The most interesting thing about Gemma’s experiences in the testing floor is that it proves Severance is functionally useless for avoiding the pain of everyday life.

Gemma doesn’t know what happens to her at the dentist. She doesn’t even know she’s going. But her mouth still hurts, so she still hates that room and the outfit associated with it because she recognizes it means pain.

Same with the card writing. She may not know what happens (though I’m sure she might have some idea, based on outfit, of the general scenario) but her hands are cramped and stiff and it’s still unpleasant.

Gemma still suffers from the everyday pains of mundane activities.

I think she’s lying when she tells doctor whatever-his-name-is that she doesn’t feel any specific way about the rooms. Gemma knows which rooms cause more pain than others, and she has no joy to help balance that misery.

The dentist might suck but you can chat with the receptionist and make pleasant small talk with the hygienist and look at the trees out the window. Writing thank you cards is tedious, but you get to enjoy the gifts.

It’s even worse for big moments or horrible pain. Giving birth is agony. But you get to see your child take their first breaths in this world. If your Innie gives birth, they get that moment. All you’re left with is an exhausted body that may need weeks to recover.

the misspoken phrase “trojan’s horse” is so good.

obviously, what ricken means is “trojan horse”. there wasn’t a person named trojan who owned a horse.

it would be an easy enough mistake to overlook. it’s just one letter, and ricken’s phrasing is often just a little pretentious quirky. but he accidentally says something meaningful & more accurate to the situation than what he meant

because “trojan’s horse” is exactly backwards. the trojan horse wasn’t the trojans’, it was the greeks’; we call it the trojan horse because they used it to get into troy. if it were a trojan’s horse, the trojan could use it against the greeks who are trying to sneak in.

when ricken calls the lumonspeak edition of the you you are a “trojan’s horse”, it’s because he would like to imagine that he can use it to sneak his ideas into lumon. but in actuality, it’s lumon that is reframing & recuperating his work to further entrench their ideas.
