Never Let Me Go Movie Reflection
I feel like this movie is different from the other ones we watched.Organ transportation, bioethics, times growing up,and the meaning of true love all got tangled up together in this almost 2-hour long movie. It’s ridiculous. It’s weird. It’s touching. And it’s very beautiful.I haven’t quite seen a slow pace but thought- provoking movie like this.
In the story, there’s a school,Hailsham, breeding a bunch of clones(I apologize for the square narration). From their childhood it starts. When they grow up,they’ll be donating organs until they complete(die). This is a story about three good friends in Hailsham growing up together and going through teenage drama of course. Also finally become adults and their trips after it.
Lucy is a character that’s introduced in the beginning of the story. She,being a teacher, has the guts to tell 4 or 5 graders in Hailsham how their lives are going to pave out.I think she’s brave and is willing to take the punishment. If it was me standing on the podium of Hailsham.I would’ve never have the nerves to look in their crystal eyes and tell them. What Lucy has for them is a bit of maternal love I guess. She wants them to have a chance to fight for themselves or at least ease their pain growing up.She doesn’t know that those students are too gentle for a rebellion (including thoughts) or that life’s helpless sometimes.Since then, although she got fired, a grey shadow was cast on students’ minds. However,no one deals with it.
This movie is almost twisted but persuasive for me,because the characters can somehow find the true meaning of everything at the end.Rutf insists to complete her last donation, finishing her job.And face her mistake before she goes. She changed, not being the jealousy mean girl she still was in teenage.Kathy,on the other hand said “I feel a great sense of pride in what we do”and “What I'm not sure about is if our lives have been so different from the lives of the people we save.We all complete.”Sure, everyone has their own story. In this hectic world, normal people (not them) especially lives in so different colors and shapes. There are book lovers at home, crazy adventurers outdoors, emotionless business man, emotional business man, madame in countryside, feminists in cities.Everyone is their own special story. Kathy knows their lives can’t be what they imagined and maybe are not the best. But it’s hers. It’s meaningful and beautiful to her.And that’s enough.
There’s a word Madame use to describe them that gives me chills “You poor creatures” Clone or not.Nothing is the same inside.Just like today’s market.China produces clone products and are immediately thrown to the trash can by the ones supporting the originals. Why?Because it’s not real, and the only thing valuable on them is the “brand name”.They are nothing without it.Nonetheless, they actually can still be used without fancy fake brand names. How about clone human? They not only can “operate” (live),most importantly, they have “real” thoughts and hearts inside of them, which made them so different from clone products. But I oppose to clone human. Our generation’s value is not ready for it.If a few people make it happen, clone human will become the minor without a doubt. Also, sorry for my conservative mind,we don’t “need” them right now. This world has 7 billion people.Humans are not even close to disappearing.“Carers and donors have achieved so much. That said, we aren't machines.” Clone human are not machine or weapon in wars. They’re actual human beings.
I like how the love story unfolds, although it’s cliche and a bit unreal. The beautiful song “Never Let Me Go” run through it.And Kathy did waited, she did “never let Tommy go”,even at the darkest night in cottage.Kathy and Tommy know they’re meant to be when they’re on the porch outside toy fair. They also know they still are after all the years when Ruth apologize.I hope they could fought for each other during the process though.Kathy could’ve confess, and Tommy could’ve face his true feeling. However, that’s their attitude:passive but soft, against their love life and donation destiny.I think “Never Let Me Go” also meant what she said at the beginning monologue “In the end it wears you down. I suppose that's why I now spend most of my time not looking forwards, but looking back.” ,looking to the cottages and Hailsham, and what happened to them there.She.Tommy.And Ruth.
