simultaneously a documenting device and a creative device, in effect reducing a distinction manifested by copyright.”
Furthermore about my sources, “Vincent” by Don McLean is one of my favorite songs. It’s a ballade Don McLean wrote for the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. There is only one instrument in the song, the guitar, and one single track of human voice, the singer singing the song. The structure and components are very simple, and I think it must be a beautiful art piece on its own when transforming it into a vaporwave style of music. The other song is s song without a human voice and it has a similar beat to “Vincent”. I am not sure about the source I found. I feel like it’s already edited by somebody on the internet, and I re-edit it again. Nonetheless, I like the outcome and the practice helped me to understand the time period and history more.

Midterm project: Life
For the midterm project, I decided to use the chance operator to create a piece of sound art. My instrument is guitar and my system is set with poker cards. Each of the kinds is assigned to a fret on the guitar and the number represents the string I should pull. I randomly picked six cards one by one for a cycle and did it for 7 times.
The outcome is unexpected and glad to hear about. The pitch and sound come with completely no rhythm and melody, but still interesting to explore. I record the process into a video to show the randomness to the audiences. I like playing guitar, even though I started a few months ago and I am not good at it at all. Consequently, I further developed my idea. I decided to add other tracks to the art piece to make it more interesting.
Since guitar is part of my life, I thought about why not record other sounds that describe one of my regular days or regular mornings. I record several sounds including cleaning the room, brushing my teeth, washing my face, preparing some hot water, and so on. Later, I used all kinds of effects and processed actions like cut, copy, and paste to the piece to make it abstract and lose the original sound. By doing this, I feel like the piece becomes easier to visualize to a vivid picture in the audiences’ mind and successfully mixed the concept of the Fluxus movement. I combined the tracks together for the finished piece, and I name it “Life.”
The video is too large to upload.

Assignment 3: Chance operators
My chance operator for this artwork is a set of poker. There are fifty-four cards in a set of poker, so I assigned each of the cards to one color on my watercolor palette. For each time, I randomly pick one card from the set without seeing the number and then find the specific color accordingly to the card. I use the color to draw one stroke or more on the paper. This is basically my creating process. It has a connection with John Cage’s process of creating sound art, using chance operator and random selection.
I ended up not liking the artwork but I was really obsessed with the creating process. I feel like randomly picking colors can make the image more vivid and energetic because the colors would not be the colors I always use in an artwork. I found that sometimes artists have a comfort zone of using a specific range of colors to create, which in some way helps the artists to have their own style, but also in other ways limits their creativity.
Consequently, this process could break boundaries and display more availability. The reason I dislike the artwork is that I feel like when I was doing the strokes, I didn’t intentionally put then in an abstract way, nor a specific way, which resulted in an art piece that’s not professionally abstract, nor specific. As a result, the outcoming is not very satisfying but the process has provided me a whole lot more inspiration to create artworks.

Based on the instruction of creating a sonorous piece with three different sounds that reflect my relationship with technology in the public sphere, I created the piece by first of all recording a sound of my alarm clock, then the sound of me typing on my laptop, and in the end the sound of me using a vinyl player. It might be confusing and unclear to recognize and perceive all the details in the piece, but I think that’s part of the piece. These three objects briefly introduce my relationship to technology. For the alarm clock, I use technology as a tool; For the keyboard, I use it as a necessity to work and study; For the vinyl player, I use it for entertainment and emotional needs.
By knowing more about Musique Concrète and reading the article by Pierre Schaffer, I further understood the principle of Acousmatics and mixed the concepts into my piece of art. For Acousmatic instead of “acoustic music”, it focuses more on the frequencies, duration, and amplitude of the sound art piece, instead of the instrument. It reminds me of what my painting teacher taught in class. He said that when making paintings, we should not focus on the object we are painting, but the shape, the colors, the light and shadow, and the atmosphere.
Consequently, to me, Acousmatics is more like a fine art piece, instead of something relatively similar to an illustration or a design project. For this type of sound art, there’s no exact correlation between the audience and the artist. It’s all about the surprises and uncertainness that audiences perceive. By adding multiple and a diverse range of effects, the original sound of instruments or the tools is partially hidden from the audiences. As a result, there are more chances for them to perceive the richness of the sound itself and awake their unconscious state of mind.

Assignment 1
To be honest, I am sort of a quiet person, who like listening to Chinese ballads and songs with a relatively gentle and soft melody and tone. I prefer simpler music than complex ones. Simpler kinds of music can more easily chill and move me. However, the attached URL is a video of a piece of rock music created by one of my favorite Chinese bands. The music is definitely not a quiet song and has nothing to do with gentleness and softness, while it still moved me to cry. The singer’s voice is so engaging and appealing. The lyrics are wise and thoughtful, and the melody is rich and bright. Furthermore, since the use of different instruments, there is a wide range of dynamics in the music. Not only the music itself, but the teamwork of all members is also remarkable.
The song is about dreams and love. When listening to it and watching the performance at the same time, I feel that I can actually see an energetic young boy who is hesitating about his future but at the same time feeling confident about it. He has a dream so he has to try hard and never give up to grow to the man he wants to be like. Sometimes he feels very depressed, and he believes that there is definitely a group of people who is always in a joyful mood and doesn’t know what sad is. They are the people who know nothing about the real world. Even though they won’t be painful, the boy doesn’t want to be like them.
